Man has walked on the moon, and sent probes out of the solar system. Been to the bottom of the ocean, near enough. We've cured polio, eradicated smallpox. Built the Parthenon and the Pyramids. We're connected 24/7, on a device that fits in a pocket. Amy Adams exists. So we were kind of justified in thinking we were doing pretty well. But with this cartoon newspaper headline, we've actually reached the peak, the apotheosis of mankind. So just loving wrap it up, humanityailures, we're done here.

OK I went a long time without a smartphone and I have a GPS and a "real" camera. Neither is as good as what I have on my phone. The GPS is out-of-date and I have to pay to update it. I still use it on long trips because of phone battery stuff, but away from my car it does me no good. The camera I have, admittedly, is old, but honestly I don't want to carry around a big camera for a few snapshots of places I visit. I'm not a photographer. The mp3 thing maybe he has a point, but I'm not an audiophile either, and I don't use mono bluetooth speakers.

I kind of look at it as "here's evidence of $100k that was spent on Facebook ads, what else were they doing?" Because the investigation has shown that it's been more than just 1 approach. Also, I'm not sure how much "screen time" 100k gets you on Facebook as opposed to millions on ads for TV.

Is this a narrative you've heard a lot of? Most people I'm aware of, including Hillary Clinton, are saying that Russia is one of many reasons why we lost the election. But given how close it was, if any one of those reasons had been different it might have been enough to tip the result. There's also the question of "does Trump owe them anything in exchange for their help?"

There's also the question of "does Trump owe them anything in exchange for their help?" For a while there was a sufficient level of hysteria around Russia that people got mad at politicians for trying to talk about healthcare instead sometimes (while the GOP was actively trying to repeal the ACA). I distinctly remember arguing with people about that ITT and being accused of being pro-Russian-interference. And yeah Bennett has been doing a whole lot of Russia toons all year

Jurgan posted:I'd always just assumed "comrade" was Russian for "friend." Is that not right? Comrade is just the translation of the actual Russian word. Revolutions like to police language, under the assumption that the way you talk influences the way you think. Having everyone be a "comrade" would help usher the perfect equality of communism. For an older historical example of the same kind of thing, revolutionary France insisted on everyone being called "citizen" to break away with the feudal system of the monarchy where people where subjects, lords, or lieges. Using "sir" or "mister" back then was a good way to get yourself in jail or worse. This lexical fervor faded away in time and now nobody would use "citizen" to address someone, and likewise I doubt many people in Russia are still using calling people "comrade" but it's still ingrained in living memory so cartoonists still see it as a convenient shorthand for Russianness.

So here's something this made me ponder: just how ignorant is the Republican party/your everyday R voter? Hear me out because it's not just a simple burn disguised as a question. They seem really good, and I mean REALLY good at taking an actual message or idea and missing just a small enough detail to make it seem crazy and outlandish. This cartoon being a prime example. See, I haven't heard a single person (aside from Republicans) claim that "hurricanes existing is proof of climate change." I believe the leading argument is actually that numerous large or record breaking hurricanes might be a result of climate change. So Republicans take that narrative and just slightly tweak it so that you're some crazy liberal loon for believing in climate change. They did the same poo poo with BLM. The (intentional?) failure to grasp the implied "too". No one was going around saying ONLY black lives matter, except guess who. Same could be said for socialism too. Wanting to implement some facets of socialism to benefit society turns into "the left just wants everyone to be paid the same for doing no work at all." Gun rights, you betcha. The reality is that most people leftists just want more strict regulations. The right's interpretation that they push 24/7: "Democrats want to confiscate all guns." I guess it's probably a combination of the two and there's probably even a term for this strategy, but are they actually incapable of comprehending their opponent's message or are they just being assholes?
