That guy not only played football and baseball at UCLA, he played in the Rose Bowl and was on the same baseball team as Jackie Robinson. Then he enlisted, volunteered for the paratroops, won a Silver Star for a small-unit raid on a German artillery emplacement that became a textbook example used in teaching others how to do the same thing, was wounded in battle, turned down an offer to play pro baseball after the war, became a cop, got married, adopted two kids, attended law school at night, became a lawyer, became a district attorney, was the DA who prosecuted Sirhan Sirhan, was appointed to the California court of appeals where he served 20 years before retiring, and later died at home at the age of 90 surrounded by family. No schadenfreude either, unless it's that none of us is likely to come close to a life that awesome.

Well there it is. The dumbest loving thing I'll read all month. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2017/03/06/u-california-berkeley-delete-publicly-available-educational-content Tl;dr: Berkeley has 20k+ free videos online, lectures and course content, got some complaints from blind people that they were poorly accessible for them, in response Berkeley are going to delete them all. Complaints were not from Berkeley students or staff, just some members of the public.

They're just removing them from public access (log in required), not nuking them off the face of the earth. I suppose it's much, much cheaper than redoing them all to comply with the DoJ order.

We had a meeting last week about maintaining our WCAG 2.0 declaration of compliance and we decided the easiest way was to break the accessibility in other parts of our application to retain consistency and remove parts which could not be made compliant. I've done some freelance captioning through http://crowdsurfwork.com/ and university professors are a bunch of mush mouthed mumblers with weird accents. Plus university lectures tend to have a bunch of specialized jargon you have to google if you aren't familiar with the subject. Automated captioning doesn't work well unless people speak very clearly. Making it accessible for the visually impaired with descriptive video is another whole thing. That's basically impossible to automate.

The Truman administration didn't have any more nukes to drop, so if Japan refused to surrender and the Soviets invaded Japan, Washington would have been caught in a bluff. The idea was to make both of them think we could keep doing that every few days for a while. Saying the US won the battle of the Pacific "by the skin of their teeth" is a bit of a stretch, maybe. After Midway, Japan had basically lost and was treading water at every point afterward. I guess before that it was pretty ugly for the US and things could have gone differently. It's not like the US blew out Japan in 1942.

The idea was to make both of them think we could keep doing that every few days for a while. The US had a third bomb set for production after Nagasaki. They didn't have one immediately to drop a few days later, but they were working on another Fat Man for assembly around August 20th. Production was slow because scientists were still figuring out the kinks in the process, but a third bombing in 1945 was absolutely within their grasp and theoretically they could have continued dropping bombs every few weeks. I know that's technically not "every few days", but I've heard that claim a lot and the wording usually implies that America had basically made two devices that were so rare and expensive that they'd be forced to bluff after using them, like the heroes in a space opera getting a superweapon to defeat the evil empire.

The US was on the ropes for basically a few months, but after that, Japan had little to no chance of winning. The USA's production could just overwhelm them, regardless of what Imperial Japan did.

Once he stands up, something bad is about to happen to you.

If you want a more detailed explanation, head over to A/T for the military history thread.
