Actually, that makes perfect sense. As was said before, due to inflation, in about 20 years, things will be that much more expensive that your standard of living at $30/hr will be exactly the same as at $11/hr today.

Speaking of which, that's why I really dislike people complaining 'oh, everything's so expensive nowadays!', while ignoring the raises they get and how much more money they're making. It's like people expect everything to just magically get better for them.

e: ^ I'm sure you know this, but a simple 'thanks' actually really makes my day. I mean, I say 'Have a nice evening!' to pretty much every customer, and have done for the past 7 months, and it's a massive surprise whenever someone says 'You too!'.

Yeah, honestly, anybody audibly returning all my silly pleasantries and saying please and thank you is a good customer in my book. Considering how a depressing number of people don't do these things, just doing that much instantly makes you better than the majority of customers.

If "policy" were followed she would've gotten a 6% raise annually and been at some crazy $/hr now. The point I was trying to make is it's hard to explain that to someone who's been a loyal and key part of a housekeeping team for over 12 years. $11.50 is actually really high for a housekeeper and I'm sure the company would rather me find ways to write her up and fire her and hire a new person at minimum wage ($7.25 now?) But interviewing and training sucks so I'll push back against that as hard as I can.

Actually since I took this hotel over employee turnover has plummeted. It's a nice feeling.

It doesn't matter but she is making more than an annual 6% raise would give her. Still not enough for what they go through. That is why I always make sure I leave a tip for housekeeping when I stay at a hotel even though the most they have to do in my room is give me fresh towels.

6% annual raises would have roughly doubled her pay in 12 years. She's actually about a dollar an hour ahead of that if she's making $11.50 now.

Definitely with you on the larger point that it's frustrating to have wages locked into a really narrow range and not be able to reward the good ones, though.

You're free! Time to claim unemployment benefits!

See if there's a program designed to help you go back to school, too. Get an A+ certification if you can - the general consensus in SH/SC is that they're worthless, but they're easy to get, they look good on paper, and they might help you get a job that isn't retail (and would probably pay you far, far more.)

I wasn't exactly expecting people to congratulate me on losing my job over loving out-of-dates, but it is what it is I suppose..

What happened was, whenever I got those write-ups about out-of-dates that I mentioned a while ago, they were saved on the computer, and when the DM came for our visit on Wednesday, he found them and poo poo-canned me. The manager is giving me the option of running for the hills and transferring to the neighboring district, but gently caress that noise..

I called the Container Store back since I haven't had word in weeks (they're *supposed* to call you back within a week), and they're in a "holding pattern" on hiring because a store is opening in the state, but 3 hours away.. doesn't make sense to me. I contacted my "network", so they've got their feelers out for me. Two of my buddies who work in the same place are trying to force out one of their coworkers to get me a spot, but that might be easier said than done. Just applied to HHGregg.. I've done some electronics sales before, so it shouldn't be too much of a stretch for me. My dad has offered to let me work with him- he's a freelance merchandiser for Stanley Hardware, but it would mean a lot of overnights, and I don't know how my fiance will respond to me being out of the house for weeks at a time. All this within an hour and a half.

As far as exercising- I have been. A lot. I've lost almost 30 pounds since March. I hit the gym 4 times a week, but now I guess I can go 7. Bright side, eh?

I'm thinking of calling New Horizons Career Development Center. They're all over the radio in Raleigh, and it might be worth the 3 months to get some certifications. Anyone have any experience with them, or are they local only?

My brother graduates from college this week. He's got a degree in industrial engineering. All I was ever good at in school was writing and history. Why couldn't I have been good at math?

Nice one! You've got a lot going for you. If you get unemployment, there is no reason not to go back for some kind of training. If one of your job offers comes through, and you have a really good feeling about it, then you can just quit your course.

Just remember to relax and be confident in every interaction you have. You're a smart guy with management experience and that will pay off for you but you just don't know when. Just be somebody that everyone will want to work with, and keep it up all the time because you never know when that contact with your next job will meet you.

