i like that posted:My brother is non-verbal autistic. He is not capable or reading or writing. He cannot cook or use money or live independently. He needs full-time supervision. A female veterinarian with a genius iq who has her own business and stable, successful career, who is raising happy children in a healthy marriage, can somehow have the same diagnosis. i like *you*

It's true researchers and psychiatry have no idea how to classify autism. There is an underlying "nuerotype" that is autism, but they only diagnose based on intellectual, emotional, or communicative delays. It is possible to be autistic without significant damage. It is much more likely to have developmental trauma and PTSD, or coincidental disorders like OCD and ADHD. There is a growing trend of adult diagnosis, especially when the adult's child is diagnosed, as there is a strong hereditary component to autism. The knowledge base of autism is changing almost daily as a result. Early intervention, along with good therapy (not that ABA bullshit, or forcing your child to drink bleach to kill imaginary worms in their digestive tract) goes really far to helping someone become self sufficient and productive. After my son was diagnosed, we learned a lot about how to tailor our parenting and teaching to the autism. The first speech therapist kept trying to force eye contact, and failed to make the progress she hoped for. We changed to a therapist who deals mainly with autistic kids and our son is now very social and talks non-stop. The approach was different, making use of "good" autistic traits without forcing "nuerotypical" expectations on him like sustained eye contact. I fully expect my son to always be different. He'll always deal with sensory overload and he has other, non-autistic health issues, but he's on track to be happy and social. He shows huge empathy for others and their pain. Most people think he's not autistic, because he isn't Sheldon Cooper, but he is. He just isn't going to suffer the same damage I did because of how my parents handled me being "a little differenty". There are high functioning people who struggle with wrong diagnoses and thus do not get to be 'successful' all bc they are mislabelled and mismedicated in ways that don't address the underlying problem (sensory processing) The DSM is a major flop
