I wrote a business letter today using my favorite fountain pen. Then I sat down with a nice cup of tea and thanked the Lord that I have a job and don't have to act like spending $15 on a pen is a big deal.

For this very reason there are a fair amount of pen brands I actively avoid; I'll probably never own a Montblanc just because I'd then be the sort of person who owns a montblanc. IMO they're the rolex of fountain pens; quite nice with decent quality; but also overpriced and owned by the sort of people who want you to know how much money they can spend. Visconti and some other italian brands are in this category; they price their stuff astronomically and it's more about luxury than quality. The Japanese brands, like pilot/namiki and sailor seem to have good pens at reasonable (for a FP) prices; and I'll probably stay with them (I ordered a namiki falcon from amazon for about $110 recently, heh).

I've used a Lamy Safari fine point with refillable reservoir & Noodler bulletproof black for several months and quite enjoy writing with it, but it's a bit bulky for on-the-go use. Most of the "slim/thin" pens I've seen are either glossy plastic or metal, and I can't stand not having any traction since my skin is on the oily/sweaty side. Do any of you gentlemen know offhand if there are any affordable (sub-$50) not-thick pens with the kind of rubberized finish that a lot of smartphones/ereaders have on the back panel? Southpaw, if that makes any difference.

Goulet Pens, Writer's Bloc, Vickerey (only that size though) and iPenstore. This is, of course, presuming that you're in North America. I believe there are also some sellers for them up on Amazon, but they seemed to be twice the price of the folks listed by Exaclair.

*a homeless man sleeps in an alleyway beneath a roaring el train. the smell of garbage is overpowering. the rats gnaw on his legs. when he awakens, he finds an envelope next to him on the ground. the letter inside is written in an unintelligible script, like a third grader learning cursive* letter: "hello, my name is Franklin. I am writing to you with my 2010 Victory Montecue Pen, which was especially made for King Charles III. I would have you know, I own 35 pens, all of them unique. I am writing to you as a part of my court ordered community service. when would you like to come clean my pens? I use hydroxide because alcohol or vinegar might damage the casings. I can pay you .50$ per hour. I'l have you know, this is coming directly out of my Pen Fund. So be grateful."

Caught a co-worker using a Montblanc pen and I audibly snorted. Luckily I don't think he figured out why. I like bic pens personally. If you press the tip of them onto some paper, you can write things. And there's like 10 in a bag so if you have a problem with one you can just grab a new pen real easy.
