My state (Ohio) passed a law that just went into effect making golf cars street legal on roads with speed limits of 35 MPH or less. They have to be titled/plated and pass a vehicle inspection, but anyone wanting to drive a golf cart on a public road should be forced to watch this video.

They also let cyclists bicycle on roads. I wouldn't think being on the road in a golf cart is any more or less dangerous unless you're not in the mindset that you're more vulnerable than a full size car.

So yeah, a golf cart will get hosed up if you hit it at 50mph, but you know what else does? cyclists, pedestrians.

So for 2017 the GM diesel trucks have a new larger DEF tank that holds 7 gal, 2016s held only 5 gal. I never noticed that all the publicity photos either showed only the gas version or only from the driver's side or else had running boards positioned at a certain angle because here is the DEF tank on a truck without the running boards guys

Guess there's nowhere else on that tiny truck/engine bay to put it.

I had a Nissan Qashqai this week for a hire car. Picked it up with just 34 miles on the clock. Dropped it off 1000 miles later well and truly run in.

It was actually an OK car, and went OK for a little 1.5 diesel if you keep in 3rd and 4th. It handled too poorly to justify such stiff suspension, but I guess that's the trend nowadays.

The terrible bit? This this thing cost £27,000. For a jacked up smallish hatchback. You can get a well specced Passat or similar for that much, with a proper sized engine, a proper sized boot and the same amount of spec, and it'll ride and handle much better.

Oh great, it looks like a 4x4, well it costs as much as one, handles like one too, despite riding like a stiff hot hatch and being crap off road. Maybe you can get great deals on them, and maybe the lower spec models are better, I like that they are made in the UK, but this one was a POS considering the price.

Edit, the steering managed to be numb but heavy, and required a poo poo load of turns manoeuvring around tight turns, but because it was kinda stiff you couldn't just palm it round.

I Want To Believe.
As a baseline, crossovers are stupid and rubbish. If you want a hatchback or estate car that's not much good off road, they already sell those, they're called hatchbacks and estate cars.

If you're going to pay the various penalties of having the relevant accoutrements added to a vehicle, they need to pay their way and actually work.

stump
Jan 19, 2006

I don't even mind crossovers that much, since a 2wd car with good ground clearance is actually useful to me. But for them to be worthwhile they still have to be priced in the same bracket as their car equivalent.

I loved the much derided Fiesta based Ford Fusion. It was cost about the same as fiesta, had more space and was pretty capable off road for a car. It also didn't ride or handle badly. Unfortunately it looked like a gimpy old person car, instead of a 4x4 so only old giffers bought it.

It was their cheapest option

The filler for it is still under the hood.

ford managed to make the filler accessible and put a bigger tank up in the frame next to a 48 gallon fuel tank, so maybe GM is just lazy.

It's also worth noting everybody else in the industry e-coats their frames. GM still, after decades of it flaking off, frames rusting, and bending, waxes their frames, and does so very poorly.

A lot of owners complain about the wax flaking off all over their driveways, and the frames starting to rust on new trucks.

If you're ever close to one, just reach into the wheel well and you can just scratch it off with your finger nail.

5 gallon mostly works since DEF comes in 2.5 gallon containers. You have to run it down until the dash warnings are dire (on a Ford) for it to take it all.
7 gallons you are going to have a half gallon left in the container to store or forget about, or toss out...

DEF at the pump needs to be way more common. I have found a cardlock station that accepts regular credit/debit cards that has one and it was surprisingly satisfying not having to deal with the DEF boxes. But that station is an hour and half away from me...

Can't you buy it in a 40l or 212l drum and just use a drum pump to keep the tank topped off? You're going to use all of it anyway, adblue is cheaper in bulk, doesn't have a use-by you'd worry about, and takes up not a lot of floor space.

On the down side to get the drum home you'd have to use your truck for truck stuff, and I'm not sure that's the target market.

I was just under Slung's Silverado Classic and there is a remarkable lack of care also taken with proper drainage of crossmembers, not building steps into the frame to trap dirt, etc. The cab corners and door bottoms are bad enough, but you would think after several decades of making trucks they would know how to throw together a long-lasting frame.

The frame paint itself appears to be sub-Rustoleum spraybomb grade, too.

Apparently it does have a use by according to a couple of our friendly dealer techs. At a certain point it turns and you have to pump the tank. Generally only seems to be an issue with idiots buying an F-350 diesel to haul kids around. :v:

Work truck... I have brought up the bulk container idea several times. No dice. It is cheaper at the pump. $3 a gallon vs $4.80($12 a box) a gallon for the box.
