Are there any good prose books/novels based on comics? I remember reading the novelization of the Death and Return of Superman when I was a teen and it was extremely my poo poo (though it probably doesn't hold up well nowadays...)

Not based on any specific comics but I remember liking "It's Superman!" by Tom De Haven which is a Superman origin story set in the 30s and "A Once Crowded Sky" by Tom King (before he started writing comic books) which is set in a world that used to have superheroes and worked off of superhero comic logic but everyone has to deal with being normal now. You can tell King was having a lot of fun coming up with his own versions of both DC and Marvel characters. Like a guy who was basically Captain America but was constantly being refrozen and thawed out by the US government every time they had a war to fight.

Wow, this isn't your dad's Teen Titans!

Actually there probably was a gritty Teen Titans run sometime in the 80s or 90s so yes, this is literally your dad's Teen Titans.

That last one is just an alt world Bucky (though I think the book predates Brubaker's Cap run)

The cartoons are probably the only version of Teen Titans that aren't grim dark as gently caress, though this is probably the first time an official DC version of Dick Grayson said gently caress.

Though if we imagine DC characters as real people with lives outside the written canon Dick Grayson has definitely said "gently caress Batman" a couple thousand times, but never to a criminal he was about to beat up.

Weird thought I had. Daredevil: Born Again is better than Batman: Year One, Bendis' Daredevil run is better than Born Again, Batman: Year One is better than Bendis' Daredevil run. I think the problem is I'm comparing two short arcs by one author to a much longer arc by a different one and it's been way longer since I've read Year One compared to the Daredevil stuff. But it really feels like a rock, paper scissors situation.

Been reading a ton of european comics through Izneo's subscription service.

This morning I read one called Les Crocodiles, by Thomas Mathieu. It's related to the Crocodiles Project, which is a tumblr which collects comics that Mathieu drew relating stories of sexual harassment sent to him by female readers. All the men are drawn as crocodiles.

quote:

Crocodiles Project is drawn by Thomas Mathieu, the stories were sent from France and Belgium. The men are replaced by crocodiles as a way to question gender roles, and their implication in sexist harassment.

English translation made by Sophie Heitz, Neill Wade and Emily Macintosh, handwritten by Aurore Vegas and Thomas Mathieu.

The book has the comics, a series of essays related to the subject at hand, and some comics talking about how to handle sexual harassment situations (for both victims and bystanders), drawing from resources like Hollaback and and stopstreetharassment.org.

It's really good. I don't know how women would experience reading it, but as a man I found it pretty engaging. The choice to draw all men as crocodiles puts you in a position to read through the eyes of the female characters, when naturally, even considering the subject matter, you might be inclined to read through the perspectives of the men.

Note that it depicts sexual harassment, sexual violence, and rape. Because of the art style it's not graphic, but it doesn't shy away from depicting the subject matter in an honest fashion.

You can read many (all?) of the comics at the Crocodiles Project, or if you read French it's available on Izneo. I don't believe the book has been released in English.

It's super dumb that DC is still trying to make Katana their headline Asian character, when her power is "has a katana", she's named Katana, and she wears the Japanese flag as a mask. Elevate one of the other asian characters or make a new one, but either way have the main Asian character be defined by something other than "is very Asian"

I'm finally reading the Black Panther tpbs I bought ages ago and after Black Panther 1-4 the first volume ends with some extras, like a map of Wakanda, character designs, and Black Panther's first appearance, as a bonus, in Fantastic Four #52, and it's a spectacular whiplash to go from the placid Coates' issues to this breakneck pacing of the classic comics.

If you haven't done it before I highly recommend going through the original Lee/Kirby Fantastic Four run, it's probably the best long read in comics until either Miller's Daredevil or Claremont's X-Men.

"Is very Japanese", because that's all her traits. She's about as pan-Asian as Captain America is pan-American.

I've been reading this collection of Wally Wood EC stories called "Came the Dawn and Other Stories." It started out with some pretty standard EC horror stuff, nothing too out there but about half way through the book I've hit a deep mine of socially conscious stuff. There are stories about racism, antisemitism, the Klan, police violence and even oddly enough an anti-corruption one about a fire inspector who takes a bribe to look the other way in regards to a nightclub but the place eventually burns to the ground and the inspector kills himself out of guilt (mostly because he thinks his daughter was in the club.)

This is the end of the antisemitism story "HATE!"

The guy getting beat up was previously joining in on the antisemitism but learned from his mother that he was adopted and his dead parents were Jewish.

A lot of the EC stories revolve around core twists of humanity being self-destructive/now we're the monster. The first Fantagraphics EC book is Kurtzmann and a good chunk of those stories are, while not exactly anti-war, lean pretty heavily into "war sucks". IIRC the Korean War is depicted as "this loving sucks", even when US soldiers are doing something heroic or whatever; it's less "we fended off evil" and more "we aren't dead".

Cool, it seems Marvel have made it completely impossible to look up comics on their website now. They used to have a really nice index of characters/series etc which made it easy to look up particular issues. It's either gone, or moved somewhere (maybe under their Unlimited section?) I don't want to read stuff, I just want to be able to access issue synopses, creative teams, release dates etc. :argh:

Also I went to search, the issue in particular I was looking for was New Avengers #26 (from the original 2004-ish volume), and it seemed to return every single comic except for it. The first result when I search for "New Avengers #26" is All-New Wolverine #26.

Comicvine is the best site for this sort of thing, I usually google something like "comic vine <series name> volume" and you'll get a result that's either the volume you want, or that volume will have a hyperlink in its description like "Continues/Continuing in Uncanny X-men vol 3".

Well, again, Marvel's site for the past couple of years had a fantastic interface. I know it's easily Googleable and all this info is available on other websites. I'm just annoyed that Marvel appear to have completely dumped what was a great resource.

I love EC and have almost an entire collection of the 90s reprints. They were very much progressive for the 50s, despite an over reliance on love triangle plots. Really the art is better than the story in most cases but you probably won't be grossly offended except perhaps by gender stereotypes which were no worse than anything else going on at the time.
