I think it's more likely that the story will end without a lot of couples anyway. Avatar was indeed a shipping hotbed but you still had some great/notable characters like Toph off on their own and doing just fine. The only thing I sort of get a gut feeling about is that Jade and Dave will never really be a thing (the stuff with Davesprite seems like it was the only bone thrown that direction).

One thing I absolutely love about Homestuck is the anti-climaxes. I can't explain why, but it just resonates with me. Fister Roboto posted:Murder all homestuck fans. That's the thing though. I don't think they're really Homestuck fans so much as like these weird roaming shippers who latch onto whatever they can find. Like if you asked them about Dave or Rose's personalities they'd just be like "THEY'RE SO PRECIOUS!" or "Dave is so cool!" without really understanding anything about the characters or the plot on more than a surface level. Meulin is the best satire of this. When she asked Meenah why they didn't hang out all the time and be better friends and Meenah was just like "I literally tried to kill you wtf." It's like they're flipping through the pages of a book and stopping to gape at the illustrations above the chapter titles but having no understanding of what those illustrations mean within the context of the work.

Wherever in fiction there are siblings, there are incest shippers. It's completely independent of the work itself; they just see a set of siblings and they loving pounce. If it's showed up in Gravity Falls (and it has ), it's gonna show up here. I suspect none of them have siblings themselves. Or I HOPE they don't, anyway. That would explain why they can fetishize the forbidden taboo without getting squicked out, and also why they consistently interpret any sort of affection or closeness between siblings as sexual tension. They don't know what having siblings is like, so they don't know any better. Or maybe they DO have siblings, and their family gatherings are the most uncomfortable thing ever. Either way. floofyscorp posted:Hussie takes the piss out of obsessive fan shipping in the comic itself, I wonder sometimes if he decided that the kids would be siblings just to see what the shipping reaction would be. I always figured (hoped) that people who ship siblings do so just because they like the idea of those two personalities and character designs/depictions being in a relationship, and is completely independent of the fact that they are siblings. Wishful thinking, I know. My friend was recently laughing about how goon fans of Game of Thrones (the TV show, and the books too I guess) wanted to see Sandor and Sansa in a relationship (the SanSan movement), but couldn't remember the term they used. I immediately told him, "Yeah, it's called shipping." To which he immediately replied. "Yeah, that's it! .... you loving nerd."

In fact the group most successfully pranked would probably be you guys. He introduces a character that represents something you love to hate- a furry, a juggalo, a twilight fan, a fangirl shipper, and so on. He then makes fun of them, as you'd expect. He shows what silly people they are to draw you in... and then he does something really nefarious. He makes you love them. There are a few irredeemable bit characters, especially among the ancestor trolls, but the only major character who's really a straight up negative reflection of a group is Lord English himself. And guess what, Caliborn represents shallow hateful fans- contrasted with his sister, the obsessive fans that ship characters and draw great fanart. Hussie loves the shippers and the weirdos and all the awkward deviants who are drawn to this comic. Homestuck doesn't mock them, it celebrates them, in that wonderful grotesque way it does. It's you guys. You guys are the only group Hussie is actually pranking, who Hussie is actually "playing like a stupid violin he hates". And it's beautiful.

The notion of an alien being a human otherkin is pretty funny, and his actual visual aesthetic is cool. Considering the dude is almost certainly going to be first against the wall when the pre-scratch trolls start kicking it, and he isn't so much a character as a touchstone for being repugnant, that's already pretty generous.

I think this is why he kind of caught people off-guard by how awful he is. Eridan already looks like an rear end in a top hat, but Cronus looks like he could be a cool dude. So when a lot of the other teen ancestors are switching things up, like Meenah compared to Feferi and Aranea compared to Vriska, you kind of expect Cronus to do the same. Maybe be successful at the things Eridan was a failure at, or maybe have a better approach to life in general- Except then he's just worse. So much worse. And so you end up with a character who subverts the expectation of him subverting expectations, which is kind of memorable in and of itself I suppose. (by the time you get to Horuss its obvious there's no hard rule for these new characters so him being mega-equius isn't as much of a surprise) It's not hard to imagine Cronus growing up into the bitter, intensely jealous Orphaner Dualscar, really. Who, with a title like 'Orphaner' is obviously not a sympathetic character. Homestuck is not so kind to us Aquarius-types.

They were jokes that were just as funny to the Tumblr community as they were to anyone else- probably more so.
