Probably some nice timing since ClekClekBoom has only just put out a comp called Paris Club Music which you might like. Available in a double pack or a CD and should be available from your favourite cool record store, online or in the real world.

Yeah I kinda wish Rinse would take a bit more of a risk and go for more of the DJs rather than producers thing, if that makes any sense? On saying that they've been pretty good recently I guess, with like the Ben UFO, Mark Radford and Dugs thing. But I'd love it if they did a Funk Butcher one, or an SK Vibemaker one or whoever. I always figured going for the likes of Kode9 or T. Williams was playing a bit on the safe side as they're all well known names.

Really though all I ever wanted from the Rinse CDs was a Heatwave mix. Now though I'd settle for an IG Culture one. I'd like a new Marcus Nasty one too actually.

And speaking of Swamp81, new Zed Bias 12" out this week. I'm guessing it'll end up being a cut off the new album he's got coming for them.

Are people interested in doing like a monthly compilation exchange thing in the thread? Like, each month, pick out a compilation that you think is really great and post it so other interested people can check out tracks/genres they maybe haven't heard before. I got thinking about this when I realized while I love UKG, my track collection is pitifully small. Ideally, it wouldn't be limited to just UK Bass, but any sort of dance music.

This sounds like a great idea. At the very least it'll give me a much needed excuse to actually dig through my CD racks and try remember exactly what the gently caress I've picked up over the years.

Krystal Klear is groovy, though is it wrong the first thing I thought when I heard that Boogie show was, Oh god, this means we're months away from a constant barrage of shite tracks sampling the same 5-6 Boogie tunes which you've already heard being sampled. Please folks, unless you're over-40 or on the likes of Eglo records, you've probably never liked Boogie up until a couple of weeks ago. Half of them tracks have probably been plundered long ago anyway in some House or Broken Beat track.

Maybe I'm just super cynical with this kinda Italo-House revival thing that's kinda been going on, where you just think half the guys trying to draw from that well have only heard the same comp or two with the tracks that really stand up to the 21st century, rather than the whole thing which includes all those lovely German numbers.

This isn't quite a compilation but Truants just released a mix where "the crew was allowed to pick old and new tracks within any junction of music, as long as it made them walk an immediate straight line from the bar to the dancefloor whenever they hear it out in the club."

It's got a little bit of everything and from what I've heard so far it's pretty well mixed for the variety of stuff going on so take a look at what other people think are a bunch of bangers!

Got tapped to play two shows at U Hall, and each is very different from the other: Amon Tobin in two weeks, then Eats Everything on June 1st. The Eats show is easy, just bassy house, but I'm thinking spacey dnb / footwork-ish stuff for the Amon show.

Ok, here's my contribution for April's compilation:

This Is UK Funky House - Presented By Crazy Cousinz Vol. 1

Released during the height of UK Funky's golden age (mid-2009), this compilation (mixed by Crazy Cousinz) contains basically every classic UK Funky track in my opinion. This was when UK Funky was sexy and vocal-laden. I'm sure 28GBB has his own anecdotes about it, but this was probably the first UK Bass subgenre that I fell in love with. The only problem is that finding unmixed tracks is a gigantic pain in the rear end since I think most of these were white labels.

Track listing available here: http://www.discogs.com/Crazy-Cousinz-This-Is-UK-Funky-House-Vol-1-Presented-By-Crazy-Cousinz/release/1943425

Here are some choice selections off it:

Kyla - Do You Mind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YHC69wa9JA (Maybe THE UK Funky track)
KIG - Head Shoulderz Kneez and Toez: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyJpWQi0sBM (migraine skank time)
Crazy Cousinz - Bongo Jam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juSvAX2EQaY
Geeneus - As I (Feat. Katy B): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2o5jcKploFA
Donaeo - African Warrior: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZ5s11N-Sb0
Attacca Pesante - Make It Funky For Me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXfAkBPlmvY

Yes! I've been waiting for this since you talked about it the other day.

I actually have a lot of that early UK Funky stuff on white label, with the occasional real printed label mixed in. I still maintain if the scene had actually kept putting out real records - hell even shitey wee digital copies - it might've made a proper dent. Sadly a Youtube video of a bunch of youts dancing to whatever skanking tune was in the spotlight for 15 minutes doesn't make for longevity, surprisingly enough. A real shame when you consider tracks like Do You Mind, Donaeo's whole output of the time and the early Gee/Zinc/Katy B stuff really had something about them.

Anyway it took me a while to decide what to pick, and I was tempted to fulfill some wishes and maybe see what UKG CDs I had kicking about, but in the end I kept it slightly more up to date and decided on this one.

