I agree that ad was in poor taste, but it seems like the reaction to it was a little overdone, to say the least. God forbid we could have a society where we can point out those sorts of problematic things and deal with them, without having a full-on freakout about them and having a hysterical overreaction, right?

Some folks in the restaurant industry thread were discussing it a few days ago as someone there is friends with the manager that posted the ad, and there's some theorizing that the grad student union is using this as a pretense to claim the space for something else - but that's pretty unsubstantiated at this point

I feel like immediately concluding that the word slave carries unacceptable racist connotations is itself implicitly and passively racist.

If I accept that we're carbon-negative, I can still think it'd be a good idea to incentivize being even more carbon-negative.

You are aware that the proposed carbon tax is confined to Alberta, and does not apply to the entire loving world, right?

Forests are not these amazing carbon sinks that make it all okay. All plants eventually die and decompose releasing carbon. As the climate warms, forest fires will be more common and severe, further accelerating the process. Meanwhile, humans are busily clearcutting those forests to make way for carbon releasing projects like farming, suburban sprawl, and tar sands. So it's not as if our amazing carbon-sequestering forests are growing at a rate that makes up for our ever-increasing manmade greenhouse emissions. This is one of the most patently insulting myths promoted by the fossil fuel industry.

I think you're missing the link to Marc Emery getting arrested and all his new pot shops in Montreal getting shut down: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/montreal-cannabis-culture-shops-police-raids-1.3900254 Emery's a shitbag and his wife isn't much better, but he's right - it's utter hypocrisy to be doing these raids with legalization on the table.

It's illegal until it's not, and while I'd say it's a bullshit move to arrest someone for possession at this point, I don't think the same applies to someone trying to commercialise marijuana prior to an actual legal framework being fashioned.

I love how this garbage is the best they can think to send people with all the poo poo going on in this country and around the world I'm always astounded at how out of touch every single political leader that isn't a raving idiot like the Fords seems to be, but at least the other parties know how to lie effectively for the most part. The NDP just misses the point of everything so thoroughly and consistently the only support they have left must be people who know there's no place left to park their votes All they have to do is run a guy or girl federally who says things like "gently caress rich people, they ruin everything" consistently and and as bombastically as the conservatives lie about everything else and I'd bet they'd suddenly enjoy a surge in popularity. They can't do that of course because someone somewhere might cough disapprovingly
