I think it's fair to compare this game with previous ME titles as well as knock those previous titles. Why? Because everyone knocking on this game is doing so for the same flaws the previous title had. If this game is bad, so we're ME 1-3. But this game isn't bad. Neither were 1-3. Everyone's too busy patting themselves on their backs putting this game down and acting like ME2 was Bioware's peak.

Personally I love the original trilogy. And this game is extremely my poo poo too as it's more of what I love from the series.

There are a few things to know going in, real differences that matter to some. And it isn't the writing, dialogue, or animations.

1. It's semi open world now and comes with all the grand vistas and tedious side activity that all that entails.

2. Combat feels much better but now you cannot really control your companions in combat. I'd say it equals out but I do miss being able to tell my dudes when to use poo poo.

If you were looking forward to the first Mass Effect when Bioware was talking up how big and diverse the planets were and how you'd travel a galaxy, etc, then it stands to reason you'd like this.

To me, this game is what I pictured in my head back before I played the first game and was looking forward to it. It's awesome!

I don't think that was resolved. First of all, Cora's own personality shouldn't matter. Secondly, if you are Scott Ryder and start dating Cora, would you tell her Alec Ryder's plan of making either children the next Pathfinder in order to abuse the position and resources to save mom? If you have a hard time telling her that, then it was lovely thing to do.

Ah yeah, definitely. Resolved meaning it's probably not gonna cause conflict, not that it's ethical. Better ways to go about it.

Has anyone had any trouble clearing the mine field on Voeld?

I cleared a few and then fast traveled to a drop point or whatever they're called. I drove back to the spot to resume clearing mines. I found one and blowing it caused a chain reaction and blew up a ton of them but I guess there's still some left. I also noticed when I returned I wasn't getting the beeping tone to indicate how close you are.

Anyone experience this? Any way to reset it or something?

The lack of control with the squad takes some getting used to. Enemies flank a lot and not having an extra Singularity/Cryo Blast/etc. hurts when you're surrounded. My solution was to embrace Charge and load up on cooldown reduction.

I'll give the enemy AI this: they flank like assholes. They rarely get locked down in cover and maintain a mobility that forces you to use the new movement system if you want to survive.

Also I love rolling with Drack because I'll be sitting back a ways, tossing out lances, and suddenly he'll come running from the side of my view and slam into a pack of enemies. He seems invincible and since his AI really wants to melee he is way better than the other squadmates at getting poo poo done. Although all the squadmates are better this time around. I see them actually killing poo poo and setting off their own combos all the time.

No, not that one.
I started playing this game earlier today and so far I'm having a really good time with it. Yeah, there's some janky animations (though seriously nothing worse than we've seen in the OT) and some bad lines (pretty much nothing can salvage "my face is tired from dealing with, everything") but I really like Sara Ryder and the crewmates I've met so far (Liam, Cora, Vetra). The story's holding my attention so far (I'm only now heading to Eos) and I'm eager to play more when I get back from running a couple of errands.

I don't suppose anyone could ELI5 research/development to me? I looked at the menu but there's a whole lot of information and the UI is, uh, shaky, and it's not really clicking with me.

The more I have a chance to think about it, the more I am bummed that they felt the need to shoe horn a big bad evil doer plot on a story that absolutely didn't need it. There is plenty of story meat and interesting plot hooks just in the idea behind the colonization of the new cluster, with complicated relationships between the various races and personalities, as well as any new species you might encounter. Like holy poo poo, give me the version of this game written by and for grown ups where everything is shades of gray and you are making hard calls and trying to survive in a new galaxy. Obviously you need enemies to shoot, but there is basically no reason to have a big scary evil doer and a big dumb universe ending plot device. Maybe I'm just a bit rosy on the game having completed the first vault and gone back to the Nexus for the first time, but that game is definitely in here somewhere, it just needed the right people to make it. And that clearly was not this team.

I think it a lot of it has to do with making sure they only had to design one set of bad guys to shoot at. Hell, you even get to shoot the same stupid animals in every planet.

Go to the dark jungle world and look around angaran places for mineral caches. I spent a lot of time starved for resources and those caches are just full of the rarest essentials.

DLC request: double jump jetpack. Gotta get a little more air on this thing.

Also, in 2017 why are we still using terminals/set locations for rote poo poo you'll be doing all the time? I have a loving omni-tool, why can't I call people to finish quests, spend AVP, send out strike teams and do R&D right from there? This isn't Dark Souls where the journey to a spot for doing things is interesting, or their locations are tied to a specific place that makes sense. They're just random terminals in the Tempest. I don't have the game, but from how I've seen it used you basically turn it on and drive around, essentially turning your car into the scanner from Mass Effect 2. When you find high numbers, you deploy a drone to collect the goods.

On your map you'll see an icon for mineral deposits. Drive to one and you'll see an indicator that says "Hey there's poo poo here." Turn on the mineral computer and drive around and you'll see those meters go up if there's poo poo near it. Hit a button and a mining thing drops down and you'll get resources. It's sorta like how it worked in ME3 when you'd scan a planet for resources.

When you're near a minerals rich area (denoted on your map when you setup a forward post) you drive around the area with your scanner on. You'll see lines go up in one or more of the four mineral columns as you drive over them. Then press whatever button to drop a mining drone over the area and voila!
