I really enjoy this addition, having everyone grab a corpse before they rappel out really adds a certain je ne sais quoi to the hit-and-run of LW2's Xcom.

Why the flying gently caress did the Advent Tower mission not give me all the corpses? I went through so much loving effort making sure I got as few explosive kills as possible because it wasn't an evac mission and I assumed the corpses would be collectable.

Got a neutralize VIP mission with very little time to infilitrate and moderate-heavy baseline troop strength. Thought I'd be smart and sent in a single sharpshooter so she can take out the target from long range and get the hell out.

Ouch, five soldiers and no supplies after that mission. Starting again with Alien Hunters totally deactivated because I really can't handle them so early at the moment and I can't be bothered with re-doing the scripted mission again. I'll leave it for when I git gud.

Also, the fact that you can't re-build the bolt caster and frost grenades etc if you lose them is pretty harsh. 'Looks like you can't handle the rulers, I'll just take away the best items you have against them'.

You don't get bodies on missions where you have to leave immediately after completion. Essentially the only missions you get bodies from are supply raids and ambushes.

Or enable the missions in the mod list and just never go. That way you at least get the weapons.

The issue is that Network Tower missions is set up like those missions: they have the "Neutralize All Enemies" objective once you shut down the tower, you just don't get any corpses from them because ???????

You leave the bodies behind skewered on the tower so when advent comes to investigate why the facility went dark they don't stick around.

Well, I just got dealt a "gently caress you" of the bug-variety or something.

Mission to hack a workstation, I didn't bring a specialist because none were available, but I thought that doesn't matter because you can always hack it by moving up adjacent to it anyways in my experience. Well turns out something about the placement of this one (though it was just a laptop on a counter) made it impossible to activate for some reason, so that's a mission failed for no real reason at all, and everything had gone perfectly as well.

Guess, that's what I get for playing on ironman...

e: Upon quitting Steam started downloading 380MB worth of workshop content for X-COM 2, guess that's 1.1 of Long War.

Something about LW's terrain destruction can get people stuck in furniture or walls, I couldn't fix it except by reloading.

Yes, but it is not explicitly those missions. The idea is you're killing everyone and then high-tailing it out of there. You don't have time to collect bodies.

There's literally a loading screen tip that explains this.

I'm so glad I don't play LW with ironman on.

That's the third time its generated a map for me that is literally to big for me to double move across, deal with a single pod (in one turn), hack the door for a jailbreak and get out.

E: Of course, I can just get out, but not do the jailbreak. In which case i'm running from entry to extraction without killing anything, woo, fun. What the hell game, generate a reasonable loving map.

But the issue is that the Network Tower mission doesn't work like that

Like every other mission where you don't get bodies makes it obvious because you have to evac: you can't stay and clear the area. The tooltip on why you don't get corpses even notes that it's because you had to evac from the area.

The Network Tower mission does not work like those missions. You have to hack the objective, and then clear the area like if it was a vanilla guerilla op that didn't have a hard timer. For someone who had thought they knew how LW2 worked at that point, it's a shock to find out you get nothing from it beyond plot/one-time corpses despite it not being a mission you evac from.

Yeah, this. It's extremely jarring and not what the game leads you to expect at all. There's no timer, no evac, no sense of urgency whatsoever other than the one reinforcement pod every 3-4 turns until you zap the place.

I'm having a great time with LW now, but I'm still running into really annoying enemy line of sight involving buildings. An advent trooper on ground level should not have any concealment breaking line of sight 5 stories up with cover, it's infuriating.

I don't know what to tell you guys. The in-game tip made it obvious you only get corpses from supply raid and ambush missions. I went in to the network tower with no expectation of corpses.

And if you didn't notice the tip, then only missions that reward "alien materiels" give corpses. The network tower doesn't list that as a reward.

So I just beat the vanilla game after getting it through Humble Monthly. Did they ever fix the final mission being a black screen instead of being a stats screen? Googling shows that it's been an issue. Can I keep reloading my last turn so I can get the appropriate ending? Firaxis :argh:

Yeah, which is why I went in thinking it would be get in and get out like literally every other mission where you don't recover corpses.

When it transitioned to "nah actually kill everything still there" after hacking the tower, I thought that I had just managed to do it fast enough to block off any more reinforcements and let me secure the area for looting purposes, not that it was going to be a bizarrely designed mission where you kill everything and don't get anything because gameplay mechanic consistency is for losers, I guess.

It is consistent, though. The tip says something like "you only get corpses on missions where you don't evac or leave immediately after the battle." It's pretty consistent with that that you can't hang around a highly-secure Advent facility, even if you just killed everyone there. Advent is surely sending in an army to lock that place down.

I will agree, though, that the game needs to do a BETTER job of explaining when you will and won't get corpses.

Then why does it have a kill everything objective then? That's what I meant by gameplay mechanic consistency, every other mission that you can't recover corpses from has the gameplay innately supporting it:

Retaliations and standard guerilla ops have never ending reinforcements that just get worse and worse as times goes on, you can't actually survive past a point.

Council missions are basically unchanged from vanilla re: a hard time limit before Firebrand leaves.

Their up and coming Smash n Grab missions is basically Guerilla War's Supply Raid: go into an ADVENT facility and grab as much stuff as you can and leave before ADVENT arrives with the hammer

Meanwhile all the missions you do recover corpses from, are ones in which you're either attacking ADVENT directly (regional HQ, facilities, ambushes, supply raids), or you're beating off ADVENT attacks instead of running away (Datataps, Invasions of Liberated Regions, etc), hence why you have the objectives of securing the area after completing the objective.

Either Network tower should be an evac after objective completion mission, or it should give you corpses, as is its mission design is just weirdly inconsistent.

If you haven't already, you can look in the .inis to see exactly how reinforcements work. Basically, there's a bucket. It's full at 1. Every round you take 0.X and drop that in, when it's full, you get reinforcements next turn. The number is based on the ADVENT strength in the region minus a difficulty modifier for Rookie and Veteran difficulties, and then modified by up to 30% one way or another. You shouldn't be getting 6 in 7 turns.
