This is one of the most annoying things about E:D Edit: as a new player. There's a bunch of poo poo that fires off after some random number of seconds of sitting at a place, but there's no useful UI to show that you're waiting on top of the quest marker and not just hanging out at some random map element that has no bearing on your mission.

I wanted to reply earlier but work was in the way. Those, and the station rescue missions, are real good fun. I’d say if you can afford an asp explorer and swap the DBX internals into it you’d have more cargo space. If you can’t afford an asp then try it with your dbx. The benefit of the dbx I’d say is that if the thargoid gets wind of you, you can go silent running for much longer while collecting pods and such. The dbx runs ultra cold without problems and the thargoid won’t be able to target you. Otherwise, you really just need a competent shield, cargo racks, a collector limpet, and maybe if you can squeeze it a hull reinforcement mod just in case. I don’t feel like the thargoid attacks you too quickly, so if you’re standoffish and use your limpets you can collect the escape pods and high tail it out of there.

The ideal SAR vessel is a fully turreted type-10 that shoots flack and experimental rounds at the thargoid while sitting at 0m/s waiting for the limpets to finish.

You can also fly into one of the burning stations and collect personal belongings fliating around afaik - A DBX with a HS launcher and collector limpets is perfect for that one.

Damnit Steve, you know I'm a sucker for Back to the Future references.
So I've started this back up after a while. I'm still having the same problems I was having before though. I don't quite understand how to find targets for assassinations or bounty missions. It tells me to go to a system, scan the nav beacon and then it'll tell me his last known body he was near. The mission now just tells me to go there, I go there and I fly around forever but the target never shows up and doesn't really give me any clues as to what to do next.

I'm still in the starter ship. Do I need special modules to do this? Can anyone point me in the right direction here?

After some time, near the body it sends you to, there will be an impossible-to-miss MISSION USS in a different color and with an extra pop-up and everything. Sometimes it just takes a long time to come up, but it should never be more than 5 minutes. Just keep flying around the planet until you find the spot. Sometimes you'll see ships pop into supercruise in the area - head there, because sometimes that'll be where a USS will spawn.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing. You're gonna be looking for a mission related signal source. You gotta be in supercruise for signal sources to show up, and they won't show up unless you're actually moving. I.e., if you're sitting in super cruise with your engines idle, you won't find anything. But other than that, it's totally random when it will show up.

Other possibility: the target will be flying around in super cruise, and in that case you will need an FSD Interdictor to pull him into normal space where you can use your weapons on him.

Made it to 800k after a few bounty missions with lucky patrol positioning in the sector.

I enjoy Bounty Hunting but exploring/mining is also pretty neat. I presume if I go Cobra I won't be as efficient as if I go Viper for Combat. I'm thinking maybe get an Eagle first to see if combat is really for me and then maybe pick a bigger one?

What would you recommend, it'd genuinely be my first move up from a starter sidewinder with no upgrades. I like exploration/combat mostly if that helps.

Cobras rule and are great multirole ships. That being said I think my biggest piece of advice is just have fun and try things. There really is no"best" in elite unless you are strictly doing pvp. Find what you love, some of my favorite ships are my favorite just because the canopy is massive and the engine sounds cool.

Edit: and earning the cheaper ships really doesn't take long, so don't over think your decision too much!

Any advice on where to go to learn how do some fighting? I've heard of combat zones, but I'm not sure where to go to find one. I'd like to up my Federation standing with the eventual goal of getting the permit access to Sol. I've got a reasonable warchest banked up from running a few hours of exploration missions using the road to riches guide, so I can afford to crash a bunch of Vipers or Eagles or whatever.

I'm currently based near Barnard's Star, if that helps.

I'd recommend not doing Combat Zones as a newcomer in an early ship, you'll get torn apart without even knowing why. Instead look for Resource Extraction Sites in the rings of gas giants, and go pirate hunting.

In CZs, a whole fleet of ships will happily dogpile you, but in RES you can pick your own targets, at your own pace. Make sure you're not carrying anything in your hold (so pirates don't actively try to gank you), then just zoom around scanning ships. You'll find some with bounties, and if you think you can take them, go ahead and attack them one at a time. Depending on the type of RES, you might even have police forces helping you out. If you follow the police around, you can even score some kills against ships that are currently out of your league; just wait for the police to whittle them down, then join in the attack to finish them off.

