Every species can smell its own extinction.
There was a french song about 9/11 that basically made a comparison between someone dying in the towers and a little afghan girl getting bombed to death.

I caught The Specialist on telly the other night and have been on a pre-Matrix 90s action movie kick since then.

I was about half an hour into Clear and Present Danger when I saw that tweet about the new Jack Ryan show. Had to turn it off, Prime Harrison Ford or no.

The Specialist loving bangs though, especially the start where Sylvester Stallone somehow loses a stand up fight to James Woods.

In the film Action Jackson, Carl Weathers fistfights the villain Craig T. Nelson, and it's treated like a serious threat.

The 90s was a particularly horrible era for action movies; why would you do that? Even John Carpenter magically forgot how to use a camera because it was the 90s.

It's not quite ironic appreciation but there's a sort of corny professionalism to 90s action movies that came out before The Matrix changed everything. Cliffhanger might be the best example of what I mean. The genre had become pretty tired but there's something about that I like. It's a very specific niche.

Action Jackson is closer to the wacky excess of 80s action, but it is great.

Clearing up a lil Clancy lore for the thread

Sum of all fears was Palestinians nuking the super bowl. Debt of honor was a Japanese 737 kamikaze into the Capitol building in the final pages, and Executive Orders was Ryan becoming president after the attack

These were such a slog, but I enjoyed the hell out of his early books Red Storm Rising and Cardinal and the Kremlin when I was 14

yeah i read it back when the game came out. other than it being stupidly long the only thing i remember is the terrorists execute a girl in a wheelchair so the team's sniper (it might have been ding chavez himself) shot the terrorist in the stomach so he'd suffer as he died.

I never played much Chaos Theory, so I got it on Steam and have just interrogated the first guard and dropped his body in a hole. Game still slaps.

Edit: plugged the next guy with the ol' SC pistol headshot. Man, Sam Fisher owns; why didn't he ever get to be president?

When I was young, way too young to really be allowed to read those books, I legit thought that was badass af. I hate that I ever thought that.

I do stand by enjoying most of his older stuff though, but once the 90's hit his brain broke and he put out Sum of All Fears. And then 9/11 broke it further. I do find it kinda hilarious though that some of the stuff in his older books almost got him torn apart by contemporaries for being 'too left wing' though.

That movie has been in development hell for more than a decade now. At one point John Singleton was attached I think. It's in the same place as the Splinter Cell movie that was rumored to be coming for years but never got off the ground.
