whoa, luvcow is reviving an amazing thread! my broken brain originally read skamonkas as some kind of twitch.tv logo, but it turns out that's the name of the ninth 29-day "month" of the Abenaki lunar calendar. If my understanding is correct, the planet Earth is currently in skamonkas, with the penibagos moon coming on October 6th 2021. I didn't know Native Americans named the moons in the lunar calendar. that is really neat. curious to see if the Old Ones are the same folks who experimented on ts-1031

penibagos far off in the distance a bluejay sings of the rising sun. you open your eyes and find yourself lying in the grass, the nuthatch and the other two mice still slumbering beside you. bramble nudges your side and whispers into your ear, "we slept through the winter...the spring and summer too..." looking around you see the black iron fence, the overgrown gardens and the derelict mansion looming above you. the leaves on the trees are beginning to change colors and the crisp autumn air blows around you. the visions of your dreams flash through your mind and you shudder. the world has moved on without you as you slept, changed in irrevocable ways. your friends stir and awaken, blinking their eyes as they take in the morning light. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b0Pt-k1hGo

you look to your friends, nuzzling into them as you all come to and try to grasp the world around you, sitting back in the grass as the sun rises, listening to the songbirds sing of the cool autumn morning. 1027 lies back and breathes deeply, a muffled squeak as he recalls the dreams and visions you all shared. 1015 stands and looks to you, reminding you of all the times you'd entered the long sleep while you lived at the arkham laboratories and how all of the 31 mice were present, dreaming as one. a sense of loneliness washes over you as you realize this time it was only your little group, the three mice, the rabbit and the bird. had the others had to survive the time in the woods as you slept? you recall your visions and how each night fewer and fewer of the dark beings gathered by the iron fence watching you until only one remained, keeping the watch, leering at you and your friends as you slumbered. 1015 looks to you and asks "what now? did we fail? is there still hope?" you sit in silence as the sun rises above the trees. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTuFeJOX-gs

where there is sunlight and friends there is always hope! if we concentrate on the other mice in our group of 31 (besides the three in our group), can we sense the presence of any of them? do we get any images of where they might be?

you sit back into the grass with your friends huddled around you as you slip into the unconscious. your mind swirls and then dives, letting the darkness envelop you and strip away your ego. the world pulses through you and slowly you become aware of the vast stretch of forest and fields, the animals that still live and those that linger beyond, kept here by the old ones to torment those who are foolish enough to still fight. only a handful of the original 31 still remain but it seems that they've been busy, meeting others and multiplying, scattering their genes amongst the local mice and forming small pockets of resistance. your mind settles onto one, a bold little mouse gripping tightly to a spear as he holds something at bay so his friends can run into the forest for cover. you sense an impending doom as he holds his ground, waiting to give his life to save the others. you try to scream, to call out for him to run, but as you do so you feel your ego return and you wake. staring into the faces of your friends you squeak out what you've found, there are others all around, in all directions, and they're struggling to survive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqaAs_3azSs

Stoner Sloth posted:>we can be heroes: go to the spot where help is most urgently needed! agree with this! but we should formulate some kind of plan, even if it's provisional/tentative. do we want to try to gather everyone together, or stay as a spread-out network? if the survivors are struggling, maybe the ancient estate with the wrought iron fence is the best gathering place, at least for now. another question we might ask is, is there something we can do to drive the old ones out of the forest? or is that a pipe dream? the animation on this one is amazing, just beautiful.

you tell the others of the mouse you'd seen standing his ground against an unknown horror and your need to help him. the nuthatch hops over to you and sings of the crows who cried of a threat to the northeast while you were in your trance and in the distance you can still hear them cawing. determined to act you spring onto his back and implore him to fly, bidding your friends farewell as you flit up into the air. you find yourself darting between the trees, gripping tightly to the little birds sturdy neck. within minutes you've arrived, landing on a lone maple tree's branch amidst a grove of beech. the crows signal from above that it's not safe yet and from your perch you survey the surrounding woods. below you are the signs of a struggle, ruffled leaves, scuffed dirt and a small pool of putrid black ichor. even from your height in the trees it crinkles your nose. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zs7FG7usAAw

you squeak to the nuthatch your plan and in moments he's swooped to the ground and effortlessly dropped you to the soft forest ground. you quickly gather yourself and draw your sword, staring ahead into the shadows. something snaps a branch, crunches the leaves, and a low gurgle comes from the darkness ahead. the sun offers little light in this grove and your heart stops as you realize you can't see clearly what approaches. the crows above call out for you to run, the nuthatch somewhere ahead sings of a fallen mouse he's found. you hold tightly to the sword, unsure if you even know how to use it properly. time seems to stand still and you take a deep breath, the foliage ahead starting to shimmer as something nears your position. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDz2Xk-LRN0

