Wow, that demo sure takes its sweet time getting you to the open world part. I'm used to the Japanese language demos being little sandboxes bookended by cutscenes but this was straight up the beginning of the game for about an hour. Some of this stuff they tried with the story presentation could be fun, the walk-and-talk segment with Nishiki felt like Team Yakuza taking a page out of GTA5's book but I'm not sure how I like those Poser-quality "manga" cutscenes. This demo's plot just goes on and on and on though, it's kind of exhausting when you don't know the language. I'm impressed that they went all out and let you explore all of Kamuro-cho. I'm also shocked it took 45 minutes of gameplay to get to the point where the game unblocks Share content.

Kiryu having 3 different modes of fighting is pretty weird, I don't know what they all do yet aside from (I'm guessing) Blue = MMA, Red = Pure Striker, Yellow = Grappler/Sumo Guy. That Ishin sphere grid is kind of confusing but it's more fun to fill than the usual level up that the games had before, and I'm loving the idea of having multiple HEAT bars that you can stock and expend to nuke entire fights.

Is there any way to skip the entire story railroading and get straight to the open world of the demo from the main menu? I'd play this demo again if I didn't have to sit through all the scenes and do the tutorial with Nishiki.

The cutscenes are stand-ins for the real thing, I think. There's a thing at the beginning saying that because it's a demo some aspects will differ significantly from the final product.

Aw, I actually thought they were kinda stylish. Like the evolution of those still shot images for flashbacks in the earlier games.

Done with Yak4, nice Yakuza film of a game. I kinda want to record and put the entire post-point of no return part of Ishin online because that's a top budget Hollywood legendary piece compared to Yak4s sets and scenes.

When was the last time you got that much out of a western developed game before finishing it, without grinding, without running out of content? Would have been able to platinum a good bunch of fullpriced western titles in that time. Ishin with its massively increased amount of content and not to mention fun and amazing crafting stood somewhere past 54 hours when I finished it for its first time.

Bring on 5.

The entire endgame for Yakuza 4 is one of the coolest things ever. Like from the point where Tanimura has the briefcase and on is so rad. I can't wait to eventually go through Ishin.

I think the music is a big part of why Yakuza 4 is so good. All of them have great soundtracks but 2 and 4 in particular really stand out for me.

Bad news: The arcade games are priced add-ons and will come out next week. :sigh:

That SF Tokkou Kuubo Beluga in the RGG0 Vita app is a really weird choice. If I'm reading this right, it's a port from PC of a shooting game made by someone who became known for good quality ports of Sega and other arcade games to systems like the X68000. That PC game was then ported to the PC-6001 because that's where the guy got his start in making games (again, with a port - Xevious) and now he has added 16-bit style graphics to it (I guess because it's the late 80s in the game at this point?). Not that the game cares about consistency - Columns was a 1990 game.

It looks like at least that (and I assume Columns) are being handled by M2, which is good news. If they put their usual level of extras in, it'll be well worth the 540 yen.

Interesting. It says "Yakuza 0" instead of "ryu ga gotoku 0" under the PS4 play history for English text. I wonder if that is a hint at localization.

Did the play history of Ishin say something similar when played under a PS4 profile in English?

Ishin just doesn't appear, not even when unlocking trophies (in "Whats New"). My other Japanese games are happy to show up there.

I would hope so. I would imagine they wouldn't want to announce any plans for it until after Yakuza 5 comes out as to not confuse whatever potential tiny new audience there is.

The platinum trophy is pretty easy but 100% is just loving nuts. That said I did it anyway on the disc version, I think billiards was the toughest for me.

I plat'd it back in the day. I rebought it again online, discovered that my saves were no longer compatible, and am currently in the process of doing it again. Because I'm goddamn crazy. And yes, some of them are rough. The batting cages are more annoying than fun, mahjong is basically a matter of luck as far as I'm concerned, and don't even get me STARTED on the traditional gambling minigames.

I'm pretty sure Yakuza 3 ends up actually being harder to plat than Yakuza 4 despite having less things to do, too. And yet when Yakuza 5 comes out, I'm gonna do it all over again.

What's with the eh... bretonnian dance, sir?

While I enjoy the whole idea and parts of it, the fighter training with Saejima is such cruel, AI-dependent horse poo poo sometimes. That's the only time I can think of in Yakuza where I've had to furiously keep returning to main menu, load, pray to the computing gods that the AI actually feels like attacking, then end up repeating the process like 5 more times until they just curbstomp their opponents with ease at long last. And I mean even with great stats, topped out trust and condition, really good skills etc. sometimes your guy just refuses to do anything except run their face into the other person's fist.

That's because almost every single AI character in the 10+ years this franchise has run is built for exactly that. It's unfortunate they didn't/couldn't do new AI routines for friendly dudes you aren't controlling.

Yup. For whatever reason (probably because they removed the installation movies), Yakuza 4 and Dead Souls have different sets of saves between disc and download versions, meaning they're not compatible. The trophy lists do carry over, however.

Screenshots!

First, from the Vita app:

Modes:
Arena fights, Casino gambling games (Texas Hold'em Poker, Blackjack, Baccarat, Roulette)
Arcade games that aren't available yet, some confusing slot machine thing, buy/sell items

Kiryu's side is almost the same, except the casino games are replaced with the ancient gambling games.

Money cannot be share between the Kiryu and Majima sides. Each earns money separately.

One of the many fighters. This one fights drunken-style.

When I can, I'll put up a video of the announcer. He is ridiculous. "Grrrrrrrrrr-o MAJIMAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

Another fighter, "Manhunter" somename. He won't drop the shotgun no matter what.
See the purple bottle? Those and other drinks randomly come down, giving you or the opponent random buffs such as temporary invulnerability or be drunk.

Some other fighters have weapons such as sickles and shovels.

You can "play" mahjong...

...by picking up the table and smashing onto the opponent. :hellyeah:

Funny thing: on fights with weapons in the arena, if you do a heat move with the weapon, all of the other weapons will temporarily disappear, then reappear after a second. Also, the crowd looks like cardboard cutouts waving back and forth.

Protip: Don't forget to upgrade your skills while doing the arena fights, making them easier. You can do this during a fight through the pause menu.

Also, I think Kiryu has a parry maneuver. Sometimes when I tried to attack and the other person attacks at the same time, Kiryu flashes red for a split second, avoids the attack and punches him.

Blackjack

Poker

Too bad this was on low-limit. :sweatdrop:

Yeah, that's one of the weird trophies. IIRC you have to play through on Normal. Pretty sure you can use your clear save data and just run through it. It goes quick if you skip all the cutscenes and just run to the story point in each chapter.

Be sure to get and save a 777 Stone from your hard mode playthrough or premium adventure. Then you can get another one in your normal playthrough and get the pachinko trophy easily.
