Drug testing is weird to me anyways, because all the drugs you'd think they'd be testing for are usually not caught in time to actually test for them before the body gets rid of them, unless it's weed or opiates or benzos. If you're not sober on the job it's pretty obvious, so why even bother with the test? What about legitimate perscriptions?

Weed is evil you know! If you smoke we you probably do that other stuff!

And if you have a prescription you take it with you and show them.

It really doesn't matter if they have a prescription; under federal law, which trumps state law, it is still an illegal substance.

I mean, it doesn't matter to me whether you smoke or shoot. Its just the law. I also know that health insurance providers that insure a company require the drug testing, not the employer itself.

\/ Weed was what I was referring to.

I've had to deal with have a narcotic prescription before. You prove you have it legally (meaning a prescription) and you are fine.

Unless it's weed since the government denies that it might have any valid medical effect.

Our stats tanking might have something to do with the management hiring everyone who can put a headset on within three tries but hey... Not like I warned them about that.
I watched the stats tumble, documented my automated payroll system (which, my successor informs me, isn't being used despite testing and approval by ops and HR lol) and Python tools I'd crafted and ollied out back to academia.

It was wonderful; the IT guy and I shared and office and spent our days fixing things and bitching about management.

I read something similar, basically the CIA, NSA, FBI cant recruit any young tech workers anymore. Between the comparatively mediocre pay, culture, and civil rights issues revealed by Jon Snowden no young tech talent wants to go work for them anymore. So basically they get stuck with the leftovers.

SPOON!
I was randomly drug tested once at my first real IT gig. I was IT for a large mattress chain. Random tests were required because we had a fleet of delivery guys, and insurance required it for anyone who would drive for work. As a business you have to do it for ALL employees to be fair.

We actually lost our 58 year old AS/400 operator/maintainer to a random test...

I think in most cases drug testing is done for the same reason a lot of questionable business processes are: cargo cult mentality. The government and IBM do/did it so clearly it must be a good idea!

The Macaroni

...it does nothing.
My company has annual mandatory online training, i.e. "Everyone has to take the online safety presentations every year." It's essentially a condition of employment, yet every year there are people that are shocked, SHOCKED by the deadlines. We even have a fancy little dashboard that we set up to list what classes you have to take and it's color coded by status: green is complete, yellow means "deadline approaching," red means overdue.

A call came in...

:argh:: Hey, Macaroni! How can we be expected to comply with these requirements when the dashboard provides faulty information? I don't have time for this!
:allears:: I'm sorry for any technical problems that may have occurred. Let's take a look at your dashboard.
:argh:: See? There's a list of 8 classes and I did them all months ago! It's broken!
:allears:: Um, there are indeed 8 classes listed, but they're all green and the dashboard lists the date you completed them. See, there's a whole column for "Date Completed." Great work getting your requirements done early!
:argh:: How am I supposed to know what a green dot means? If I see a list of classes, I assume that means I need to take them! I'm escalating this problem to management.
:allears:: Please feel free to do so.

Fortunately management has already won over the C-level folks with our convenient, easy to read dashboard, so this got shut down quickly.

NO THAT'S NOT ME!!

I had to complete drug screening for saleman works at both Best Buy and Lowes. Lowes, I could understand, due to the forklifts and other power tools. Best Buy, to sell fridges and washers? Not so much. My current job did a thorough background check, thumb print, drug screening, etc., so that they could say that every one of their employees are basically certified non-criminals. There's no other drug screenings past the initial one, but now I'm In The System should my prints ever come up on anything the cops are interested in.

I lasted two months there. It was the worst job I've ever had and converted me from someone who would shop their occasionally to someone who will not ever go there under any circumstances.

STORY TIME: The primary reason that I quit, aside from it being generally soul-crushing work, was the following situation. I worked "Accessory Sales" in the computer department which basically means I was in charge of stocking the aisles and arranging things and answering questions, etc. Your general retail grunt.

Fry's also employs salesmen that work off of commission to sell desktops - sometimes, though, the customers would approach us and we'd help them. Once we they'd made a selection, it was customary for us to hand them off to someone who worked on commission so that they could get said commission. Sales guy would generate a quote that they'd take up to the front to buy their computer, said quote would have their info so they'd get a commission, etc.

The sales manager's station was located right next to the printer where the quotes came out. Apparently the guy I had found to print the quote out was on his shitlist, so the the manager grabbed the quote when it came out, saw that it had no accessories on it, and promptly ripped it up and threw it away. This was of course after the salesman and I had explained to the customer that their quote would come out at that station and directed their attention toward it. They saw this happen, turned and asked us wtf, and for some reason the salesman explained everything in full detail - about how he was supposed to sell them accessories - which made the customers go up the manager, yell at him and make a scene, and storm out.

Manager immediately turns over to us, has us come into the back, and yells at us. For whatever reason he assumes I was the one who told the customer that, and I decide that I really could not give any less of a gently caress about the job so I don't correct him. Afterward the salesman thanks me for not correcting him and saying that he was sure he would've been fired if I had. I tell him I don't care about the job and that I'm giving my two weeks notice (I wanted to collect the last full paycheck following the insanity/overtime pay of Black Friday). I learn shortly after from someone who had worked there a while that it was customary for him to fire & have security escort people giving their two weeks' notices on the spot, so I opted to instead just quit 15 minutes before one of my shifts about two weeks later instead.

Also they just repackage all of their returned stuff and a bunch of guys got fired for stealing like 30 iPods while I worked there. I think three separate people were fired for separate occasions of harassing the one woman who worked in our department, too.

Basically I hope they go out of business but somehow they keep crawling along...

So a ticket came in a few weeks ago. User needed Visio installed on his laptop. I don't have access to the vlsc portal so I get the sa to grab me the key. He emails me 5 keys. They are all kms. I ask him for a mak key as the client doesn't run kms but he tells me they are interchangeable. I try and argue with him but he was having none of that. Fast forward to today when I catch the user not on the road, I install Visio, try the keys and surprise surprise they didn't work. I go back to the sa asking for mak keys as the kms keys didn't work and he loses it on me.

The paging system goes through our phone system. Part of the building isn't getting pages. I believe there is a wiring fault someplace, or that the amp from the 70s needs to be replaced. Nope manager insists it has to be the phone system loving up. Still waiting for support to come out and tell me it's not their problem and give me the bill so I can call someone who can actually fix this.

The phone system puts pages through a single line out port. There is no way this is a configuration issue.

Sometimes you just need to go through the motions. Even when you know it's wrong to appease someone higher up.