I'm sorry for making assumptions, but you may have come across as desperate in the past which will lead to good people not picking you for jobs or total dicks picking you because they know they can push you around.

Enjoy sleeping in next week, keep up the good work in the gym, start learning about something interesting and remember how much your friends and fiancee helped you and supported you while you worked for that hosed up oval office of a DM.

You were never going to get another job until you got yourself this horrible - but oh so familiar - retail hell. Getting fired sucks, but would you prefer a few more years... there?

I don't mean this in any sort of offensive way but I can't think of another way to put it: for some reason this job turned you into a massive, pathetic pussy who would rather lose his dignity every hour of every day than dare stand up and fight for himself. I know that's not who you want to be, but that's who you were.

Until now.

Don't waste this opportunity and go crawling back to retail. Find yourself a job you like and don't get into the same old rut if it doesn't work out.

Above all else: take the advice given to you in this loving thread and customize your cover letter and resume. No excuses. You're unemployed and you have the time. Do it.

And don't be one of those heroes who doesn't apply for unemployment.

Nothing easily digestible, or anything I could make a career of. Really only 20-30 page history papers, but I was very good at it. For some reason, I didn't find researching and writing as difficult and off-putting as my peers seemed to. I haven't written anything since 2007, and I don't really have the giant college research library or special collections like I did back at school. My favorite professor was supposedly a nightmare to the average student, but my writing ability really struck him. I never got less than an 'A' on anything I wrote for him, and I must have taken 4 courses with him at the front of the classroom. He read every word, at least of his closest students- and you could tell, because he would comment on nearly everything. He told me at the end of it all how proud of me he was. I'd hate to go back and show him the failure I've become.

You just got rid of a job that literally made you think about killing yourself. This is a very very VERY good thing. Now you have to think back about what the people were like and what the interview was like and make sure you never end up in a place like it again.

You both are worried about the money and your plans but seriously, you'll find a way to deal with the finances and no plan is ever made that doesn't get changed.

I am watching "Extreme Couponing" (it's seriously like watching a trainwreck and I can't look away), and aside from the crazyness of it all, I don't understand why these people have all their items individually rung up, couldn't they just load up one of each item and tell the cashier how many of each? And if I was going to get that many things at once I'd ask if there were any unopened boxes/wrapped shipments in storage.(as they're made for transport and easy organization.) To me, it just seems that they're wasting a shitload of time beyond the time they're spending already.

Coupons aren't that common in Norway, and they're usually electronic (either in form as a text message or an app). And I've never had someone give me more than one at a time.

They probably have to be rung in individually for the coupon to apply; there's usually a 1 per customer/1 per transaction/etc restriction. I'm in Canada and have never in my life seen a coupon in electronic form. How do you text a coupon?

You sign up for a store reward program by texting 'SOMECODE to a number' and you get the occasional text saying "blah blah blah product is 75% off if you show this text at the register"

Whereas this is an example of an app for a specific convenience store:

It has more features than just coupons, and you can send a coupon to a friend as an sms as well.

Generally, the issue is not trusting the cashier. The belief is they will accidentally miscount or purposely type in the wrong number to "help" a friend. Likely the system can handle it and the cashier wasn't taught how or told not to.

I talked to my dad for a while, and if anyone knows the pains of unemployment, it's him. He left a job he'd been working for 25 years as a sales rep for National Hardware (now bought out by Stanley) and worked for a year or two as the sales manager for a builder's supply company. When the bottom fell out on the housing market, he was their scapegoat and he lost his job. Was unemployed for a year or two, burnt out his savings.. In his mid-50's and all he knew was builder supply and hardware, there wasn't a lot for him. He's working for his old company now as a freelance merchandiser. I ran my ideas by him, and after the talk, I'm calling New Horizons on Monday. They say it takes three months to get IT certifications, then I'll go from there. If I get some part-time retail gig in the meantime, fine. My mom has already told me she won't let me lose the house, so her plus unemployment will keep me afloat until I can land something new.

3. Bitch bitch bitch that you bought the RAM there, and that it fried your computer.
