You mess with the crabbo...

Just got through Dead Space 2, and it continued to be a very satisfying mix of some jumps and spooks with a good emphasis on shootin' stuff.

I thought the presentation of hallucinatory Nicole was kind of striking as a horror element, she often has blinding light emitting from her mouth and eye sockets when you run into her. It's really neat looking, but it also felt familiar - is there some movie or something that it's cribbing from? It feels like it's right on the tip of my mind but I can't quite remember.

There's a scene in Dead Alive/Braindead where a woman gets a lightbulb stuck in her head and it looks a lot like that screenshot.

After thinking about it, there's a bit of it in the ending to Raiders of the Lost Ark too. I'm probably combining half-memories of a bunch of those.

Village of the Damned and the music video for M83’s Midnight City both have children doing the glowing eye thing. No mouth though.

I really wanted to say it was cribbing from The World's End but that movie came out a couple of years after Dead Space 2. It wouldn't surprise me if the eye glowing in The World's End was a reference to something older though.

You hit 100% Doom and GOIZO devoured everything in sight of a reflection, game over. Check out the game over screen- it tells you why you died.

Funniest thing though is there’s no facial animation so you have people being killed and screaming with a total closed mouth blank expression.

Isn't that not even out yet? It's not out on steam and considering they seem to be going for "high effort edge" i'd expect them to fix that before then.

Ahhhhhh there it is. I'm sure I was mixing in some of the other stuff mentioned, but that was the exact one I was centered on. Interesting that it's not even as old as the game, nowhere near as old as I was expecting.

The facial expression and scream are themselves a reference to Invasion of the Body Snatchers I believe. The whole film is basically Body Snatchers.

Not only are they not done, but people still seem to evangelize the creator as the One True Person who can do it right. Because of course people would rather support a Trumper fundie than a studio that dares rush the robot bear game.

Given how morbid the subject-matter is throughout in The Forgotten City, as it doesn't whitewash Roman values, it was surprising that the game has a happy canon ending.

Definitely up there with Outer Wilds, though its timeloop mechanic is less noticible since there is no ticking-clock.

Didn't like the Sexy Brutale as its last act and ending sunk the whole experience.

Will never play 12 Minutes.

Manhunt 2 had a dumb, obvious Fight Club twist and was broadly speaking boring and bad, notable only for being the strawman the Jack Thompsons and Hilary Clintons of the age railed against.

also it came out on psp which is a very funny joke. now you can murder/kill the innocent on the go.

To be fair to Manhunt, I can't think of actually killing anyone 'innocent' in the series, 1 in particular I can definitely say that for, while 2 there might have been someone I'm forgetting, but pretty much everyone who gets it in both games is a monster. 1 it's James Earl Cash against the likes of white supremacists (The Skinz), crazed right wingers wanting to thrill kill (Wardogs) and murder cult style gangs (Innocentz) before you even get to the private security guys knowingly working for a big snuff film ring in the Cerberus guys. 2 you've got Danny Lamb and again pretty much anyone you kill is something like pseudo-CIA spooks as the Project black suit and mask guys and otherwise guys working on and around the not-MKULTRA plot, a return of right winger/white supremacist type militia gunmen hired to chase him down, corrupt cops just flat out and even the BDSM dudes on the club level are seemingly involved with the greater Hostel style Project stuff going on in the basement.

It's been a very long game since I played it and I don't think I beat it, but at least Wikipedia suggests that there are civilians you can kill in 2.

Wikipedia posted:

An alternate ending is unlocked on the Hard difficulty or if the player killed too many civilians throughout the game, resulting in the final battle being played from Leo's perspective. He successfully destroys Daniel's personality and wakes up in control of his mind and body. Whyte, believing she is speaking to Daniel, asks him if he is okay, to which he replies he is keen to get back to work on the Bridge. As he looks at himself in the mirror, Daniel sees Leo's reflection looking back at him.

i thought the mechanism for determining which ending you got in manhunt 2 wasnt civilian deaths (which i dont remember any) but if you go for the red executions or not

either way its a terrible game

a shame because the first one rocked

Ooooh looking it up, okay yeah there's a few like uninvolved in the bigger deal people around, some of them are kind of like setpiece kills almost, one of them's in the Hostel basement in an electric chair you can throw the switch on, the non-hostile Project victims in the opening asylum part, there's a few like strippers around and couple prostitutes when it comes to the seedy building bit I remember a bit of, a few hobos here and there in the city bit with the corrupt cops, then some more normal looking guys that show up in the levels where you're running through the suburban neighborhood from the militia guys, so I guess they are there, but at the same time I feel a little better about not immediately remembering them, because apparently a number of the 'civilian' models are also Project hunters at times in some levels, so I guess I rolled some of the more normal looking people models into thinking they were primarily enemies too.

It's pretty dope.
I adore the first Manhunt up until guns are introduced. The sequel has some gnarly kills if you played the uncut version with the mod that stops the camera from moving around during the kill. It isn't good though. The twist is so obvious that I was surprised it was presented as one? It's not even the part where nobody acknowledges your buddy, or how he gets past all the enemies you have to take out to progress. It's the part where he disappears and then talks to you like he's in your ear, without a radio or any other way of remote communication...

Apparently the twist was added very late in development, which definitely tracks.
