The Mt Pinatubo eruption happened simultaneously with a typhoon and it dumped a ton of wet volcanic mud on people's roofs which collapsed. Pinatubo was also a huge stratovolcanic eruption unlike what Hawaii gets.

USGS interferogram from around 3pm Hawai'ian time indicates the potential rift is pretty drat long The Kilauea summit is deflating as the magma finds a path of lower resistance to go into. The eruptions at the moment are around the star, and you can draw a line from the word East through Rift and then to Zone and see that it's all lifting up along that line. Potential rift is ~35km long, magma will probably find several places along there to vent out of and the other parts will deflate slightly.
