Both the Wii and Wii U have power adapters like that but the DS and 3DS have ones with larger plugs. I assume this is a Nintendo internal design thing. I'm just gonna get a generic USB C cord off of amazon for cheap and use that to charge it through a laptop/power supply anyway, personally. That's what I did with the Wii U gamepad and it worked pretty well so far.

If it uses USB PD, you could use any good USB C PD charger and not worry about it.

I'm guessing opting for a brick on the end instead of the middle is primarily a safety thing. They assume the charger would be moved and oocasionally damaged by its users, and the design intent was to minimize the chance of coming into contact with A/C after a fray
