Toxic Avenger's in the weird middle point between that and the 'kid-friendly adaptation of adult movies' trend that got us the Killer Tomatoes show, the Police Academy one, the Rambo show, etc.

A middle point between?

Police Academy is a weird franchise example where the first movie is rated R but they realized that most of their audience had actually only watched the edited version on TV so the rest of them are only PG-13 and PG, which leads pretty naturally into a kids cartoon series.

Robocop's always my go-to example. There were also those Aliens figures that felt like somebody was trying to turn that into a cartoon.

So apparently Operation: Aliens never got to the point where they were going to make a cartoon series, but they did use that name for their interlinked action figure line and comic book series. What confuses fans is that they made short cartoons to advertise the action figures, and mistook that for footage from a cartoon we never got to see.

Exploration is ill-advised.
Sam and Max also had a cartoon, though that only needed to tone it down a bit in comparison.

A lot of them work better than you might think, at least conceptually, Toxic Crusaders playing up the goofiness of monstrous mutant heroes just in time for the 90s gross-out trend, and Police Academy was already pretty much a cartoon anyway. Pretty much the idea that they already have a lot of appeal to kids and just needed to be presented in a way to get past the watchdogs now that ratings were actually being enforced somewhat.

I mostly just find it ironic considering the fact that game is the one that basically invented the ESRB rating system (even though the Atari had literal porn games on it).

I do seem to recall the 90’s cartoon being surprisingly faithful to the game’s story in some areas though

Also out of curiosity, how exactly did the Rambo cartoon work given the source material?

It is worth bringing up that TMNT started off as a rather violent indie comic before becoming the children's media and merchandising juggernaut of the late 80's and 90's, which in retrospect is probably part of why TMNT as a franchise has been able to have such lasting legs

So did Cadillacs & Dinosaurs get a proper ending or did it just stop prematurely (also how’s the comic it was based on?)

I remember Pirates of Dark Water being pretty good too (and ironically enough it actually did get an ending of sorts in the Genesis version of the video game)

No, it just stops. The comic does the same after about a dozen issues.

That video up-thread mentioned a 2020 Kickstarter to get the series fully collected, and the author said he had a 80 page story he was going to wrap it with in the works. The former exists now, and I could not find a single trace of the latter anywhere because I probably would have splurged on both if a conclusion existed.

I know why, The main theme song for Ouran host club is "Kiss kiss, fall in love" The Myx episode of superman was called "Kiss Kiss, fall in portal" Because the writing team are also clearly fans of that anime.

As am I, its loving hilarious despite being a romance anime.
Basically, Rich people are stupid the anime.

The game definitely has an ending. It’s... fine. About what you would expect from that era of Capcom.

If you can find them, the two Dark Horse volumes that reprint the comic are slick. I guess Topps ran a midquel series for about a year, with Mark Schultz’ blessing, that also ended somewhat abruptly before the original series had even fully petered out. About the same lifespan as the cartoon.

Really weird that the whole thing died multiple simultaneous deaths. Like someone realized it wasn’t going to be able to compete with Jurassic Park and just let it go.

Which is weird because it feels more like a Turok: Dinosaur Hunter competitor more than anything else. But yeah, it's a shame that it doesn't have a definitive ending regardless of incarnation but a lot of also ran stuff like that from the 90s that made the jump to animation suffered the same fate.

I'm not particularly sure that it was necessary for the TMNT to have a much darker beginning source material, since the Archie comics also got weirdly dark after they drifted from the show, but definitely the more-serious 2003 TMNT pulled a lot from Mirage.

I guess Marvel Transformers similarly took its own weird dark turns that would later be totally ignored by later incarnations of the series, even the ones that went on to make more adult content.

The Tick I think largely benefitted from the cartoon dragging it away from more adult territory. Maybe a little was lost because there was a lot of mature humor in the comic (mature as in humor about adult life for middle-aged people, Arthur is going through a midlife crisis), but much of that can still shine through.

I don't know any other indie comics that got a big cartoon, although I'm sure there's been plenty of small ones. I guess Men in Black in a roundabout way, but the movie totally reinvented everything, and the original comic wasn't very fun because it wasn't a comedy. It was more of some kind of horror story, which I guess is a natural conclusion for a secret unaccountable police force with access to power beyond your comprehension and the ability to erase or rewrite memories. The boom of conspiracy theories as cool lore-filled secret worlds in fiction was weird.

Just watched the latest Superman, this version of Vicki Vale is kind of a bitch honestly (also Lex returns and is inching closer to the point of being like his other counterparts) and Ivo’s formed his own Suicide Squad esque group with the other suit users under the General’s control. I like how they’re handling Clark’s development and look forward to seeing Part 2

Having a much more somber version of the credits this time was a nice touch as well

Loved TMNT Mutant Mayhem enough that I started putting the 87 show on in the background during my work, dabbling in the original Mirage comics from time to time too.

Its weird to think of how influential this show is in not only the broader cultural 90s zeitgeist, but in terms of the franchise. While there's some small personality differences between the Mirage Turtles, they tend to easily blend together. They still kind of provide the same sort of quips as each other in the show, but the personality archetypes are pretty quick to settle into focus. By the end of the second season, the quips feel more purposeful for their personalities. Raphael remains the most cynical and biting towards the others, although he also gets the corniest lines seemingly because he cares more about what entertains himself rather than what entertains the others. Mikey gets the goofier lines, while Donnie sits somewhere in-between. Leo very quickly becomes the straight-forward, sincere turtle, which gives the other cast members perfect opportunities to olly up a dunk on his personality. More than a hero team, its a comedy troupe. Raph is Groucho, Donnie is Chico, Mikey is Harpo, and Leo is Zeppo.

For all the personality work done to establish the cast, its kind of surprising how little the show centers familial dynamics as a presence. The turtles are comedians first, casual friends second, coworkers third, siblings last. By the same token, the relationship between the turtles and Splinter is purely professional. He's their mentor, not their dad. The most compelling focus on their friendship is "Splinter No More", where he briefly returns to human form. Its the first time the show really lets the cast sit in feelings, as the turtles genuinely wonder if Splinter will abandon them once he's free to live as a human. Its a great episode.

On top of all that, April's relationship with the cast is interesting in how little she seems to like most of them. I think this would bother me a lot as a kid, but it actually works well for the dynamic. She's 28. They're 16. She's stuck with them in her life forever. Its easy to see why she can feel equal parts fondness and annoyance. It also means she bonds quickly with Splinter, giving the two of them plenty of time to just chill together between adventures. With the other turtles so irreverent, its nice to see that friendship. I think the change to make April a teenager is a smart choice for the character dynamics in turtles works 2012 onward, but its still nice to see how that relationship plays out in the 80s.

Don't know how long I'll stick with the show, I got really existential when I watched too many back to back one day, but its pretty easy to skip ahead to the Red Sky seasons and the '03 show if I feel like it.
