-----Original Message----- From: XXX XXX <xxxxxxgmail.com> Sent: Saturday, 21 April 2018 1:09 PM To: XXXX Subject: What Chinese Confucius Institutes teach Dear XXX, Hello from Central China... I'm an Australian working here. I wonder what life lessons and "culture" can the Confucius Institutes possibly teach? I ask because, even after 5000 years of "progress", the Chinese society is in a horrible, pathetic, deplorable state. A few nights ago, we had huge explosions (fireworks) which went on for 2 hours, from 2am to 4am early in the morning, rocking the entire neighbourhood and destroying everyone's sleep. The reason for midnight fireworks? Either someone died or a child was born. And this happens EVERY time there's a birth or death, NO matter whether it's day or night. So is this the culture that a CI (Confucius Institute) would teach? Be as INconsiderate, be as INHUMAN to your neighbours as possible? But the strange thing is that people here find it acceptable to be woken up in the middle of the night by loud fireworks. Is this taught at CIs? Tolerate, accept, ignore bad behaviour, DO NOT question them? My Chinese friends and colleagues: they are nice, friendly and helpful to me -- but when we go out together, they are often rude and impersonal to strangers (their own fellow Chinese). Physical sense of touch or feeling -- You can push and shove your way through crowds in China without uttering "excuse me" or any other polite phrase. Again, nobody cares. Mei guan xi. Primitive, third century behaviour. Is this what Confucius Institutes (CIs) teach? At my university cafeteria here, I see students and staff spitting on the floor of the dining area! Highly disgusting. They would NOT dare spit in their homes -- however, spitting in a public dining area is fine! Is this the horrible Chinese culture taught at C.I.s? The 5 physical senses (light, sound, smell, touch, taste) are useless, ineffective, meaningless in China... There is a "Mei Guan Xi" attitude to everything.. The level of tolerance is infinite. Do the Chinese have ANY feeling of physical sense at all? What "philosphy" can a CI teach when the Chinese society is in such a primitive state? As a society, China seems to be several hundred years behind the rest of the world. As some analysts have noted, China is NOT a civil society. A sense of community (togetherness) does NOT exist here. I read a news story about an apartment tower in China where an elevator bulb blew out -- the residents owned cars, so they were reasonably well off. And yet, they were unwilling to spend a measly 20 yuan to buy a bulb ("why should I pay? Let another resident pay"). As a result, they were all riding up and down in that dark, pitch-black elevator for more than SEVEN YEARS before a new resident changed the bulb! 3 years ago, we all read horror stories about Chinese drivers involved in accidents running over their accident victims repeatedly, making sure that the victim is fully dead, just to save a few yuan on compensation payouts. Is this the sort of culture that the C.I.s teach? Treat your neighbours and fellow citizens as INHUMANLY as possible? What about being highly irresponsible (as the Chinese are)? Do the CIs teach students to be very IRRESPONSIBLE? How about cheating? And the herd mentality which is so common in China. Do the CIs encourage their students to follow the Chinese "monkey see monkey do" culture? China is a toy-world, a Disneyland -- adults think and behave like children. In processes such as the handling of harassment compliants, whistleblower protection etc, China appears to be extremely backward -- there is NO "due process" -- in most cases, the victim quietly suffers. What culture or philosophy can a Confucius Institute teach when the Chinese society is in such a pathetic, primitive, deplorable state? XXX XXX (Australian working in Central China)

I think it is correct to say that China HAD 5000 (more like 3500, am I right?) years of history until 1949.

Just heard from a friend about an incident that occurred a few days ago. She (Chinese) had recently joined a new company in Beijing as a translator, and was literally three weeks on the job. On Tuesday morning the police raided the office, confiscated everyone's phones, and kept them there until the afternoon where they were moved to the police station. She was placed in a small, dirty room with 10 other colleagues and ended up being questioned a few times (she had nothing to tell them, she had no clue what was going on). They ended up holding her and the other colleagues the whole night, not allowing them to call their families (her parents, husband and daughter were of course freaking out). She had her blood taken, and the police took mugshots of her, before being finally let go in the morning. The kicker is that everyone's social security accounts have been frozen by the police, until the investigation is finished, so not only is she out of a job but it's unlikely she can get hired by someone until they can access her social security account for deposits. Spent some time comforting her, she feels like poo poo, and says she now hates cops with a passion (kind of funny, since she's from a military family). It's freaky how you can be treated like a criminal here just for being employed by possible criminals.

From the d&d healthcare thread:Arglebargle III posted:Yeah China has a good system for general access to medical professionals and prescription drugs. Do you look Chinese? Often doctors are looking for/expecting payment directly from patients because everybody knows that doctors' salaries are too low. You could call it a bribe but really medical professionals' pay is a major problem in China so it's hard to feel like it's wrong. On the other hand can you imagine the wasted productivity of doctors collecting payment? Thoughts? Seems to contradict what i normally read in here about chinese healthcare.

Acceptable medical care is available in any major city and isn't punishingly expensive. They do try to throw TCM at you so it can be a struggle to find a decent place to go that uses actual medicine instead of wizardry, and he's right that doctors are paid next to nothing and it's a huge issue.

china's healthcare system is actually quite good, if you can find a good doctor that won't tell you to drink more hot water. for example, I have reoccurring ear infections, and it costs about .85 USD to go talk to the doctor. I see them almost immediately, they look at my ear, sometimes they clean it for free, other times they give me an antibiotic if I have an ear infection, and the antibiotic is always less than 5-10 USD. and that's it. in fact, when I'm back in the states, I fear getting an ear infection, because it will be expensive AF, as im uninsured and I live in china, but in china, if I get one, it costs a few USD and gets cleared up with the correct antibiotics I'm not sure I'd do a major surgery here or want my wife to give birth here, but by and large the health care system here is quite good, considering 1.4 billion people, the number of doctors, the cost, the speed of it all, etc.

How often do you get ear infections? I’ve had one, when I was fiveish.

# ? May 11, 2018 12:52 |

Yeah if I had to do some sort of serious procedure I'd definitely hop a plane to Thailand or Korea but for just sort of everyday healthcare things it's fine. The hospitals are filthy and disgusting, in addition to the trying to find actual medicine instead of sorcery problem.

True. I’ve been to specialists a few times in Japan. Ear-nose-throat, dermatologist, and a visit costs less than ten bucks. Getting tests for a stopped up ear and then getting fluid drained cost like 30 bucks. A visit alone in the US would be many times more
