The old old salamander chaplain upgrade from crozy to thunderhammer was the best. This loving mess is pointless because that fist would be too hard to remove from the model to give it something not redundant.

What is Tactical Strike?

Short version here: http://adepticon.org/wpfiles/2015/HorusHeresyTacticalStrike.pdf

The long version was created by Forge World in Horus Heresy Volume III to represent traitor warbands hunting down scattered survivors of Istvaan III and V. It can be adapted easily to 40k, although since in 30k it's expected that everyone is working from the same book, it will be easier to exploit in 40k.

You build and play your force model by model instead of squad by squad. Models work independently (like in Kill Team) but can freely group up to receive certain benefits. Each player has 150 points of Hero and Leader characters, supported by 200-400 points of Rank & File. There is a persistent resource management system for campaigns, and this forces players to choose between, say, stockpiling ammunition or maintaining complicated power armor or just putting ragged boots on the ground. It's a lot of fun, although I've only played a couple times and only with proxies since my Sons of Horus are still getting off the ground.

My characters are a Legion Champion and a Breacher Squad Sergeant, and then my Rank & File are a Contemptor Dreadnaught and a pile of Breachers and Reavers.

The short story compilations are also good in general.

The Angels ones are just kind of...bland. Damnation of Pythos is bad. I don't know who the hell David Annandale is, but I didn't like Death of Antagonis either, and the guy has to step up his writing game. The writing itself is just...bleh. I couldn't finish Death of Antagonis because it pained me to read his writing. It's the only 40k book I've ever tried to return, and the only reason I still have it is because Amazon told me to keep it for some reason.

Don't forget Scars by Chris Wraight. He's a newer author, but he's pretty drat good.

My local club has a tournament coming up during the summer, and I'm tempted to have a go with my Nids. One caveat however... I don't own (or want to own) many FMCs. My collection has only a single Flyrant, and I have no desire to buy / paint any Crones or Harpies. This rules out Skyblight and similar competitive lists. There's also a score for painting, so it helps to use as much of my existing collection as possible to save painting a whole new army up.
I'm looking for suggestions how to build a strong list without using the usual Tyranid crutches of Skyblight and Flyrant spam.

The army list rules are pretty straightforward:
  • Any current GW publication is allowed (including IA4v2), except for Horus Heresy books
  • 1500pt list
  • Max 3 detachments
  • Come the Apocalypse allies not allowed
  • 1 Flyer/FMC can be upgraded to a Fighter Ace for 35pts

Despite the lack of flyers my Tyranid collection is pretty substantial, so I could include pretty much anything else. I'm mainly just looking for a general strategy / theme here, rather than a finalised armylist. What approach could I take that could be competitive?

Those are two entirely separate molds, one has a bare head and the other has a helmet. There were other tiny tweaks to each model, but GW is so incompetent they did this instead of, you know, having an empty socket for heads.

They're Death Cult Assassin models. Nothing like Officio assassins but still really darn good. In the ][nquisitor game there was a pair of models that had some backstory about them being sisters (and, naturally, were in leather catsuits and corsets because that's practical).

I'm not denying its a cool model, but it seems like every time they do a new character, marines especially, I can pick out the parts from previously released models. He's even got the same shape cloak that the Chaos Lord has from Dark Vengeance too. If GW are supposedly targetting the modellers and painters, they shouldn't be doing that by making their character models look generic.
