Always sort your discogs collection by median value. Highest value and lowest values are generally meaningless.

Median won't be the true value either, but it will be pretty accurate for ranking what's actually the most valuable.

oingo boingo is a weird band because they put our some incredible bangers in the 80s and I'd absolutely pick up Dead Man's Party if I saw it at a store but that first album is a loving nightmare

via Wikipedia

quote:

Elfman claimed that many of the songs were inspired by newspaper articles he had read at the time and were "written as in-your-face facetious jabs."[2] "Little Girls" courted controversy for its theme of underage relationships. The video for the song, directed by his brother Richard Elfman, was purportedly banned in Canada.[3] The music video features Elfman dancing inside a surreal, empty suburban house, joined by dwarfs and teenage girls. The band members are later seen staring complacently in shop windows and drinking tea while Elfman's character walks down a street with an apparently underage girl.

At the time of release, Elfman described the song as being "about a character who has certain unacceptable inclinations"[3] and later commented, "Out here in Hollywood, you see so much of that; the older guy's in the car with some young girl who essentially asks no questions."[4]

The most explicitly political track, "Capitalism," takes aim at "middle class socialist brat" protestors who "whine about the revolution" whilst themselves appearing to live in comfort. Similarly, "Perfect System" satirizes a leftist utopia where society is manipulated to achieve happiness through "uniformity" and "continuity."[5]

Discussing the songs' themes, Elfman commented that the intention was "to be angry and keep a sense of humour at the same time", explaining "the songs themselves may not be delivered real seriously, but there is a point which I intend not to be taken lightly" and that people should not "be forced to believe" any social or political agenda.[6] In 2014, Elfman reflected that the album was "basically (making) fun of everybody, and didn’t see anybody as being protected". He elaborated: "To me, all organized political groups have a sense of absurdity to them. It’s open to be mocked or satirized. If anything, I consider myself part of nothing, and any organized group was fair game to mockery, from my vantage point."[2]

I'm an '80s SoCal baby and am fully on board with Boingo (I actually just got roped into going to one of the Elfmanless reunion shows in Salt Lake City in December). Also probably the reason why 80% of the music I listen to involves marimba.

Even highest can be good for finding the most valuable, and for insurance appraisal purposes highest or median is what I would use, I guess my point was that if I was trying to turn my collection into cash, I’m going with lowest value. I have probably 1000 records on discogs and only a few hundred that I could sell easily. I’d spend the rest of my life trying to move some of that stuff individually. It’s all the crap i have that might have a median value of $5 that distorts the real value. I have hundreds of classical LPs in good condition that nobody wants or is buying outside of a select few, but discogs puts a value to each one of them.

I had an appointment this afternoon after I posted the muzak #fail.

I passed a barn sale and had 5 minutes to spare and stopped in. I saw a stack of records with Bing Crosby on top and flipped through.

I saw the Tron soundtrack and asked the lady how much for the records. She said a buck a piece. I said how about 50 cents each if I take them all. She said she was firm at a buck but there was another box I hadn't seen under a table.

I flipped though and ended up only finding 32 that were not standard thrift store fodder.

Some are relatively new releases or small indie releases. Was pressed for time and didn't get a chance to check discogs until after my appointment but based on the tron record alone I did ok.

Made a box flip video.

The Limited set (with the shiny foil) combines the other two sets giving you the analog LPs on 180g (the other two sets are 140) and the remasters on CD, plus the poster. It's probably the keeper if you're just holding on to one.

Totally dug No Fences and really enjoying how laid back The Chase is. Can't speak for the remasters (yet :getin:), but the analog-sourced records sound quite pretty.

Vinyl is the cool gift everyone is collecting this holiday season. You can find most of the cool people there. With vinyl you can just chill and do whatever and totally relax. "Take it easy" is the vinyl collectors' motto, for example, that's how laid back it is there. Listen to vinyl if you want to have a good time. Another good reason to listen to vinyl is if you want to hang out with friends.

By outer sleeves do you mean bags? I think any of those are fine. Whatever’s cheap or handy. For inners some people swear by MOFI, and they’re great. I have no problem with the knockoff MOFI sleeves you can sometimes find at Walmart or the paper sleeves with poly linings. Those last ones are especially good if you don’t like the way mofi inners fit in your sleeves. I don’t have that problem because I keep my record outside the outer sleeve because I’m a moron.

Mofi inners or ones like them have already been mentioned but I want to suggest these for outers:

https://www.bagsunlimited.com/product/4186/12-record-jacket-sleeve-font-colorredno-flapfontbr12-34-x-12-34-x-b3-mil-bpolyethylene

The reason I like them is because they will easily accommodate double LP and can even fit a triple LP in them. Many will not. Also avoid those crinkly very clear ones because they rip constantly. You can find them cheaper than what they're listed there.

I think that’s the only kind I’ve ever seen or bought. For 12” at least. I think I have a different brand for 7”.

I still like my 5Mill sleeve city ones and generic bags unlimited floppies for generic sleeve records. Mofi-style inners for 12inch records. Haven’t tried making the change to my 10” and 7” inch records to a rice paper sleeve but they are in those diskeepers which I think if you don’t want to wait for mofis or spend that much on sleeves diskeepers 2.0 are great and reliable. If they’re in stock.

You can get them on eBay. I would also check your local record store cause they might have them in stock.

Otherwise I wouldn’t really hesitate to buy another brand. They’re all pretty much the same.

They're currently out of stock at Amazon but Invest In Vinyl rice paper sleeves are comparable to MoFi's and typically several bucks cheaper which might explain why they're sold out. But keep an eye out for when they restock! I last bought a pack a couple of months ago.

I bought a combo 50 inner/50 outer pack of Invest in Vinyl last week and they’ve worked really well. I only have a dozen LPs or so and couldn’t see spending the extra money buying them in batches of 100 separately.
