When is xboneX getting VR? Like, I’ve never used VR and I want to play some of these immersive experiences.

VR is already on its last legs. Expect a reduced presence at CES next week.

Is 4k even a thing over there, I wouldn't think so. It's already a niche market here.

Complicating matters is I don't think many people have big screens there, it's mostly 30-something inches at most from what I've seen which is limiting for harnessing 4K goodness. I also don't believe any actual Japanese movies other than Your Name have even been released on 4K UHD (and some of those pretty scenery discs). Hell, now that I think about it, there are a really loving small number of non-American movies that have been released on the format full stop. I think it's just the odd older movie that happened to have a well-timed 4K restoration, like Suspiria.

The opening outdoors bit of RE7 is really rough looking on all versions, even PC, due to the anti-aliasing solution it uses. It gets better once you get indoors a few minutes into the game.

VR's future, if it has one, lies in cheap ($200) self-contained units with phone hardware that just do wraparound video or simpler-than-AAA-games 3D graphics. It's looking pretty obvious that the "hook it up to powerful hardware and ideally give it a room of your house" paradigm isn't going to catch on the way they want. Most of those PSVRs are already collecting dust.

Microsoft already has Hololens that's supposed to come out eventually. and cost $5000. Eventually you're supposed to be able to stream your Xbox one to a PC and use an Oculus Rift to play your xbox one games in a nicer VR living room.

CES is about future trends, not imminent releases. Like we'll probably not see much of smartwatches this year either after a few years of being predicted to be the next big thing. That makes me sad, I love smartwatches. But I can see they just aren't taking off. I think VR is in the same boat. Some people love it, but the majority aren't playing it and the future looks grim. That's just my prediction, I can understand wanting to see it succeed if you love VR.

I'm not some bloomberg analyst sitting here with spreadsheets, but I've seen enough attempts at New poo poo to be able to get a sense of what's "working right now" and what's actually taking hold. VR seems to be in the former category. Kinect 1.0 (and especially the Wii) sold a lot of units, too, but the public got their fill of it, maybe checked in a couple of years later, saw that it was still basically the same thing, and said "nah I'm good." If the games can't get past their current cockpit sims/rail shooters/teleport-for-movement rut with something compelling that has more than an hour of novelty, it's going to fade away. I'd love to be surprised by some brilliant new paradigm of gaming, but adding a bad VR mode to existing Gamebryo RPGs and making VR bonus content for games that are otherwise played on a screen isn't going to keep this alive, and indies need to make their money back too. The anti-social aspect of it really hurts its long-term prospects for being a mass consumer product, IMO. At least with the Wii people would have fun together. With VR, the "social" version of it is a group of people taking turns putting their head in the thing.

There's around 150 games for PSVR, including a few AAA titles. Dozens of them are good. I have about 35 games for it and all but a couple are really solid, and there are still a good chunk of well received games I haven't even gotten around to buying . I've never run out of stuff to play and there is plenty of stuff on the way. Along with selling 2 million units. How is any of that damning for a 1 year old platform? Nothing you have said seems based in anything but your own bias.

TheScott2K posted:With VR, the "social" version of it is a group of people taking turns putting their head in the thing. This mostly just requires getting clever with your game design to allow for it, it works pretty well with Playroom VR in its various incarnations especially for Mario Party-like 1-vs-everyone else stuff, especially since the PS4 does explicitly output something to the TV as well (usually the same image as in the headset but some games do allow distinct visuals on the TV too). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itIlxFaBkcM And you have neat stuff like "Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes" which it also works very well for. There are definitely some stricter single player-only titles but then the same is true of non-VR games, and even then there's shenanigans you can get up to in a social environment for it, like watching someone lose their goddamn mind roaming around in Resident Evil VII.

VR isn't replacing TV gaming you maroons, it's a separate thing. I don't know why you spergs can't understand that. While we're comparing numbers of things that aren't comparable, the VR thread has been open 2.5 times longer than this thread but has six times as many pages. I guess consoles are dead now.