Alternately, hang out at nav beacons and scan for pirates/smugglers with warrants. Same deal as RES, pretty much.

Tonight I did evacuation missions for the first time. While they were a lot easier than I expected (I brought way too many heat sinks; I've only needed one per trip in my lightweight passenger T6), the aesthetic of the burning stations are pretty amazing. Makes me wish I had a T9 or T10 ready to roll; with such a short trek to the rescue ship, it would be lots of fun fill up a space ark with a kajillion refugees.

Another dumb combat question: how do I get my guns to recharge faster? Is that he powerplant or the power distribution system? My little viper drained all four pulse lasers in about the time it took to blow up my target's shields, and then took approximately forever to recharge, making the second half of the fight take a long time. I had slammed all power to weapons because the cobra I was chasing couldn't get behind me, but still.

(It also warped out and when I scanned the high wake remains I goofed and just jumped to the system instead of jumping with the wake targeted. Luckily this was a mission target so I just went back to the mission zone and he respawned there out of suicidal kindness.)

And thanks for the advice on RES zones. I'll find some nearby and putz around there. Plus I imagine asteroid belts look cool and are fun (if dangerous) to fight in.

In addition to what's been said, you can also mix up your weapon types to use less drain. For example, take two pulse lasers and bind them to your first weapon group, then two kinetic weapons, such as cannons or multicannons, and bind them to your second group. Use the lasers to strip the shields, and then the kinetics to smash the hull, mixing in more laser shots as distributor power allows.

Upgrading the power distributor will make your weapons and afterburner recharge faster and have more capacity to run. In general, the power distributor tends to be the cheapest to upgrade part on your ship while being one of the vital ones, so make sure to tune that sucker up.

Also, the Viper's power distributor and generator are sort of undersized to run four heavy energy weapons at the same time; like others have suggested, I'd recommend you go for a more mixed setup. Something like lasers of your preferred flavor in the C1 nose mounts and multicannons in the C2 mounts makes for a great cookie cutter bounty hunter build that's a whole lot less reliant on the power distributor. Multicannons deal kinetic damage, so they're less powerful against shields but they'll absolutely shred unshielded targets of roughly your own size.

Other options would be cannons (shortish range, high damage, especially good for 'swinging up' against bigger targets, if a little difficult to use), frag cannons (essentially a hilariously upscaled shotgun, extremely short range but immense damage if you can catch the target in a full blast), dumbfire missiles (cheap, simple rocket launchers, especially good for a 'strike bomber' type style and blasting subsystems off larger craft) and seeker missiles (limited ammo capacity, excellent for dogfighting, also capable of threatening large targets). Feel free to experiment.

Railguns and PAs are awesome, but there's no way in hell the power grid on a Viper-3 will run them without extensive modifications!

(Incidentally, if you want to give those a try, the Diamondback Scout makes for an excellent platform for that.)

If you're just doing Trading/Mining then the type-6 is probably your best ship for quite a while. Python at 50mil would be a good step up in the medium category and the type-9 if you're into the bulk stuff - both of which you should set aside about double their hull price for outfitting. The king of hauling/mining is definitely the Cutter as your very long term project.

You can sell any modules back for 100% of what you paid, and selling a ship you only take a 10% hit. As long as you have a decent stack of credits, you really don't have much to lose by taking ships for a test drive and seeing what you like. The smaller ships are cheap enough that 10% as a "test drive" fee is probably the equivalent of just running a couple missions.

Okay so I went ahead and dropped the cash for a HOTAS setup and jesus this is hard to get used to. Biggest problem right now is trying figure out what button is what. Having the mapping software saying "SLD, MOd3, Rotary 2, H4" as the button/switch and the game saying "JOY 5, JOY 29, JOY 31" isn't helpful. Beyond that... umm... having a problem relearning to fly. I was just using Mouse + Xbox pad before and was getting the hand of it. Now I'm loving noob city. Hoping this is worth it in the long run.

When should I move out from the starter area? I was thinking of just flying out into the void or whereever that aliance with the cheaper mods was but I'm not sure if most system will have spots to do missions etc to make money.
