Sounds like a poorly thought out ability, the bonuses are also better for larger units that tend to be less elite.

"The best money can buy" refers to the gear of the army I think. Tilea tends to run big units of Pikemen backed up by missile units as their main line, with middling armor and low AP being their biggest flaws, so it actually is a pretty substantial boon for them.

And yeah, the idea behind Free Rein is that you park that rear end in a top hat and his stack on an enemy province and kick in raiding stance to be a gigantic rear end in a top hat as you both take out even more money and ruin their public order.

The Merchant Prices in general seem built as a kind of buff/debuff-centered choice of army general.

I have really enjoyed them so far. I like that a lot of the skills have a big positive and small negative that you can use against your enemy.

The idea of border princes being useless bros that come in, drink everything, leave you will a bill and upset people is pretty good.

I also like the limit of certain units based on buildings and territory, like dwarf mercenaries. The modder did the same thing with dwarves since some units are just straight upgrades.

I tried out the norse dwarves as well, and having a unit go berserk so I lost control of it was pretty neat.

edit: also lol at this being one of the border princes LL

That reminds me that I last recall berserking as a mechanic in Rome 1, though I've skipped a few titles since. Do any vanilla Warhammer units get that? Minotaurs maybe?

How hard would it be to mod something like that in? Purely as WSAD movement with buttons for "sweeping attack animation" and such, no mouselook.

Not in Warhammer 1 but a lot of Lizardmen units are going to have a rampage mechanic that will activate when they drop below certain health levels.

they are adding new units to the lizardmen roster, in the form of Dinosaurs Who Don't Have Riders, on the grounds "this roster does not have enough rampaging dinosaurs in it. we must correct this."

whose gimmick is that as soon as they're so much as scratched they are going to go to town with excited and reckless abandon

Have you guys checked out the GCCM Rivers update? Having river maps used for battles near actual rivers is neat, and a tactical consideration for empire or dwarves who can use the crossings as choke points.

I've noticed that some zonesjust have much better ambient conditions than others, but also that spell or flame effects change things up big time. The ease of getting a good shot varies from map to map.

Like in that first shot, it was literally the only viewable thing from the whole battle. I don't know what it is, but most Empire siege maps have hideous lighting if you are anywhere near any of the walls. Every other possible shot from that fight looked abysmal. "Isabella casts a spell" basically made a whole new world of light and magic for about six seconds, which was the only time in the whole fight that a decent shot could be taken.

Vampire maps seem to have the best ambiance for shots. The Badlands and Bretonnian areas are usually pretty good too. Snow maps on the other hand, are completely cursed and you will never get anything to look good no matter what spells, effects, or other light sources are present.

Are dark elves chaos aligned? I wonder how this works for chaos in the combined map. Like diplomacy is fairly limited if you are chaos in tww1 but would options open up with these new factions?

Sorta, but no.

DElves feel they can control Chaos, and occasionally work with them for this reason. Because they assume they are the dominant in the relationship. They never are.

Skaven have a higher history of working directly with Chaos.

Both would be factions Chaos should actually have Diplomacy with, because both are factions Archaon could probably bring under his banner with the right incentives. Greenskins aren't amicable to Diplomacy at all ( even amongst themselves. I think it'd have been a lot funnier if they just didn't even have the Diplomacy window, but I suppose they need it for Confederations. ).

Greenskins have diplomacy! Their diplomacy generally boils down to "give me what I want and do what I say or I'll kill you, unless you're bigger/stronger than me, in which case I'll give you what you want/do what you say", which is actually totally in line with normal Total War diplomacy.

Speaking of orcs: man, I thought Dwarfs were supposed to be the easy faction. I've been restarting the campaign 6-7 times and only now made it past turn 30.

Is there a recommended strat for early game Dwarfs on Very Hard/Legendary, or is my survival basically up to the graces of Grimgor and whether he goes north right away, or fucks around in the Badlands or further south?

Sort of/depends on the writer. They're definitely inclined more towards chaos, and their hedonistic lifestyle feeds into that, but chaos is always subversive while the dark elves seek total control and domination over everything else, including chaos. Officially they're enemies, and in end times a massive marauder horde pours south and forces the dark elves to flee Naggaroth. Generally the only times they ally is when a group of dark elves are arrogant enough to think that they can control chaos, usually with mixed results. Unless it's Warhammer: Age of Reckoning, then they just fully ally with chaos and greenskins to make team super evil

Makes for an interesting comparison with the Dark Eldar in 40k, who similarly engage in slavery and torture orgies but would never dare travel by warp, let alone attempt to use Chaos for their own ends.
