This article is long but extremely interesting from a "manufacturing consent" pov. They interview a bunch of han, Hui, and ughers, many with experience in xinjiang. All of them say there's no genocide and that they actually are just job training centers. This is taken as evidence of the genocide. I really recommend reading it, maybe I'm just reading my own pov into it but it seems like its almost self parody.

quote:

“I know some Uyghurs came to learn from Kashgar. Some of them could not even speak a single sentence of Mandarin before, but after studying for a period of time, some were able to find a good job… If this is very good for them, and they are willing, how can it be called a concentration camp?” he asked. (It’s worth noting in this context that many of those who have spent time in these facilities say they were commanded to speak often of their gratitude to the CCP – and even to look happy at all times.)

this bit intrigued me

quote:

“If Xinjiang really becomes North Korea, and random massacres and crimes [are] really flourishing,” the West would not need to speak up, Mu, the Beijing-based journalist, said. “Chinese and Han nationality people like me will rise up against the CCP.”

because i have absolutely no idea what hes talking about in regards to random massacres and crimes in north korea which suggests to me that either educated chinese people have access to different anti north korean propaganda than we do or that this guy is used enough to western propaganda that hes just engaging in the usual standby habit of using north korea as a specific placeholder to mean a platonic bad country that commits random vague crimes

That would be kind of neat to learn, but I think North Korea is just a "there be dragons" area on the map in general. It's not all that easier to access for a Chinese citizen than a westerner, is it?

It's definitely not. Chinese people aren't inundated with the kind of anti-DPRK propaganda that gets filtered to the West through South Korean tabloids, but from the Chinese side the DPRK still looks like a cloistered state of weirdos.

I thought this question was pretty interesting, so I asked my (late 20s beijinger) wife. The question was what do you think of north korea?

She said "they're poor, most people dont get enough nutrition. They're like china 50 years ago."

What do you think about their government?

"The government controls them, they dont have internet. They can't learn about the world"

Compared to China's govt

"They're like china if china didn't become capitalist. people are happy because they don't know anything"

sample size of one, so prob not super informative.

When the older Kim was in charge, relationship with China was decent and Chinese can take group tour to NK. There was casino just like Cambodia/Myanmar/Laos(?) that has Casino's just for the Chinese tourists.

Chinese used to go to NK to get reminded of what China was like in the 70s and 80s. Kind of like what Cuba was a few years ago.

Yeah I don't know what "random massacre in NK" that guy was referring to. I will chalk it up for fake news.

its interesting to me how the few foreigners who can talk to north koreans are always surprised both at how curious they are about the world and how much they already know this trope is pretty consistent across north korean narratives whether the person in question is tankie state department spook or just random businessperson whos doing business there

i think the not having internet thing really throws people off because its easy to forget that life used to exist before the internet and they werent exactly dark ages where foreign lands were unfathomable mysteries

Lol, it's pretty interesting. I asked my wife and she says she's never seen any north koreans. I actually have. In 2015, my first year in china, in Wuhan (lol) I was doing the health check they force you to do when you get here. two guys in front of me were north koreans. I could tell because I read their forms and also they were wearing pins with the leaders face on it. Also in Wuhan, some of the museums had like, a north korean shop where you could buy stuff and support the regime. Havent seen any of those since I came to bj though. Now the only way to see them is at those overpriced govt restaurants. We both feel like seeing one is like seeing a mystical creature or alien because they're so rare to see outside their country. I do feel as though relations have dipped since 2015.

Given how China's zero-food-waste program was characterized as "China is meddling in how people choose to eat", I can only assume that increasing the child limit to three will mean Newsweek is going to run a story about how the police will arrest Chinese people who don't gently caress

Once again this is exactly the same as every other conversation about Xinjiang.

First it starts as "Genocide, Genocide Genocide"

But then oh wait, actually no it's not really genocide and it's way more complicated than that.

Always the same poo poo, always.
