Good to know if I need a drinking game...

But it seems that there are a number of points where the game was either rushed through or just has gaps in its interactions/storylines... Especially with that Dev post...

I mention this in the updates, but the devs added Lo Pheng's storyline after burning through their kickstarter money. It's the most rushed of the three. Weirdly it's also the only storyline that stands on its own and has such rarities as "character development" and "something to say".

I still theorize it's the only one the writers enjoyed making / had a chance to exercise creativity with. Everything else was so concerned with following source material and copying Banner Saga, that there was probably little enjoyment to making it. If the people working on the project aren't enthused about it, it likely won't be made with the best effort possible.

Then again, I don't know what development was like at the studio. There's probably an interesting story behind it we'll never hear.

There is a much rarer ending for Thorn (that I have no idea how to show off) where Gleda hears she's marked from Hopper and kills herself to save the world. An enraged Thorn attacks Hopper and you have to pick one of the two heroes to fight to the death.

If you choose Thorn with an evil Lo Pheng, he attacks and tries to kill Gleda and you have to kill him.

There is a lot of wacky madness that can happen at the end of the game, which is part of the reason I decided to LP it.

This is actually pretty cool but also a clear sign of the developers biting off waaaaaaay more than they can chew.

Due to the last minute surge for overpowered rear end whooping, Ramlin and Lo Pheng will be our crew for the final battle.

I have a surprise planned for the next update.

Lo Pheng and the End of the Game

So I promised you all a surprise, and that surprise is a video finale update! Special shout-out to Solitair for joining me on this horrible confusing misadventure.

I don't know how to make sweet banners, so watch this!

Additional Postmortem Thoughts

I still don't know what, exactly, this game is about. The whole deal with Chila defying the will of God to send Hopper to learn all the riddles to "invoke the native gods of Terminum or some poo poo" turns it from a vaguely tolerable Christian allegory to another genre work that's just up its own rear end. The game is both literally poorly constructed, in that there are innumerable errors and proofreading mistakes, and figuratively poorly constructed in a literary sense. For some reason I remembered this game as being a decent game with some glaring flaws where the developers failed not because of ineptitude but because they tried to do too much.

This game is an irredeemable pile of trash.

The gameplay is awful. The story is awful but also essential to the story of the game so even if the gameplay was good you'd be fettered to a corpse. The art and music are far too good for the rest of the game. The worst part is that the writers clearly want to take on advanced philosophical topics like free will and the nature of divinity but have an exceedingly poor grasp of human nature and basic plot structure. Remember how Chila's endgame hot lady form appeared only to Gleda, and how all the characters were talking up how special she was, but that never went anywhere because we picked Lo Pheng? Is Reet literally God now? If the god we imprisoned was a lady, who was the male god in Hopper's flashbacks who was cutting off people's dicks and eating children?

Or look at the characters. Treeg is supposedly a benevolent king beloved by all, but he comes off as a childish tyrant prone to making poor decisions with an IQ entitling him to a special ride on a short bus. Hopper is an immortal divine messenger who comes off as a whiny brat. Thorn is supposedly a leader of men and a living legend who comes off as a short-sighted violent incompetent. Chila is supposed to come off as a wise oracle providing divine guidance to stave off terrible ancient demons...until the end when it's revealed she had no idea what she was doing and was petulantly spitting in the eye of God. The way the authors would have you view the characters is completely different then the characters actually act, and it's very hard to take the chastising of Hopper/the player at the end of the game for missing clues seriously because if Chila wasn't a paste-loving moron she could have just...told Hopper what she wanted. The only characters that have a clear arc are Lo Pheng and his crew, and there is a horrible dichotomy where they're tangential to Chila and her plans until they get shoehorned into being at Opacum, but the final boss of the game comes out of nowhere if you're not playing Lo Pheng.

