anyway, that requires very good knifework, and I really cant do that because of the fingat. I will have to break out the bloodthirsty mandolin. gently caress, I think my wife may want me dead. At least I can use the hand guard for this vegetable.

yeah, that looks great. not gonna lie. I still havent tried it because I havent wanted to "waste" oil on a batch of burgers in cast iron and havent thought to try it near the end of life of my fryer grease the twice a year I break out the deep fryer.

the onion burgs turned out fantastic. half a vidalia per double pattied burger (still roughly 4 oz worth of meat all told) served on an onion bagel

possibly, but she responded "haha nope totally forgot" when I questioned her motives.

personally, I had been holding it vertically to cut uniform carrot rounds for soup. It was maybe my third carrot where i got into a rhythm and didnt realize how close to the stem I'd gotten. General dumbassery, basically

So for various reasons, even though I only cook anything more complicated than mac and cheese or a hamburger once in a blue moon(through a combination of laziness, lack of funds, and still living with parents who both cook) I've managed to get my hands on a surprising amount of cook books over the years(most from various thrift stores), with a decent amount of variety to them, got some for regional American foods(including a copy of Paul Prudhomme's Louisiana Kitchen), various books for Italian and French cooking, and even a couple for Japanese food

So I'm thinking of maybe hunting down some additional books on various cuisines both American and International in nature, and while I'm open to recommendations for pretty much anything, I think my first specific one will be for African food, as that feels like something especially interesting to look into

Extremely so, but keep in mind that Africa is a huge continent with a ton of diverse cultures that have widely varying culinary traditions.

Moroccan, Ethiopian, and maybe South African cuisines will probably be among the easiest to find English-language resources on, and they're also amazing. West African cuisines are incredibly diverse and spicy as well.

I am working from home today so I turned the oven on to reheat some leftovers. I went to check on said oven and there was a 10 inch flame coming up off of the (electric) element. I killed the temp and put out the flame.

I told my wife about it when she got home and she said "oh, that must have been from the frozen pizza i made."

She left a bigass glob of cheese on the element and didnt clean it up or tell me about it. She does not cook, so it didn't occur to me that I should check the stove since I last used it.

I am curious what my third kitchen calamity will be after fingat and fire so i can put this bad luck streak behind me lol.

I never have cooked with frog before. One of my favorite brew pub/restaurant serves them and I quite liked them the couple times I've ordered them. I have never run into bullfrogs in NH, but here is hoping the final plague is something edible and not cane toads or something. I'd give locusts a try too

The eyes are perfectly edible. I know this cause the ravens have figured this out and regularly pin the toads down and eat their eyes then let them hop away blindly.

Okay fair point, but ravens are susceptible to their poison so presumably the eyes are poison free, though yeah there could be something else there bad for people that ravens can deal with.

Apparently some of the crows have figured out that there are other edible parts, too; you just have to be careful about flipping the toad on its back and not eating the skin.

Speaking of mead, that’s good stuff. There’s brewer here in London that makes a hopped mead that’s absolutely delicious. Their regular mead is pretty drat good too. Have you had tej before?
I introduced my book club to mead. They al laughed at me until they tasted it.

Mead is the bomb

There aren't any meaderies near where I live so whenever I'm on a long rear end car trip I check for meaderies along the route and stop in and grab a case if I can.

Then when I visit people instead of bringing a bottle of wine I bring a bottle of mead

Clapton Craft on Stroud Green Road. It’s Gosnell’s.

The Citra Sea and Hibiscus are interesting but my favourite is the hopped. Even the plain one isn’t sickly sweet, but the hopped one has that extra bitterness which moderates the sweetness really nicely. It goes down real easy.

I only had tej once, at an excellent Ethiopian restaurant. It was absolutely delicious.

Melt - This used to be a hipster place. It's now more of a local chain. Giant, grilled cheese sandwiches but you'll want to eat lightly afterwards.
Sokolowski's - Cafeteria style, European/Polish restaurant. Get the pierogi's.
West Side Market - It's an open air market. Great place to get fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat. There's a few stands that sell food too. There's a gyro place that is pretty good. Again, they can be the size of your head.

Trip reports
Melt: Got the chicken parm one and the firecracker chicken (pretty much Nashville hot chicken with pepperjack, avo, and grilled pineapple). Frickin tasty, huge, and surprisingly good cocktails. fun place.
Sokolowski's: Stuffed cabbage! The pierogies were just all right, the onions/butter were off putting.
West Side Market: Didn't end up eating there (killed a little time before Sokolowski's opened), but it's a neat place. Seemed really weird that the produce people were just selling supermarket stuff instead of a farmer's market though.
Swenson's: Man those kids haul rear end lol Fun spot, but liked the plain cheeseburger better than the galley boy. Too much of those weird sauces.
Happy Dog: :swoon: Got a red hot with pimento mac, chili, habanero pickled red onions, pico, and cheddar. The fries were great too, especially with the garlic aioli.

Overall Cleveland seemed like a good food city, though the international options seemed lacking from what we're used to. It's also really weird that most gyro places had "flavored" ones with like Cajun seasoning and nacho cheese and stuff
