Mister Speaker posted:They're absolutely nuts live and their diehard fans are even crazier. Don't expect anything like a D&B show, it's really somewhere between a rave and a punk show. I caught them during the Invaders Must Die tour about nine years ago (drat) and that was the only electronic show I've been to where I've had to move back in the crowd, so I could breathe. Man, it's wild to think that was a full decade ago now. I miss Pendulum. That remix album from last year doesn't count at all. Just break up Knife Party and make new poo poo already, drat. I still have In Silico on heavy rotation. Surprised I hadn't discovered that album earlier in life; it's like exactly what I wanted out of electronic music when I was younger - reese basses mixed with riff-driven rock & roll. I'm sure they're great live but any videos I've ever seen of them (except for like two years ago at Ultra, I guess) has looked a bit boring. Rob plays that weird MIDI guitar with no stage presence at all, and what's going on with KJ's drums? On the Reading video he's got virtually no cymbals, like someone forgot to turn the overhead mics on. Are there other bands out there that do the In Silico buttrock/D&B sound well? I know Enter Shikari and Hadouken sort of do, but honestly I don't really care for their sound.

I dunno, but when my band played with KJ, he had a full drum kit, and by that I mean we had an entire Pathfinder full of just his poo poo with only room to add two guitar cases one passenger. He also spends a lot of time lovingly tuning everything before warming up. I dunno what his Pendulum rig looks like, tho, and he's got all those electronic triggers and poo poo in all the solo videos of him, so...YMMV? Krewella kind of seem to be reaching for a Pendulum sound thru EDM. Sometimes Concord Dawn hit the spot, too.

I've got a love/hate relationship with Pendulum. They were the ones who introduced me to D&B back in 2006 which I've loved ever since however I very quickly moved on from them and rarely if ever find myself re-listening to their stuff these days. An argument can be made that a lot of their work is extremely derivative as this vid shows off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g61brCepGVE So yeah, if it weren't for Penduldum I might have never discovered D&B but at the same time they're definitely nowhere near the best of what the genre has to offer. That said, my favourite Pendulum track is definitely Masochist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swbQkLPWm-Q As for producers who come close to the Pendulum style, I reckon Dirtyphonics, Joe Ford and The Prototypes are close to it. High-energy, big drums and loud synths: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMs1bQ6q92I https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaBk2hJw0DE Pile Of Garbage fucked around with this message at 11:02 on Jan 26, 2019 |

Pile Of Garbage posted:I've got a love/hate relationship with Pendulum. Same. Honestly I don't really dig a lot of their actual rave anthems, instrumental as they were for driving forward new ideas and 'big'-sounding production in the genre. Like I said I really like In Silico only because growing up on big beat electronica like the Chemical Brothers and the Crystal Method I still crave electronic music with a real guitar-rock structure and sound to it, and IMO that album does that really, really well. Some tunes from Immersion hit that mark as well but it's largely more cookie-cutter big-room D&B with Rob's extremely generic voice over it. That '18 Pendulum Songs At The Same Time' video is hilarious (there's also a really funny Skrillex one), and there's some truth to that, but you have to remember that a lot of those tunes are pretty drastically key-adjusted to fit one another, and it's not 18 songs for the entire video, some are pulled when the bar-beat structure doesn't gel. If you're going to call big-room two-step D&B derivative then the scope is much wider than just Pendulum. A big part of the sameness is, as mentioned, the unwandering two-step rhythm and that notorious Pendulum snare that every other producer figured out and got bored of in like a year. That 'formula', for better or worse, defined a lot of mainstream D&B for years to come. But, like I said, I only really dig their 'rock n roll' tunes. Everything else is mostly forgettable; I don't generally find myself bumping Hold Your Colour at all anymore, but might gurn nostalgically if one of the tunes snuck up on me in some DJ's set. I also find it really funny that El Hornet still tours DJ sets under the Pendulum name... actually having said that it's kind of sad. Pile Of Garbage posted:As for producers who come close to the Pendulum style, I reckon Dirtyphonics, Joe Ford and The Prototypes are close to it. High-energy, big drums and loud synths: Oh yeah, I gently caress with Joe Ford's stuff heavily. He's got a lot of melodic sensibility and rock n' roll elements to his tunes, including one of my favourite rhythmic nods, (if I'm remembering this from music theory) 'leading eigth notes', where the musical phrase starts an eighth note before the downbeat of the bar. You can hear it here in Take the Lead but he employs it a lot, sometimes even right at the drop. Very rock n' roll. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WO1HVLW4Dq4 To that end, I think some of my favourite productions of his aren't D&B at all. Immobilise is a wicked halftime number (although it's still 'Drum & Bass' in my DJ library, because of my penchant for weird halftime) with a 9/4 polyrhythm that fits the name - how the gently caress do you dance to this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gj3bUg7ENs Distilled might be my favourite tune of his. A 125BPM breakbeat banger with a decidedly buttrockin' riff that makes me pick up an air bass guitar every drat time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGOwliWACYQ Mister Speaker fucked around with this message at 23:28 on Jan 29, 2019 |

