"My word...My word! Could these be the genuine implements of a T'lan high priest?!" You are suddenly tossed overboard into a roiling maelstrom of words as Dr. Weber begins expounding joyfully about the relics' potential significance, and sundry modern theories thereupon. You occasionally surface long enough to catch "the angle of the carven spikes indicates that" or "the decidedly apocryphal god, Kelkagorohorovac The Soul Killer" before the professor's breathless enthusiasm drags you back under. Each of the relics shines with gold as he carefully turns them about in the light.

"The best-preserved T'lan sites generally have magical significance: their ritual ziggurats. Each one that we know of was carefully sited upon intersections of Materis' thaumic ley lines, and attuned to one of the elemental planes, such as the ziggurat of Apet in our very own High Bayou."

Dr. Weber pauses for a moment, and his face clouds over.

Cha is so focused on trying to sound like she could ever have anything that resembles bedside manor that she doesn't even try to remember anything about Lord Ghotier's Arms. Wembley Hall hosts modest accommodations for Pardwright faculty, staff, and visiting lecturers. The receptionist shows slight trepidation when you mention Dr. Meredith's name, but shows you right in.

A young human woman answers your knock at the door to Apartment 12. Her skin looks rather wan, but her disposition is cheerful. "Good morning to you...Constables, I see. Xambria Meredith. There is an overwhelming Apet presence in this room, strong enough to give Haldain a splitting headache.

"Well, we've been digging out the ziggurat since this Spring, clearing passages and a few mechanical traps. It's been an incredible find, but Caius told us to watch out specially for a 'seal'--a huge disc of gold in the heart of the temple, he said, that would be covered with astronomical symbols and magical wards. We managed to open the central chamber in the first week of Summer, and sure enough: big gold disc, just like he said. I reported to Caius and a few days later he sent five specialists by train: three tiefling mages, two human...spymasters? Assassins? Something sneaky and off-putting, anyway."

"They'd been down in the central chamber for a day or so when it happened. I was up on the surface, so I cͭ̿̄̇͐̀o͑͋͌ͦ͌ͨ̀ul̍͋̊ͤ̚d͛n̄̃̒̎̅'͂ͮ͐ͭt̾͛́̊̈͌ ̈́́̅̊̃̄t̷̎ͦ̇͌́ͨe̓ͥ̅̈̈̃͟l̴̒̑͌ͮlͣ̉ͥ͂͏ ͮ͗̌̈́̌̚͜y̴ͩ̌̔̆̒oͤ͑ͩ̓͐́u̿͑̈̈ͥ ̢eͫ́x̴ͧͦ̃ͣ͊͊ͣà̾̿c̶͑ͥ͊̈͊̈̚tͯ̇lͫͧy̷ͨ̾̔ͭ ̛̂̂͊̏ͮw̛̑̅͂ͨͦ̌ͥh͆ͮͬ̒͂́á̽ͫ͗̂͒t̋, but there was this...awful howl, echoing inside my head. Everything went blue, and I passed out. I don't know how long I was under, but when I came to...everyone else I could see had been killed. I didn't dare check inside the ziggurat. I just ran, ran all the way back to Bole. I called the Watch, boarded the first train back to Flint...and here I am and here I've been."

"I tried to get in touch with Caius, but the contacts he gave me were all dead ends. I think he must have known there was danger in the ziggurat. He must have."
