I think they basically got replaced by a combination of air support, mortars, heavy machineguns, and AFVs. It's kind of awkward to lug one around in a modern mechanized military. But they still make HE shells for most tanks. And between that and the rest of the stuff you have, there's not a huge need to lob big explosive shells directly at things from a static position. I'm not sure if I should post this in the scale model thread or here, but Here's a article on the National Air and Space Museum restoring the wings of a He 219 'Owl' night fighter. In addition to all the work in what sounds close to macro-model painting, it also talks about the decision to restore the aircraft as it historically was, instead of it RLM regulation. (Apparently lots of 'spergs emailed to say the Balkan crosses were in the "wrong place" IE not the place where the RLM rules said they should be.)

JcDent posted:I don't think they're a thing anymore, unless they happen to be in AVRE's or something. Currently, a infantry squad had man portable stuff like LAWs, RPGs and Carl Gustavs, as well as under-barrel grenade launchers to take care of MG nests and other stuff that you needed a stubby StuG for. And when you need something bigger removed, you get an MBT to roll in and deliver some of that 120mm goodness. And if that doesn't work/you're stuck in some shithole that doesn't have tank access, artillery and air strikes exist. Automatic grenade launchers fill some of that role between an under-barrel gl and a mortar and I think would be the most analogous to infantry guns, especially the WW1 light support guns like https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_d%27Infanterie_de_37_mod%E8le_1916_TRP

A period accurate uniform with all the kit will set you back like ~$1200, although taking an 1855 Springfield and bayonet to a party is probably a bad idea.

Anyone here know if the series about the US bomber crews ever got off the ground(hurrr)? It was called The Mighty Eight or something, to follow the Pacific and BoB.

The Mighty Eighth in reference the 8th Air Force, and supposedly it's in production with a huge budget and should be out ~2019. EDIT: The name is a bit of an anachronism. It comes from the title of Roger Freeman's book about the 8 AF during World War 2 which was published in 1970 and was picked up as a nickname after that. Comrade Gorbash posted:Post-WW2, crew serviced recoilless rifles seem to have ended up taking over this role for pretty much everyone. They were generally designed for the anti-tank role, but were also used pretty extensively for direct-fire support. The US designed the M20 as an anti-tank gun in WW2 but by Korea found it wasn't effective against the T-34. It still turned out to be extremely useful against pillboxes, lighter armored vehicles, dug in infantry - basically the sorts of targets you describe. The M40 was used in similar ways in Vietnam. The Carl etc are basically a logical portable evolution of the recoilless rifle (firing principles are the same, capabilities are similar), which trades some firepower for mobility.

Overpressure makes most of the sound and visual effects for an explosion, but it's the fragments that kill. And HEAT warheads are not made to make fragments.

If the pressure wave and subsequent vaccum was powerful enough...say... from a thermobaric, it could definitely kill.
