Jim Sterling is apparently under the weather, so he came out with a remaster of a very old, pre-independence episode. It's got a lot of overlay text about the ways in which it is now dated and the ways in which it isn't.

WNUF really disappointed me. Great concept, good execution, super dull scenario when it was all said and done.

That's my biggest problem with Found Footage, they just kind of build up to one thing and that thing is usually so drat underwhelming that you leave going "thats all?"

But I do love the genre despite liking like...barely a few. I tend to be more into the studio ones where they have money to really push the concepts into something big and bold. Like Cloverfield.

To expand: most found footage movies-- especially the ghost/monster hunter ones-- are feature length, but only have two acts.

A three-act movie would go like this:

1) They're looking for fake legend thing
2) But it's real and now they're in poo poo's creek!
3) And they fight back / escape / have a tragic downfall

So many of the Found Footages go like this:

1) They're looking for fake legend thing
2) But it's real-- and that's it. It makes spoopy noises, and the movie ends.

It'd be like if the opening of Raiders of the Lost Arc was half Indy wandering around a cave. Then he finds a statue. Then the next 49% is him walking out of the cave, with creepy noises going off and stuff. Then at the very last second, a rock falls on him and he dies. Except that sequence is 90 minutes long. And ends with something jumping at the camera.

A couple Halloweens ago, me and my wife's "let's watch a bunch of stuff on a theme" was found footage. Even the ones that were well shot, well acted and had some tense moment-- well, they still followed that two-act formula. And it's boring as gently caress.

People go into the woods to look for thing, they die.

People go into a hospital to conduct experiment, and they die.

It all becomes just a "showcase" of camera tricks and makeup effects with no plot payoff.

...

And then you have Trollhunter (2010). Go watch that instead.

Oh neat next Friday really does fall on the 13th.

So like, why didn't they delay the latest game itself until next Friday? Like it'd have gotten a few more months of dev time and fine tuning as well if they had done that.

Yeah I like em overall.

lornekates, I think you could easily view found footage films through a lens that fits this requirement of having three acts:

1. Characters go in search of something fictional and monstrous for fun and find something that could be considered evidence.
2. The characters try to make sense of the evidence and make choices about how to continue.
3. These choices play out, often poorly for at least one character.

In The Last Exorcism for example, the first act is the characters learning about the area and realising the girl might genuinely be possessed. The second act is the characters attempting to solve this and learn more and decide if they're going to try to leave and what they're going to do about it. The third act is the consequences of those choices. If anything I would argue that found footage films have a much more explicit three act structure than normal films, but with a much shorter third act, necessitated by the fact the ending is usually fulfilling the conceit of the rest of the story existing in the first place. The third act of The Last Exorcist is shorter than the first two because it's the least important part, we already know this part was going to happen, and the film was about how they got there.

The opening conceit of a found footage film is generally 'this was found because something bad happened to the characters'. it often literally says words to that effect. It's a foregone conclusion. The real story of these films is why and how they happened, not just in terms of 'a couple goes out in the woods with a camera and then a vampire stabs the boyfriend with a sharpened frozen ham' or something, but in terms of 'this character refused to give up on his search for the Ham Vampires even after having the opportunity to stop, because he was determined to prove his girlfriend was hysterical about a prior experience with them, because he fundamentally doesn't trust her experiences to be valid.' The Ham Vampire Tapes is not a very unique film because I just made it up off the top of my head, but it's a complete story even if you could easily summarise the basic 'plot' like this:

1. They look for the Ham Vampire.
2. They die.

In reality I just made up a film about Gender Politics In Relationships, in which a character refuses to believe the validity of a woman's experience until they're literally being killed by it. I have, in fact, just described a fairly significant portion of the film Paranormal Activity. A man refuses to believe his wife's stories or take appropriate measures and instead sets up cameras to prove she's wrong and fucks about with a ouija board until it shatters their relationship.

A lot of found footage films are about the hubris of disbelief. Blair Witch, The Last Exorcism, Paranormal Activity - characters make bad decisions for their own reasons, and poo poo happens as a result. Found Footage is almost inherently an exercise in character study, in what those choices are and their meaning. Lots of people ask of these films 'why would anyone film this?' - Exactly. Why would they? What does that say about that person? This is storytelling, but in a very different way from straightforward narrative film.

This one has actually been expanded into a full movie but boy does it look baaaaaaad. Maybe I'm just being judgy but the trailer suggested literally the opposite of any promise from the short.

I'd pay to see Gareth Evans expand his short from 2 though.
