NASA basically exists as a way to throw billions at defense contractors. There is no "non-profit space exploration" through them.

Blank cheques are useless if you don't know how to fix the problem, you can't buy your way out of a cave, the divers aren't doing it for money, are highly skilled, motivated, the equipment is fine and funding isn't the issue. Sending people from the Boring Company is the best move as they can study the problem without interfering with the rescue effort.

Dude, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commercial_Orbital_Transportation_Services

quote:

ASA's Final Report on the Commercial Orbit Transportation Services program considers it an unqualified success and a model for future public-private collaboration. Compared to traditional costs-plus contracts employed by NASA, such as the $12 billion Orion (spacecraft) contract, the unprecedented efficiency of the $800 million COTS investment resulted in "two new U.S. medium-class launch vehicles and two automated cargo spacecraft".[4]

NASA is doing it's mission.

i didn't say that it's a bad thing. it's endlessly hilarious that whenever spacex succeeds (80% nasa money, using technology built on decades of publicly-funded research) the libertarian bellends all show up to jerk themselves off over the power of the free market and private enterprise, while any time there's a delay or explosion they blame red tape or fat cat government workers.

spacex is great despite elon musk, not because of him

I wouldn't say that as he has helped among others to bring space travel back into the public's imagination. Without the initial funding and ability to bring the right people together SpaceX couldn't be. The engineers couldn't have done it without the company and Musk couldn't do it without the engineers. Maybe he was lucky but you can't ride luck into a functioning rocket.

A fair number of his other enterprises on the other hand I am not a fan of. His ego is also getting too big so don't worry if you hate him, he is letting out plenty of rope to hang himself.

INT. SPACEX HQ -- SOME TIME AGO

ELON MUSK: It would be really cool if we had a rocket that could use its main engine as a descent engine and like pop out some legs and land vertically like in all those old science fiction movies.
TOM MUELLER: That would be really cool, but it sounds super hard. I don't know if it's possible.
MUSK: You should work on that.

LATER

MUELLER: Okay, it took a huge amount of work, but I think I've figured it out.
MUSK: I knew we could do it!

To be fair, the work done with landing rockets is based on Mueller's pre-SpaceX work on deep-throttling engines which was adapted for Merlin's core design. Mueller based his engine on a pintile-injector design like that of the Apollo LM Descent Engine, so it was almost from inception very much able to do the kinds of burns needed to return the stage. The unknowns were in plume and engine behavior while flying bell-first at hypersonic speeds, and thats where a lot of the actually groundbreaking work has happened with SpaceX's landings. A lot of the work of doing tail landings existed in public domain due to NASA work in the 90s with DC-X (some of those who worked on it eventually directly went to Blue Origin).

Here are reviews of a car that is now 3 years old, lots of time for reliability and users review data to add up:

Gee they all rate the Model S as the best luxury sedan you can buy from that time. I've driven one, the car owns.

SpaceX is self evident. They have a better cor concept for a rocket that does the same mission for cheaper than the Boeing/Lockheed joint (ULA)
