Layoffs again today. So far , five guys got let go, more to come in the second half of the day. What gets me is how unaffected the management/supervisors are by all this. Through 8 rounds, only one has been made redundant. There are five mill supervisors for about 12 machinists. Those five do not run machines themselves anymore either. All chiefs, no indians around here Feels like the sword of Damocles is over me these days.

It's a big WTF thought here when I heard about that. Here only landlords that rent out houses to the poor get concessions (a real "the rich get richer" scheme). Buying your own house here gives you a big gently caress all from the government (try and make a claim - say if you run a business from it or whatever means you have to pay CGT on the value you eventually sell the house for), so no one bothers to get concessions for their home - PPR. We're just happy we aren't taxed extra our house*, and we can't claim home loan interest etc, which you can do in the US I believe. I like how ISPs have gone from the AOL model of pay per minute and take forever to 'load new art' to a wide open model and now regressing back to data caps and paying by the gigabyte while pushing streaming. I guess it's a way to guarantee a fat revenue stream for little extra effort.

Quite A Tool posted:I kind of figured that was a typo regarding the compressor, but in what world does biodegradable wiring make sense?? I think the biodegradable wiring was the result of trying to make the wiring more eco-friendly when it came time to recycle the car at the end of its life. Apparently the GXL/TXL wire (i.e. The Good Stuff) used in most cars is really hard to recycle because of the same qualities (e.g. heat resistance) that make it last for a long time under the hood. I'm not sure what Volvo's alternative was, but the insulation would crumble and fall off after only a few years in service instead of lasting for the life of the car. They ended up having to release replacement harnesses that used more durable wire; it's still possible to find used replacements in good condition if you buy the car and find yourself in need of one. davebarton.com also has brand new replacements. If it's running fine now it should fairly easy to keep it that way but if it has running issues they can be hard to troubleshoot because of the Bosch K-Jet mechanical fuel injection. Most of the rest of the driveline is shared with later Volvos so it shouldn't be too hard to find parts.

The crock of poo poo companies are putting out about ESC is terrible. I have never once seen it save an FF car in an understeer situation, it only stands to make the car understeer worse by applying rear brakes and cutting power to the driven wheels at the worst possible time. It's a fan-loving-tastic way to understeer into the opposing lane on a turn during slippery conditions. It's another system created to make cars more difficult to work on and supporting drivers being loving braindead at the wheel in cars that feel as disconnected from the road as physically possible. What's great is I'm sure insurance companies will be happy to drop you on any liability case if you turn your ESC off. Safety improvements like airbags and proper unibody engineering are great but the amount of needless technology being stuffed into every single car as federally mandated is bullshit. How about a federal mandate that forces people to not drive on lovely all-seasons during the winter?

Just made the mistake of going to the grocery store in uniform. Jesus Christ never again. Saw this super cute blonde girl walk across the center aisle in front of me, like a solid thirty feet. When I go to pass the aisle she went down, she loving springs out in front of me. "Thank you so much for your service to this country sir. I just had to wait and tell you." You could smell the crazy. But drat she was cute. Eight years and I still have no idea how to react to that, so I never go anywhere in uniform unless forced to. On the bright side I did see a dude with downs wearing a superman shirt and cape, while looking like the happiest mother fucker in the world.