Anyway, that concludes this run of Ash of Gods. There are a few more things I could show off if there's any interest. The game has a multiplayer mode, which I believe requires grinding to unlock Reaper units I could touch on briefly. I could do a short bonus update on the mobile prequel game which appears to be an exercise in asset reuse and grinding. I did mention a fuckup run, but I feel I've covered enough of "and this dumb poo poo happens" that it wouldn't be that interesting and we'd be stuck going through a lot of repetitive crap.

Otherwise my next LP is going to be that Torment: Tides of Numenera game if we decide we're done with Ash of Gods.

We'll start,
like many good things,
with a bear.

Especially considering Reet is basically the most important character, this could have mostly just been Lo Pheng and been a better story most likely. But I don't think anything could have saved it from its overall terrible plotting.

So what? You can't prove I posted that.
That ending was just..."bleh", is honestly the best word I can use for it. Gigantic plot dump, underwhelming reveals, and a large number of inconsistencies. If they wanted "wild combat", then perhaps they should've went for something that wasn't a turn based system, or y'know, make it less incredibly slow? That final battle was simply anticlimactic in general, Lo Pheng spam aside. Thinking about what you said with the final fight coming out of nowhere, it makes me think now that they had to release Lo Pheng's story in an attempt to make the story legible regardless if they got their backer money or not.

Bah, whatever, this game's story really just is one giant, incomprehensible gently caress up isn't it? I'll agree that the artists and the music team would do best to find someone else to work for, what they did is pretty good for the most part. The programming and writing are just jank, though, from what I've seen and read here.

With how much of a slog it'll be to do go through that entire story again to do the "fuckup" run, I'd say it be best you just didn't. Knowing that the game kills Thorn for making a logical decision and running away from the gigantic Frisian army is good enough. I wouldn't mind seeing a screenshot or two of the asset re-use mobile game or if there's anything to note about the Reaper units, but don't bother to grind them.

Honestly, you've spent more than enough time with this thing, you can just move on to the next game and I wouldn't be bothered a bit. I'd never have seen this game in motion anyways if you hadn't done that in video- it was a fun surprise.

I forgot to mention that Pathologic also has a bleak tone, one more thing that made me think of it while being exposed to rear end of Clods. Difference is, Ice Pick Lodge knew how to make the pieces of their game fit together, especially by creating a gameplay loop that accentuates the feeling that you're fighting a very uphill battle and your quest is probably futile. It's a good game and I recommend reading/watching a Let's Play of it.

I vote that you get to Tides as soon as possible. I feel like I've learned everything I can from this particular LP, and I'm eager to see a different form of failure.

Solitair is right, that's a nice soundtrack.

Whoops they explicitly said Hopper was still alive as a Curro. I'm dumb.

Man, the gods being dead was pretty misleading wasn't it? In fact, there were gods of two words running around.

So in sum: In the original world, one god decided "hey, what if I torture and eat people". The other gods said "wait no", tried to stop the bad god, failed, but managed to "save" their people (Enses) and servants (Umbra and Reaper) by sending them to another world before dying. Bad god is still able to order/control the Reapers and has them start reaping so they can keep being gross in the current world. Chila decides to betray the bad god and through a series of unlikely events, bad god gets stuck in one of the chosen ones along with the Reapers minus dead Reaper and Chila. But because this can't be too happy an ending bad god ate every single ense/whatever else was in their ark before they woke up. Any hope for the old world is completely dead.

It's really weird and I don't know who is supposed to be coming through the portal. Hopper seems to have no idea who this god is despite the fact he worked directly for the gods of Calz and accompanied the mad god on his excursions. Hopper starts rambling about how the god who was trying to come through is a she, and was apparently Childao's master and not one of the gods of the other Reapers. I think we are supposed to believe the Reapers are acting on their own to resurrect their masters? Anyway, dick and boobs guy was a dude and I believe Khama refers to the mad god as a "he" as well.

I'll try to get this into the archives after Thanksgiving and then start up Tides. In the meantime, have the trailer for Ash of Shovelware: Give us money.
