It was kind of the joke that I was ranting and rambling, but I can explain. My point is that insurance is based on pooled risk. Risk can be interpreted as health care costs that are spread throughout the pool. If you are not at risk of something, you are not contributing risk to the pool and therefore are not adding any costs to the pool. So my insurance covers viagra and other boner pills but I do not have a penis and therefore am not at risk of erectile dysfunction for having costs related to them. From my insurance's perspective, covering them for me is effectively free. And it's the same for this guy.

Am I wrong in this? I'm a policy-oriented health researcher but I admit that it's been a few years since I've done any work on insurance policy.

To a certain extent your right but you're also wrong. The whole point of risk pooling is that $X of claims is being paid out by the pool so everybody chips in to cover the costs of those claims. The idea generally is that 100% of the pool isn't going to claim for a specific thing and therefore you're spreading the cost/risk. If 100% of the pool is claiming then insurance is basically a useless middleman and you're better off paying out of pocket. So while it may be unfair that you don't claim for mammograms but you're contributing towards that cost, females are contributing towards the cost of your boner pills without ever claiming to spread the pain around. Also if you have family coverage chances are even if your coverage does not apply to you it may likely apply to your spouse or dependent. The general trend in health insurance is to offer all encompassing/one size fits all products, customization usually just means we're flushing cash down the drain.
