I feel like the people who watch this stuff are probably just going to watch it online like they have been.

It sounded a lot to me like the latter, Nolan said she wanted to do a prime time show every night, and that between the east and west time zones 11:30 was a good spot for her, she wasn't saying "I've got O'Toole in my sights" or anything. I assumed she was just talking in hypothetical terms, describing her ideal situation.

The next 18 months or so is going to be really interesting because ESPN seems to be completely hedging on the fact that their brand is greater than any talent, which is certainly true to an extent, but this is the time for the other channels to capitalize in some way. If FOX Sports 1 can't make some noise in the next year and some change, it's never going to.

Well it's not like people are going to stop watching the games based on who the commentators are. As far as the non-game programming, is anybody still watching it anyway? ESPN probably figures that everybody realizes that Sportscenter, the take shows, and all the rest are just useless, dated white noise by this point. They still need them as filler, but under the current market it doesn't make sense to throw more money at them than they have to. They haven't been losing viewers because of the quality of the programming.

DOOP posted:FS1 really should have followed NBC and gobbled up all the niche sports out there They had them and they were gobbled up from them. I can kind of understand where they were they were coming from, NBC seemed to be overpaying for the programming they got for cheap, or sometimes were even paid to carry. It's actually kind of unfair since NBC is basically just trying to get enough content so that their sporting networks get into enough homes so that they aren't begging cable companies to temporarily add them to lower packages like the last two times the Olympics rolled around.

I think ESPN figured out that the live events are all that really matters. Cable companies have to keep you aboard and pay you the huge fees as long as you've got big NFL and NBA games. I know First Take and stuff did well for them but it's not what makes ESPN a necessity in your home.

I don't think NBCSN initially wanted to end up the way they did, but they've ended up doing just fine for what they have. FS1 has too many egos and pride to try a similar strategy.

I really am liking the direction ESPN is going in. They have a ton of really talented people still on air, And are giving a shots to other people they have who have previously just been backups or guests. If they get rid of Stephen A, then I might actually start watching ESPN again.

ESPN is another animal and it's becoming glaringly apparent that their suite of channels are vastly over priced. Enough so that old greyhairs have chosen a skinny cable package that doesn't include the four-letter. THAT is ESPN's current problem... they still get :4bux++: by proxy over the majority but those tides are shifting greatly.

I thought this was interesting, Keith Murphy (Des Moines sports guy) and Katie Nolan had a little exchange on twitter, seen here (click for full): https://twitter.com/katienolan/status/738228793677119488 I've got to say, I really don't agree with Katie at all here. The point that Keith was making is that for Baylor to fire a head coach that successful, the report must have been pretty bad. Because the culture of football is so hosed up that otherwise Briles would still be there. Her point seems to be that you shouldn't even be talking about his coaching record at all when reporting the story. Her clip is here, specifically around the 3:20 mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yj-27FnGskY It's nothing outrageous or anything and they were both civil in their words to each other, it's just frustrating to see her take the opinion of someone I know to be reasonable and respectable and purposely take it out of context. edit: to be clear, I understand that his record is completely meaningless compared to what happened off the field. But it's very notable that Baylor fired him despite his success on the field, and to ignore that in reporting it seems to be missing a part of the story. Nolan Arenado fucked around with this message at 15:19 on Jun 2, 2016 |

He wasn't defending Baylor or Briles. He was simply pointing out a fact in today's world that the more successful you are as a coach, the more poo poo you'll be allowed to get away with. And since Briles has been so successful, the report had to be really bad. Take Tim Beckman at Illinois. There is zero chance he gets fired if Illinois had made a few Rose Bowls under his watch.
