Yeah in the days of steaming the billboard charts have been adjusted so steaming counts slightly towards a bands rank but CDs are still given much more weight.

A friend of mine is in an indie band that built their own studio, records/masters their own albums, pays to have their cds pressed and does all of their merch themselves.

Their end cost on a professionally stamped cd in a printed cardboard sleeve rather than a traditional Jewel case is ~$1. At one point they ran a campaign where they gave their cds away for free + $5 shipping and handling.

They package and mail them out media mail themselves so they were still able profit $3 a free cd and it was successful enough that they ended up on a bunch of billboard charts which for an indie band is exposure that is hard to pull off.

They're fiddling around with the listing, but the reissue of Oingo Boingo's Good for Your Soul should be getting reposted on Rubellan Remasters if anyone wanted to track down a copy, there were only about 200 left of each variant when I looked this morning.

EDIT: it's back up now!

I've had really good luck with Discogs until this week, when the last three records I got (from three different sellers) were all completely unlistenable due to extreme surface noise. All three were rated VG+ and look great until you check under bright light and see tons of almost unnoticeable scratches. I know the pressings are good because the reviews all mention how great they sound. I guess a lot of sellers just only visually inspect their records and don't actually listen. Bummer - repackaging and shipping stuff back is such a time sink.

A lot of discogs sellers are also terrible at visual grading or probably just lie. It's what's put me off discogs.

Oh, what a bummer. All three of my shipments (two from the same seller) so far have been fine, maybe the trick is to find a seller you like/trust and stick with them if possible?

Discogs round 4 is arriving today, with:
- Foxy Lady by Cher
- Yesterday's Dreams by Four Tops
- Tough Guys soundtrack by Issac Hayes (contains Run Fay Run from the Kill Bill soundtrack, as well as Hung Up on my Baby, which was famously sampled in Mind Playing Tricks on Me by Geto Boys)
- A Visit to Washington with Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson

The last one is some 1965 audio tour of the White House narrated by Lady Bird Johnson. I love creepy old poo poo, and it was only a few bucks so I threw it on the pile.

It might or it might not. A simple surface clean probably won’t get rid of the issue, a water vacuum is your best bet. Something that can get in the grooves has the better chance of helping an issue. If it’s just a surface clean you’re just brushing off the top and leaving stuff in the grooves but maybe that’s as far as the issue goes.

Yeah, I've found it a few times and passed it up, because I remember how bad it actually was. I'm more of a Dr. Demento kinda guy myself. I can direct you to a store that has it though. In fact, if any of you want to come record shopping with me out here, let me know. It's no big secret but I know a couple junk stores that you guys might go wild for. You just have to wade through the owner and their buddies talking about how it's their right as a free American citizen to not wear a mask if they want and it's all a democratic plot to take over the United States. I probably shouldn't have included that if I actually wanted anybody to come along LOL.

Since the OP is a good 10 years old, I'm looking for advice.

My roommate inherited a modern Shimo branded turn table from Europe with basically all in one, memory cards and all, looks cheap IMHO. Since it's not dual voltage, I'm trying to figure out if I should look into buying a power converter for it, or if I should just look to source something here in the US.

I do think that we were both hoping it would be a vintage table, when it was on the list of the shipment.

On the other side we do now have a decent sized vinyl collection, unfortunately half of it doesn't appear to have been stored very well (that half was shipped in a clothes basket).

E: And yeah, I'm team "buy something else." Like don't even waste the space using this as a digital media player. If you're looking for ease: Uturn orbit, AT-LP60 or 120, maybe one of the cheaper Fluance or Pro-jects (I don't keep up with these last two, so they may have issues I'm not remembering). If you're willing to hunt, check out local listings for vintage stuff and throw any candidates in here or the turntable/two-channel thread for opinions. There was also recent discussion in one of these threads about good starter setup speakers if you need those.

I can just barely remember MDC from way back when, they weren't really on my radar. But I'll ask the extremely grumpy guy with the motorcycle cop glasses and the punisher shirt, I'm right on it. No, a few weeks ago they got a bunch of really classy 70s-80s stuff, ELO, Boston, Steely Dan, even had a Gentle Giant with some really fancy artwork, all priced at $5-11. I blew it all off.