Manifisto posted:start scampering, but in the direction opposite the nuthatch and fallen mouse! gonna offer an alternate plan - we want this thing to find us, sorta gonna suggest we do the following. 1. tell the nuthatch to take the injured mouse back to the house asap 2. move between shelter, calling out to our enemy to get their attention but doing it in short bursts so that it doesn't know what direction we're in 3. try to get sight of it and look to see what's vulnerable 4. importantly don't run away - we need to be brave to protect our friends and running will only make us more vulnerable, instead lets look for openings to dart in and surprise it with hit & run strikes to weaken it |

hmmm there is a LOT of possible ideas, time to test some of the limits of our ability! these immediately come to mind a) straightforwards, get the nuthatch to carry our wounded friend back to safety - alert the others before they get back so they're ready to take the wounded one in and help them and let the nuthatch return - play cat & mouse with the whatever it is and use the psychic bond to time an escape once bird friend returns. b) depending on how powerful our bond can be, perhaps we can either use it to mentally attack our foe or even bend it to our will? c) if that is beyond our ability then maybe we can use the psychic bond to distract/confuse/inconvenience or otherwise delay the creature, possibly also read it's mind to figure out what it is and any weakness c) if that won't work perhaps we can bond with the crows and use them to launch a distraction as needed to help us escape? d) unconventional but perhaps we could contact the spirit of the sword or of the mouse who once owned it, borrow some fighting skills? e) alternatively perhaps we could channel the abilites of the others through our psychic bond? acting like a spotter for one of the others powers? there are other ideas but probably even more presumptious. what do folks think we should try? |

Manifisto posted:start scampering, but in the direction opposite the nuthatch and fallen mouse! This makes sense, provided that the nuthatch can tell if the fallen mouse is alive and it can save it. Either way if the crows say run, running and take cover make sense but creating a distraction might not make sense if it is for nothing.

the nuthatch, which we can hear but can't necessarily see, sang about a "fallen" mouse. we don't know whether the mouse is still with us, if it's alive how badly it's hurt, etc. so I don't think we have time to coordinate with the nuthatch until we've faced whatever's approaching. we might be able to fight whatever it is, but then again we might not, and the crows seem very insistent that we should run (i.e. it's probably something bad). I think we should try to see what it is before deciding whether to fight it, and hopefully scampering loudly will attract its attention and give the nuthatch and the fallen mouse time to escape or whatever. we can squeak out loud to make sure we don't get overlooked, yelling to the crows for help would accomplish this and possibly gain some allies as well I'm all for this idea of trying out psychic powers but I'd rather do it from behind some barrier / hiding place in case it doesn't work! also 1015's psychic powers seem to come at a terrible cost so we don't know exactly what we're messing with.

you grasp the sword and let your mind drift to it's former owner, the stuffed mouse in the attic room. a feeling of comfort washes over you as you deftly swing the sword through the air, a sudden understanding of it's use and weight winking into existence in your mind. the brush parts before you and a single black tendril snakes it's way through and hovers just above your head. an eerie calm descends upon the beech grove and you steady yourself as it appears to inspect you. there's something strangely familiar yet unnerving. you stand frozen for what seems like an eternity, the silence finally broken by the flit of the nuthatch's wings as it flies overhead, a terrified song echoing through the grove. he carries the limp body of a mouse with him and tells you he'll return shortly for you. the crows above break into a cacophony of alarm and in an instant the tendril retracts into the brush, followed by the hurried retreat of the creature into the woods. within moments you find yourself alone, your grip on the sword loosening as it drops to your side. whatever it was it recognized you, saw itself in you and the the horror of what they did to you in the labs creeps back into your mind. the crows are gone now, the nuthatch too, and you stand in silence on the soft forest floor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOz3VJD4L0o
