So recently I got a hold of Jeremy Colwart's "LifeFinder" DVD (so far it's pretty bad compared to Joey L's). At any rate he goes through his work flow a bit, using a band promo shoot as an example. In his explanations he casually mentions that he "used 24 different set-ups, which is pretty par the course". That got me wondering how most people approach band shoots, so I figured I'd open up the question. Typically when I shoot a promo shoot I aim to shoot the band the hour before golden hour, the hour of golden hour, and maybe a few minutes after the sun sets if we've got a good location in the dark. All in all I try to aim for 2-4 locations that have a variety of slightly different backdrops and areas. I've never counted my set-ups but I imagine I probably only do about 10 different "set-ups" though most of them are pretty similar unlike Colwart who does 24 ridiculously different looks (all the shots he showed were in the studio if that makes a difference). He didn't get into what he charged for this, but I can only speculate it goes into the thousands of dollars. So on that note I'm curious as to how you guys approach a promo shoot, do you offer different packages, or just give everyone a "one size fits all"?

I've been varying it from 10-30 depending on how many I have, but I'm worried that 30 is a bit too many, especially if they're repetitive.

I'd rather use the slightly off focus/slightly motion blurred photo of a singer jumping into a pit, or off of the drum riser than the umpteenth shot of him standing in front of the microphone that every photographer can get. My usual output is about 10-50 (with a good show).

If it's a "This might be your only shot" I'll shoot too many and end up posting ~150 (Like I did for The Dillinger Escape Plan and Darkest hour) though I shot close to 500 for Darkest Hour (they had good lights) and ~1,200 for Dillinger (They were in pitch black with random strobes firing most of the show). Regular locals run the gambit from 3 (If I don't give a poo poo) to 100 (if they're my friends).

Don't think I've posted in this thread yet... I haven't ever shot much live stuff except for dubstep or electro shows, but recently I was asked by a local arts and culture mag I freelance for to shoot a 12 week series on different shows going on in Calgary. I'll post a few, and the whole set. I'd love to hear some feedback! I, Butthole, you know who I am First real time shooting bands and here's what I got. 550D with Sigma 10-20mm and 55-250mm mostly. High school, organized competition with some of my mates in. The last shots are of Recommended By Your Mom (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Recommended-By-Your-Mom/278441107564), a pop-punk band touring with the setup. For some reason the sound and lighting was best then and consequently I managed to get some of my best shots IMO. I took my 17-40 f/4 to a gig this week to see; it was pretty fun, but I probably get more use out of a 50 mm, f/4 is a bit too slow. I've almost entirely been using primes for the past year or so, so it's fun being able to zoom: 17-40: Clare Maguire by atmz, on Flickr Clare Maguire by atmz, on Flickr Alpines by atmz, on Flickr 50mm : Clare Maguire by atmz, on Flickr Auditore, those are really good for your first try, especially with a fairly slow lens. I prefer 6218 to 6253 though, personally - it shows less of the band but her expression is better, although the hotspot next to her might be an issue.

Abnegatus posted:Thanks for the kind words Try PR Companies. It takes a long to find them, but if you can find the person who does the band's PR often times they'll get you in. Also, stop going after web-zines and go after actual print zines, there's at least 5 in Omaha, there's gotta be hundreds in California. I've also had success directly contacting the band. I asked Greg Puciato (of The Dillinger Escape Plan) on his facebook fan page that he actively uses and he got me in on the band's guest list. (Side note: DEP is incredibly nice, and they love photographers (and they make for incredible pictures). They let me shoot the whole show from the pit, and even said people could use flash).

Try to time your shots so you don't end up with microphone-eating photos. At one point or another, they'll get some separation between face and microphone. Either that or move to the the side to get a little more of a profile shot.

At first I was using one light, but it made by background too grey in comparison to a properly exposed subject. When I added two lights pointed at the seamless on each side, plus a third light on the subject, it kind of fixed it, but I was getting to much spill. Next time I gotta grid that poo poo I think.

Question about concert photography: It seems like a lot of concert photographers use B&W film because of the detail you can get in low-light situations - and I know color film can give some pretty ugly noise in low-light. Are there any tips or film recommendations for color film concert photography? I'm talking about small low-light venues, not huge amphitheaters or anything like that. If I need to take this to the film thread instead, I can. Just thought I'd try here first.

QPZIL posted:Question about concert photography: I wouldn't bother with colour film if I were you. Plain old black and white 400 film is easy to push to 1600 or 3200 at home but colour film either requires buying expensive high speed film, paying for push processing at a lab or underexposing and hoping everything turns out okay which might work in a daylight situation but I'd be very doubtful about it in a club or bar concert situation where it's all about the shadow detail. To be honest, I don't get very much of a reaction to colour film photography as opposed to black and white. People go bonkers over black and white.
