Frog Act posted:metropolis is very much pro socialist propaganda It's not. Metropolis does have a certain Marxist-informed view of industrial capitalism, but the solution at the end is the unity of labor & capital under a new deal instead of the overthrow of capital by labor. It's a reactionary sentiment that could just as easily be interpreted as fascist. The contradictions between labor and capital aren't resolved, they're just sort of sublimated to a new unifying will. It's the way liberals think capitalism's problems could be resolved if we just had good capitalists that were nice to the workers.

Tellingly, the Nazis loved and Fritz Lang came to hate it later in life. It's still a great movie though.

I'm looking at that glass of coke and wonder if they actually used a real glass, or if the whole thing isn't a clever sculpture of some kind, with every bead of condensation a fast-drying plastic applied by hand

A photography set is very hot because of all the strong lights, and you can only give that look of "freshness" with tricks (for example: plastic ice cubes) If it can make you feel better, I read that advertising laws mandate that the food product being advertised must be the real product, so the liquid in the glass is almost certainly Coke. However, advertisers are free to apply "make up" to the advertised food to make it look better: for example, you can't add filling to a sandwich or burger to make it look bigger, but you can move all the filling that there is to the front. Or you could undercook the burger patty so it doesn't shrivel up, and then "correct" the color with shoe polish Non-products shown in the ad, like the grilled cheese here, don't have to actually be the food they look like (for example: mashed potatoes with food coloring instead of ice cream), or even food at all (engine oil instead of maple syrup) hackbunny has issued a correction as of 17:48 on Apr 12, 2018 |

So Union Carbide in the 1950s had the slogan "a hand in things to come". This lead to a striking and occasionally insane ad campaign: Basically because the hand seems like a supervillian in action: "Listen to it scream! And it is helpless to resist in our hands!" "Biological life is NO MATCH FOR US" "I can improve you" "Someday, even the moon will bow to us!" "The very stones of the earth howl at my touch!" "SEE my awesome, benevolent hand at work in one of the poorest places on earth!" "I can change this planet's stability at will!" "The cosmos itself is mine to tinker with, once I find the anti-life equation"

Oh boy oh boy I just remembered the greatest thing. In 1992, Italian cartoonist Romano Scarpa made an anti-Communist Mickey Mouse story (as a parody of Ninotchka), managed to get it published officially and everything, although until last year it was never reprinted Look at those wacky equalists, peddling Carl Barks' Der Cent.
