timn posted:It's still completely illogical in the first place. Multicrew isn't a meaningful way to boost new players, and the host's combat ranking sure doesn't mean anything either. Yup. Like so many other things, what could have been a good, fun feature is relegated to the bittervet-endgame where you don't have to care about money. It's strange how many QOL improvements or actual gameplay mechanics end up hobbled because certain '84ers don't think the game punishes new players enough.

The weirder thing is it's not even necessarily an attempt to make the game punishing, it's just incongruent with how player progress actually happens. If the host's combat rating actually measured how much money you can earn with them, and if multicrew was actually any more lucrative than just hanging out with cops in hi-res, this would make sense. In reality they're just nerfing multicrew to below the existing alternatives.

As I understand it, this is one time where it isn't Sandro's fault. Sandro's actually responsible for the original design where everyone got full and equal payouts and was also responsible for buffing wing bounty/bond payouts so everyone gets full share instead of a split. From what has come out of the debacle so far it seems that it was actually an edict directly from Braben to reduce the payouts to insulting levels so that people couldn't skip through the precious new player experience (that you can already skip by following cops around for half an hour). He unfortunately still doesn't seem to actually understand how people other than him play Elite and a lot of the seemingly strange decisions make more sense when you consider that Braben intends Elite to be played by just drifting from station to station following the missions and only really owning one ship and upgrading it as you go.

Flipswitch posted:How's the Federal Assault Ship? Loooks rad Essentially a more swole Vulture. Bigger, more space, some actual secondary weapon slots - still very nimble, if not quite as agile as the Vult is. Very much a dedicated combat ship, it doesn't really have internal space for any role that doesn't involve pushing somebody's poo poo in, but it's pretty fun to fly. Note that the hardpoints are kind of oddly positioned - you have one C3 gun under the hull in a classic 'chin' mount, another on the middle of your back, and the C2 mounts are at the back corners of your underside. The arc where your C3 guns can both hit your target at once is a fairly narrow horizontal band - this sort of supports an 'asymmetric' loadout where you have one fire group for the top cannon and one for the three bottom guns, or something like a C3 laser + C3 chin-mounted (multi)cannon + 2 missile launchers for deserving targets. Hilarity option, C3 laser + C3 cannon + 2 torpedo pylons for that extra bit of no, gently caress YOU.

So do Incendiary MCs do less hull damage than regular MCs because of their thermal damage? And what if the target is under the effects of a corrosive shell?

Incendiaries also add some damage besides converting a portion of it to thermal, I think you end up more or less slightly ahead or at about even, all told, dependning on the specific resistances of your target. Corrosive shells AFAIK drop *all* resistances on your target so it really doesn't give much of a gently caress whether you're shooting with kinetics, thermals or both. I'm flying a FAS right now and have been for a little while. The mass is actually hilarious as you can pump it up with hull reinforcement. It makes it an inertial beast, but if you can point that inertia at someone else, they will just explode.

Mercurius posted:Incendiary actually lowers the total damage output to 95% of what it was previously and converts the whole lot to thermal. I think you're probably thinking of the kinetic damage mod for burst lasers where it adds 50% extra damage as kinetic on top of the base thermal but it also introduces so much aiming jitter to it that you can't hit anything with it unless you're at point blank range. Oh hell, really? That's how incendiaries used to work, I didn't expect them to nerf them that badly. Flipswitch posted:Thanks for all your replies buddy, been super helpful. Happy to help! I'm the kind of a helpful sperg who enjoys talking somebody's ear off about poo poo like this, so, yeah. I just sold my mostly A-fit FAS for about 63M, so that's pretty much the top range of what you're looking for a fit. A decent D/C-grade fit is probably around half that, the FAS has high enough class for its modules that A-grading them gets pretty costly. The A-grade thruster array alone was like 16M. Note that despite the beefy mass on the FAS, the guidance thrusters are equally nuts; it's actually very nimble, even when fully tank-fit. I fit mine with heavyduty milspec armor, heavyduty HRPs and such, and it was still extremely mobile for a ship its relative size, and yes, if you can boost into somebody's face that hull shape makes it into basically a giant axe head. Probably not the most effective way to fit it but definitely amusing. As for Fed rep, I'm not quite sure - I think Sothis and Ceos are fairly popular for that, they're in the assend of nowhere but both systems have at least one Federal faction and they like to give courier missions for one another. I was toying around with the thought of fitting a Dolphin or the like and heading over there to see if I couldn't grind rep with passenger missions.

I bought this game ages ago because someone described it as Euro Truck in space but I was initially put off by not really knowing wtf to do. So I picked it up again recently and have managed a few basic deliveries with the starting ship. Couple of questions, occasionally when I try and plot a route I get a failure message? Also whats the deal with flight assist, after a bit of googling apparently when it's off it doesn't automatically balance you out so you just keep spinning around but is it even possible to fly without it using a controller or is it not worth attempting without an actual flight stick?

I use FA off all the time with mouse and keyboard, it's not so bad. Don't leave it on constantly unless you want the challenge but using it and knowing when to use it will make you a better pilot. Try moving around slowly inside a station with FA off, or around the outside of one of the smaller outposts or an asteroid field. What's the failure message?

I tried turning it off outside of an outpost and most of the time it just felt like I was just floating around it with very little control, although that could be because there weren't any other reference points for me to use. I'll give it a mess around in an asteroid field. The route calculating thing just said it failed to calculate a route, don't think there was an error message? I had a quick play last night and it didn't have a problem calculating a route over multiple jumps so I dunno. I did convince a friend to play and it's pretty cool you can setup a private instance, are there cool things you can do in this game with other people?

1000ly is the max your navcomp will plot regardless, but if you're in a low jumprange ship and stars are sparse where you are it might just not be possible to route where you're going without a big detour.
|
# ? Apr 21, 2017 09:59 |
|
When you're starting out your jumprange is going to be pretty low, and you should take the opportunity to learn how to do basic navigation between stations, land and take off correctly, manage fuel, etc. The game will really open up when you save up enough to buy a Cobra MKIII (about 300,000 credits) which will give you a jumprange of about 14ly or so by default.

Did some research on this and it seems the recent patch nerfed incendiary MCs hard. Now it converts the damage from 100% kinetic to 95% thermal. Note a 5% damage decrease compared to unmodded. In the latest version unless you intend to use the MCs to strip shields it's better to run them unmodded (or use autoloader).

Note a 5% damage decrease compared to unmodded. Incendiary was brought into line with other mc mods because it was a clear choice over all the other specials. A mod that converts a multi (with it's low cap draw) into a weapon that replaces lasers for stripping shields is entirely too much a best of both worlds. The nerf is a rate of fire nerf, not a damage nerf. The previous damage correction to the weapon fixed a bug where the weapon was adding bonus thermic damage on top of full kinetic damage. The issue right now that has forced MCs out of the meta is the relative strength of plasma, the fact that everyone has 50% resists across the board, and the agility/lack of tot due to the existence of God rolled dd5s.
