i got it running well enough to take it for a quick, gentle* jaunt across town to put some gas in it. this is the first time it's gone further than around the block under my ownership. windshield up, tho.

*the axle spring perches still aren't welded in properly, and these tires are 19 years old, so it's not going to be driven much further than that until i get a couple more items checked off my list.

but i drove it, so it now qualifies as "my ride"

It might be goofy looking, but I'm still impressed that the Wrangler has survived this far into modern safety regs

ok, so the original production willys mb was basically just a tractor. you could fold down the top and windshield and be totally exposed if you wanted.

the later CJ's are pretty much the same thing, just with more rounded sheet metal. they added a factory roll bar at some point.

the YJ keeps the style going, but with a bit more substantial of a roll bar.

the TJ is basically the same thing, but a little more modern. this was the last proper jeep.

the JK... now things are starting to look a little silly. it looks like a car someone took a sawzall to.

then the JL... well. kind of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

*plop*

worth noting too that the original jeep (the piece of military materiel) was designed that way for crating purposes. it had to fit inside a certain envelope for shipping and they achieved that by dropping the front windshield - amongst a few other things. probably most posters on AI already know that:

there is basically no reason a modern jeep should have this feature, aside from lineage purposes. driving on a paved road in traffic with no windshield is obviously idiotic. jeep owners sometimes claim that wheeling on trails is better with the windshield down for visibility purposes, and maaaaaaybe on CJs that was true, but i've done a fair bit in my 4runner and also in the passenger seat of jeeps and i don't believe that. so for jeeps to go way out of their way to still include this "feature" which is a pain to set up and affords no benefit and looks increasingly comical is just icing on the jeep cake for jeep haters lol

We're fucking built for this shit!
To be fair, I think they were going to drop it for the JK but the "purists" started crying and bleating when rumors of the fold-down windshield going away started going round.

Incidentally, I've had the opportunity to drive my sisters 2013 Unlimited Rubicon (70k miles) and I'd swear in a court of law that outside of having much better brakes it straight up drives worse than my 2000 4Runner (254k miles).

Yeah but the 4Runner lost it's manual transmission over two decades ago, and the Jeep didn't.

I love that raspberry color on that new JK, and also love the light blue they do. Chrysler has always done a great job on picking good looking paints.

I off roaded a few times in my CJ-7 with the windshield down and it feels kind of neat just because it’s so weird but I really don’t think it made a difference in visibility.

i think you ought to be able to find something really nice between 5k and 10k, or something a little rougher under 5k. it's in a weird spot because it's not old enough to be a classic and it's not new enough to have the upgrades the TJ does. i would encourage you to keep an eye out (and not buy a four cylinder)!

I’ve driven a couple JK and JLs, including rubicons, diesels, autos, and manuals of several variations.

They’re all loving terrible. I’ve been in brand new $70,000 hardtop rubicons where you can see light through the fuckin door seals when the doors are closed. They can be optioned to be reasonably capable off-road, but they are like 90% a lifestyle statement rather than

They are comical trash, and are purely a cash grab for Chrysler. It remains to be seen if the Bronco shocks them into producing a vehicle that deserves to be sold in the twenty first century.

This is pretty accurate. They're poorly constructed and a lot of that is hidden behind "Its a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand." The wrangler line really has had little innovation over the last two models, and while the JLs tarted up the interior a bit, mostly the vehicle has gone completely unchallenged and uninspired.

The Bronco interior alone is such a massive functional upgrade if you actually want to use your vehicle for going off pavement. While the inside looks "cheap" being like 80% vinyl, functionally its great. The buttons are large and all sealed up, the materials feel sturdy even if they don't look "premium" and its way more comfortable to sit in for longer periods of time than any of my Wranglers. If anything even with the whole drat thing being a giant vinyl panel, the biggest impression I took away from my first trip in a Bronco was that the interior felt sturdy as poo poo and like it wasn't going to get ruined by the first rainstorm it encountered.

It drives better on pavement, most of what you'd want to do to it is all factory option-able, the larger v6 engine gets about the same gas mileage as a Rubicon despite having better power and moving a heavier vehicle, and the 10sp auto is a pretty nicely done transmission.

Jeeps aren't that great and they have a massive lifestyle attachment to them that has turned them into a trendy instagram SUV rather than a functional piece of automotive kit.

E: That being said Ford bungled the Bronco launch in such a spectacular fashion and still have gremlins and other things to work out on the platform even coming into their 3rd year of "production" so... I don't think Jeep feels particularly threatened yet.

I have gone over a full calendar year since I have purchased a vehicle (but I did make up for it in 2021 by purchasing two). I sold both Japan cars in 2022 and made it two weeks into the new year by buying a new car. This has been a thing I have been dreaming of since I bought my first LX 470 ~4 years ago and even deeper since we got our teardrop trailer and have been off roading/camping more. A towing machine with a little more power and comfort will allow for me to go longer distances and appease the wife and kids.

2013 LX 570, 130K miles. I bought it locally for a fair price (not a bargain but did not overpay). I am ordering tires and wheels today on my way home from work. Subsequent things will also include replacing every fluid and filter on the machine.

at the credit union giving the dude his money

At home in the driveway. Parked in "HIGH" mode. Currently sitting on 22" abominations (heinous).

I will be getting some 17" Icons with BFG KO2 (white letters out). Bronze is the likely color. This is a 2016 Land Cruiser with the tire setup I will go with:

This will be taking place of our 2013 Ford Flex w/ ecoboost that has served faithfully for 7 years but I will be listing it soon after cleaning up.

This will also mean I have a lot more interesting things to post in my thread.

It’s because the LX 570 has hydraulic suspension. There are three modes; normal, low and high. Normal is exactly what you think it is. Low is for easier Ingres/egress. High lifts it ~2+ inches. Once you go over 20mph it lowers to normal height. High mode in park is the ultimate hard park.