Regional D&B chat: it looks like the Perth, Western Australia D&B scene is on the way down/out. We've been blessed for the last ~15 years with a huge local fan following, powerful promoters (Well, more like promoter: Inhibit Promotions) and a swath of local producers. Perth has been the first stop for almost all D&B producers who're touring SEA and/or ANZ. However recently we've had some high-profile local producers/DJs stepping out of the scene. The first was Terence "Tez" Bewsey, founder of the Perth D&B label Good Karma Music and a DJ who played with his brother Phillip under the title Terence & Phillip. In mid-2018 Tez announced that he had decided to move to the UK permanently so he is out of the Perth scene for good. Next was a good friend of mine, Michael Pizzino, a truly industrious individual who produced and performed under two monikers: Blayze for D&B and Killionaire for Dubstep. Late last year Michael told me that he'd decided to stop producing D&B and was instead just going to focus on Dubstep as he feels generally disillusioned with the genre as a whole. Most recently Matt Dowthwaite, director of the local D&B promoter Fluency and a D&B DJ performing under the name Matty D, has announced that he is retiring from the scene to pursue a path similar to Heist (Setting up his own DJ teaching type of business). So that's three big exits in the last ~6 months. On top of this I keep hearing rumours around the big local promoter, Inhibit Promotions, specifically that they've been playing favourites with giving gigs to local producers/DJs that go out of their way to try and book Inhibit shows over those from other promoters. I'm not giving up and live in hope that a new wave of local talent will enter the scene to rejuvenate things. That aside and to loopback to earlier discussions I want to talk about how much Pendulum did to promote the local D&B scene in Perth after they went massive: Yeah thanks for nothing guys

Anyway, The Blood of Heroes is one of the many band-based supergroups on the label, with guys like Justin Broaderick, end.user, and Bill Laswell contributing. Might be up someone's alley. If you like these, also check out Gator Bait Ten and Inamorata. Similar setups, but different personnel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU2yFuUlqpA I played the guitar part for this on stage with end.user and Submerged for our first Portland gig. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAiW2qXy1JE I've also played this live a few times with Submerged, which I guess makes me the new Lauren Flax? parthenocarpy posted:Just got ahold of Black Secret Technology by A Guy Called Gerald and I love it. Hoping to get some recommendations like it BST goes down as one of my favourite albums of all time. Nothing quite sounds the same as it, Gerald was always kinda out there doing his own thing. But along the same veins as it I'd hit up all those mid-90s Jungle/D&B albums. I mean it's always been a singles game, and I could bore you to tears listing a ton of 12"s but I'll stick to the common LPs this now to make life easier. So in no particular order: Goldie's Timeless LP is well, timeless. The big original Jungle/D&B album. Goldie actually co-produced Energy off BST (though I still rank BST above it). 4Hero Parallel Universe, they also did an album for R&S under the moiker Jacob's Optical Stairway whic is worth picking up too. Omni Trio's The Deepest Cut and Haunted Science LTJ Bukem's Logical Progression mix. The first one. I'd also pick up those first two Metalheadz Platinum Breakz comps. And as CSC said above try Photek's Modus Operandi and Form & Function, Source Direct's LP Exorcise The Demons as well as the two albums T-Power put out on SOUR, The Self-Evident Truth of an intelligent Mind and Waveform And if you can find it Reinforced Records (4Hero's label) put out a great comp in the mid-90s called Jungle Book - Intelligent Minds of Jungle. I want to say Reinforced re-released it digitally. I think. Possibly? Maybe? Either way get it if you can. Like I said I can go on all day with singles and LPs and comps but try them first. Oh and I'd grab Gerald's follow-up to BST, which came out around 2000 called Essence.

Welp, Keith Flint took his life over the weekend. No words. I saw the Prodigy last month in Australia and despite their age they brought it and there was great crowd energy. They didn't shy away from their back-catalogue, dropping several older tracks, which was great to see. I stood back for the show and as I walked out, vowed to be more up the front next time despite feeling like I'm getting too old, because the energy looked so wonderful. It really sucks for his friends, loved ones and the band. e: Beeb article Nam Taf fucked around with this message at 13:30 on Mar 4, 2019 |
