Yes, actually. In Windows 7 I found everything I searched for that was actually there just by typing any string of characters the file or folder contained. Windows 10 can't even find "c:\folder\anotepadfile.txt" even if you start your search in "c:\folder\" and your search string is "anotepadfile".

It's so useless I'm actually wondering if the way you're supposed to search stuff has drastically changed or something and I'm doing it wrong. Serious question, what can Windows 10 Search find, exactly? And how do you go about using it? Is there some special super secret syntax you're supposed to use?

That's what's so weird in my case: it doesn't "find nothing." When I search for "NATION" I see plenty of results, but not that file. It can see some files but not others. It would be easier if it found nothing; I would know not to trust it. Instead, it found a bunch of files and I figured that it didn't exist.

Why would the WiFi not also block it? Is it not your company's WiFi? Have you considered a VPN? ExpressVPN has worked pretty well for me. You do have to pay for it, though. If you happen to go to China or something it's a nice way back to free American internet. :911:

There's a particular file you delete so it rebuilds the index and then search should work fine. I had this problem on my latest build but since it's clear you need as much help searching as your computer does I'll let you find the instructions on your own.

It's not even just a file, there's a way to reverify/rebuild the search index within the system.

The reality is that most AV programs aren't very useful against the most dangerous kinds of malware and against everything else common sense and a patched browser + adblocker are generally sufficient. I haven't had an infection on one of my computers in well over a decade, and I'm not unusually cautious.

You might as well still run antivirus/malware programs, because the cost to do so is very low, but you don't need to fuss over what you use very much.

It can't be overstated how important adblocking is, as you say. It's pretty much the most critical defence. uBlock origin is probably more valuable than most av.

I don't really get why people are surprised by this. AV products have always done very intrusive things to an OS in the name of security and are very loud about it so you feel you're getting your money's worth. Meanwhile Microsoft, who write the OS, somehow shock people by knowing how to protect it with a product that actually conforms to Windows best practises and is somehow too quiet when nothing bad has happened.

Uh, it's slow garbage with a terrible UI that hogs RAM in a way that's actively a problem for other processes, and webkit has never been good? Sure it's better than still using IE8 or something but that's not saying much.

On Windows 10, how do I dismiss the password entry box to just view the image behind it?

I use the thing that puts up selected-by-Microsoft images on the logon screen, and there's a way to get that screen to just show the image along with some overlays that give information about where the image is from and whatnot...I sometimes find myself at this screen...but I can't seem to figure out how to purposefully get there.

Once the password prompt comes up, you can't dismiss it. You have to wake your machine by jiggling the mouse instead of clicking to be able to stare at the image. :v:

Every porn site nowadays seems to have ditched Flash already! The porn industry has always been ahead of the curve after all. The #1 reason I even bother having it on Safari is because of HBO Now.

Oh, well that makes sense then. My company is quite large, and recently force-uninstalled it because it had constant security issues. Thankfully none of our enterprise application used it.

Ugh, one of those godawful linux person applications where a GUI is somehow low on the list of features to implement. First attempt at getting it to work with a VOD gets me audio but no video and no seeking. Thanks for the suggestion but I'm pretty sure I'm going to throw this in the garbage.

Twitch is migrating to full HTML5 very soon, the chat was changed over quite a while ago and they're slowly rolling out the video player to users as they test it with larger groups.

You can try mpv + youtube-dl + Open With until then, if you can't get livestreamer to work.

This doesn't even have an option to watch VODs, which is most of what I watch on Twitch due to time zone differences. Apparently this is due to the fact that livestreamer doesn't handle them very well, as I discovered. Thanks again, though.

Executive to the programmer: "We have to constantly demonstrate our value to the user. Have the program daily prompt the user with something. Update and suddenly take up half the RAM/CPU twice per week so that they know it's important. Make it literally impossible to uninstall. Then they'll know how vital we are."