Now everyone in the world knows about the likes of Fabric, Berghain or Amnesia, but there's a million and one other party places scattered through out the world. One such place is the beachfront restaurant and club of Boca Barranca, located on the Adriatic coast of Italy. I'd say it's probably relatively unknown music-wise unless you're into what gets played there, which tends to be lots of funky, funky music. In the early to mid-00s this meant not only the classics, but also plenty of Broken Beat and Nu-Jazz.

To showcase the music coming out of the place Arision Records compiled this collection in 2007, and man, what a collection it is. Sure Arision didn't shy away from promoting some of it's own acts such as Marco Di Marco, Big Bang and Dimension 6, but hey, what not? It'd have been a poo poo record label if it didn't try and flog itself and it's artists.

And that's not to say those tracks seem out of place on Boca Allstars Vol 1. With some strategic remixes they slot right into what's an absolutely bumper of a tracklist. One that'll keep your arse on the dancefloor all night long, though you'll at least be able to vary-up your booty shakin' as it's very much a disc of two halfs.

The first keep things slightly more relaxed, a bit more sedate, to allow you to shake off those cobwebs and warm up those muscles with most of the tunes falling either on the more Jazzy end of the spectrum - like the Nicola Conte or LTJ X-Perience's rerubs of a couple of Di Marco's tunes - or the more laid back, soulful and funky Broken tracks such as Colonel Red's excellent Blue Eye Blak and Isoul8's Primavera.

But once you reach the second half of the album the foot goes down on the pedal and it ain't letting off until the end. Somewhat appropriately you can mark the changing point at the 4Hero remix of the aptly named Sweet y Sour by Big Bang.

Simply mindblowing tracks such as Mark De Clive-Lowe's tremendous, timeless classic Twilight (a tune I remember buying via Japanese import on Especial for something ridiculous then like £11 or £12), the Spiritual South mix of the pioneering Brazilian band Azymuth's track Roda Piao or Afronaught's massive heavyweight bassline wobbler Golpe Tuyo Calinda just rocket you into the sun with a cast iron guarantee to keep your feet moving and your body sweating.

Things only get wound down at the very end of the disc with a total head nodder and finger clicker of a track in the shape of the Mark De Clive-Lowe produced U Better Run by Rasiyah.

Honestly this compilation is a bit of a lost classic I guess. I remember picking it up just after it came out and being simply mesmerised by it then, and over half a decade later it still doesn't disappoint. Really it's almost a headstone to that whole Broken Beat scene as around the time this came out Goya Music who was the prime distributor and pusher of the music and the scene folded, ending more than a few labels who were left without their cash or the worldwide connections that Goya had developed. A sad end to what was a really superb scene, that was filled with a ton of music that I absolutely adored.

I'll put forward my favourite compilation of all time and the CD that made sure that a 12-year old me ended up listening to grime almost exclusively throughout my life: Bass Breaks & Beats 2003. CD1 is Proto-grime and Dark Garage mixed by none other than DJ EZ, and really captures all the raw creativity that was coming out of London at the time. It's weird to think that when this CD was released everything on it was considered "Garage" since the terms Grime, Eski and Sublow were still getting thrown around but not sticking.

For me the best way to listen to this is in its entire mixed form, which thankfully someone has uploaded to Youtube. Listen here.

Highlights:

DJ Narrows - Saved Soul https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVc1546lk3w
"If it wasn't for the music, I don't know what we'd do... You know the music stepped in and saved my life"

Ends Production - Are you Really From The Ends? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOvcpY8ndnY
Back in the day of Channel U

Sticky - Golly Gosh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8sM3Zg8h-8
I think this goes down as the tune that really blew my mind when I was younger. I was lucky enough to own a decent hi-fi and I remember the cones bouncing away to the bass on this.

I won't really go into CD2, but if you want a document of good Drum & Bass it's definitely worth a look.

Mike_V Thanks for that compilation, funky was something I never delved into but it's nice to have a starting point for it.

It's also worth pointing out there was another volume of this out a year or two before this volume and it's just as good. Doesn't have the D&B disc either, nothing but pure Garage.

And we used to like to use the 8-bar tag a lot back then, though I guess looking back it wasn't exactly the most descriptive of things. At least Sublow for instance got your imagination running a bit more. Weirdly enough I still remember calling a lot of Dubstep simply Dark Garage for a long time, even right into '06, though a lot of that was probably due just as much me trying to communicate it a bit easier as at least then a lot more people had an idea of what Garage was, the term Dubstep hadn't really filtered down as much even then and you'd generally be met with a blank look if you mentioned that name.
