i stopped watching akiba's trip at the episode where vampires almost tricked the heroines into becoming porn stars

that in itself wouldn't bother me but the fanservice and the general feel of the show comes off pretty uncomfortable and not fun, especially compared to the game that at worst had a few weird bits but mostly balanced them out with a lot of lighthearted goofy antics and a genuinely lovable cast, and that episode in general just didn't do much to convince me

I...might be about to drop LWA. I really want to like it more than I do, and there's a version of this show that's way more focused than the one we're getting that's all kind of my poo poo, but we're nine episodes in and we've had almost nothing happen besides nonstop, self-contained, purely episodic antics with characters whose development ranges from static to glacial. Akko, Lotte, Sucy and Ursula aren't EXACTLY the same characters they were two hours of screentime ago, but they're pretty close. It's funny and all, but it's just not funny enough to keep this going for as long as it's trying to. At least not for me.

And, like, it's not even that bad, it's just that the first few episodes left me hoping I'd wind up having a much stronger case for it than I do for Gabriel Dropout instead of one that's roughly on par.
I'm pretty down on LWA compared to most but I do feel like it's not necessarily to the show's detriment if 9 eps in the team is not changing too much given that it's a 2 cour show. None of that would matter if they were still charming or entertaining to watch, and my main issue is that I just don't actually like them as people so it's hard to take some of the antics in stride and just kind of enjoy the ride. For all its myriad of faults, even Kill la Kill I think did a better job of doing just that with Ryuko and Mako, at least at the start.

Akiba's Trip had what looked like some nice fisticuffs animation but the rest of it other than that surprisingly educational ham radio episode didn't hold my interest.

LWA I feel is at it's best when it's clearly trying to do something with its characters; but its hard for me to be too invested when the world itself has a certain amount of inherent silliness to it and its hard to be engaged to Akko's growth when the magic system she so badly wants to excel at has no rhyme or reason to it.

Something Harry Potter does well thinking about it was establishing what spells were difficult and maybe not exactly explaining why but it certainly conveyed that difficulty well; this gave good contrast for when there were things he was naturally good at. So Harry's struggles with learning his Patronis really sold it, but also Sirius's efforts in teaching him.

Ursula is supposedly tutoring Akko but we don't really see her doing this nearly as well.

a lot of what you're looking for in the anime was invented by the translators of the game, so

It's almost like Ursula is a bad teacher, and we might see her grow over the show too...

I just wish it would happen faster.

The third season of Yowamushi Pedal started this week!

I'm not even joking, if you told me the first 8 episodes of this season were just me accidentally watching the end of the movie over and over again, and this week's episodes was the season premiere, I'd believe you.

After actually watching LWA 9 I think the problem is less that the characters aren't really developing and more that the stories these stand alone episodes are telling are just not very good or entertaining. Everything with that zombie dude felt half-assed.

Yeah the cold open and the last 5 minutes were good, I was kind of bored by everything in between. The gag where they pretended he was their senile old grandpa was fun though

Yeah, like I said - my problem with LWA isn't just that it's leaning too hard into the comedy. The problem is that it just isn't funny enough to ask the comedy to carry it for the bulk of 9 episodes.

Supposedly (NSFW ads?) there's an interview with the LWA director where he's complaining about there being so many things they want to do that 2 cours won't be nearly enough.

Gotta love Kobayashi's Maid Dragon. It's charming, well animated, and it's one of the few anime where I remember character names.

KyoAni stepped up their game with this anime, and that's from someone who used to be big on em.

Animation quality aside, Euphonium is really not all that good or interesting. I dropped it like 5 or 6 episodes in and don't really feel any pressing need to go back to it.

I kind of fell in love with Euphonium's lighting. All those long, deep shadows. MaidDragon doesn't really do that. Also the big forehead girl kinda weirds me out.

Eupho S1 and S2 were the best shows of their respective years IMO. It had extremely relatable characters and drama. I wasn't super satisfied with the ending in S2 but it's still overall the best thing KyoAni has made in a long time, including the very solid/good Maid Dragon.

From what I remember, the direction seemed more or less average for KyoAni, which, granted, makes it better than most shows, but not something I'd say makes it worth watching in it's own right.

It was definitely quite superlative. It was rife with subtle and not-so-subtle pacing and framing direction that complemented the story extremely well. The most specific examples off the top of my head is how it would go out of its way to make it so that Shuuichi would constantly have to interrupt whatever action or conversation was taking place.

Eupho literally wouldn't work without top-class directing, IMO. I wasn't super satisfied with how S2 ended, but that had very little to do with anything anyone at KyoAni could realistically do about it as an adaptation. Everything else about the show was immaculate.

Oh I see! This must be the Bad Opinion Zone!
Euphonium was Art, but everyone involved with Maidragon seems to be tangibly having a lot of fun doing it so that's pretty cool.

I hear one of the Kyoani animators commented that they've already finished work on the series, which is sorta something in an industry that is habitually crunching up to the last nanosecond.
