Frank Caskelot posted:It was the band's page, here: http://noladiy.org/thoupast.html The more time I spend listening to Thou the more I love them. Absolutely stoked to hear there's a new full-length coming soon. Weirdly, I think their lyrics are part of why I love them so much. Generally for me, good, thought-provoking lyrics are nice if they're present, but not necessary for me to enjoy a song overall. This is especially true in stoner and doom (and metal more generally), where it's all about the riff and vocals can be indecipherable anyway. And yet, even though Thou's lyrics aren't easy to discern, the fact that they're very well-written and cover interesting political and spiritual themes is a massive bonus. Even though the songs are funereally slow and the lyrics often come from a very misanthropic place, they often feel strangely uplifting, because of the themes of transcending the petty restrictions of modern society and its limiting thought patterns. You could almost see Summit, for example, as a concept album about transcending the artificially-induced limits of human potential- hardly unique subject matter for metal, but expressed in a way that hints at the intellectual and spiritual enlightenment such a movement could provide. OK, enough psychobabble. Let us join hands in a ritual of self destruction. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2q57_D_6VY Or failing that, gently caress THE POLICE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7agqioQhxY

HOLY poo poo. I saw High on Fire live for the first time tonight. I've been waiting to see High on Fire live for 2-3 years now. Holy poo poo. They were loving amazing. The guitar tone was perfect, Rumours of War sounded apocalyptically heavy. Great show. The band were clearly all really into it as well, and Matt Pike was on top form. I couldn't have asked for a better performance really. The pit was really good natured as well, great gig.

Just got my Clutch/Orange Goblin ticket in the mail. I never imagined that I would get the chance to see the Goblin, and I certainly never imagined that they would be embarking on a full North American tour! It's nice to see OG getting the recognition and exposure they deserve, as they're one of the all-time classic "stoner rock" bands.

I also got tickets for Clutch/OG next month. It's in a really small venue, and it's always exciting to see big bands like that play there. I've seen Clutch once before, when Baroness was opening for them. It was in a pretty old building, and it was insanely hot because the A/C was broken. Great show, though, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing them again. Never seen OG live, but that should kick rear end too.

Got my tickets for the Seattle show, and amped to see Orange Goblin. I figured I wouldn't ever get a chance to see them live. I'm seriously relieved that they aren't doing the show in the poo poo-rear end venue that Clutch was played in last time they were here.

There's a new Dragged Into Sunlight/Gnaw Their Tongues Off Collaboration that's up for today only, moderately slow then very very fast then moderately slow: https://soundcloud.com/vagrantrecordings/dragged-into-sunlight-gnaw-1/s-74Kqd The new Uncle Acid sounds pretty neat. I think it will be hard to top some of the songs from the previous album, hopefully I'm wrong about that. Also, I was revisiting the band Dopelord. Initially I found them to be a bit derivative or corny. Finally making it through the fourth track, Unihorn, has changed my mind about them. Solid. Lucifer's Son is pretty rad too.

Yeah, they're pretty awesome though sadly departed. Murdering the Homeless will always have a place in my heart. Vaguely related, http://ninehertz.co.uk/ is quite a good site for stoner/doom/sludge and other music that tends to get lumped together with that. They're especially good for hearing about smaller UK bands, and in fact a lot of band members (including some from Bumsnogger, which is what reminded me) post in their forum.

Ha, I found those guys when they played a show with Orchid and Earthless a few years ago. Their song "Turk Taylor and Jones" is great. Version below isn't what's on the EP though, vocals sound higher. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZTkc94APGY Funny how you go see one band and the opening band(s) end up being the great find for you.

I'm on the fence about it right now. I've listened to it a couple of times but I was writing both times. Maybe I'll give it a listen while I'm driving. For whatever reason music really "clicks" for me when I'm listening to it while driving. It just really didn't hook me in any way.

I've really been enjoying Tobeatic's debut album lately. They're an excellent live band composed of Vancouver scene vets, and their tunes are a tasty mix of hard rock styles. "All To Hell" and "Frozen Ocean" are the standout tracks, with the former being a guaranteed headbanger.

I was listening to Burning Witch today and wondered what had happened to the vocalist, Edgy 59. Did a bit of Googling and found a pretty cool interview with him from a couple of years ago which describes what (in his view) the band was all about, why it broke up and so on: http://www.thesleepingshaman.com/interviews/a-f/edgy-59-interview/. He sounds like a strange guy, but it's an interesting read. From there I found out about his current project, Bird Eye, which sounds a lot like Burning Witch going off the one sample there is online at their MySpace Maybe a bit less heavy and the production quality isn't great. That track is from a split with Transatlantic Rat's Atom released on Streaks Records here. He's also been working on a band called The Poisoned Glass, who have released a single song on the Falling Down II compilation, a short excerpt of which is on MySpace here. From what's there I actually prefer that sound to Bird Eye. Also made me aware of Burning Witch's one TV appearance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdQKpq4qXfU Stillborn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDLCv2PYE5w Unreleased song, Edgy 59 says it's called Siren Song in the interview. (1/2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPH27hLNXPo Unreleased song. (2/2) Not really doom, but if you want to hear what one of his earlier bands, Junkhalo, was like, a few of their weird as hell synth/noise/punk songs from their Bugs Eating EP are available for free at ReverbNation. A bit like a less polished Boredoms.
