I was surprised too. It's attached to a casino and they gave me an upgrade. I thought that was a shoe in for a quality room.

It was a couple years ago, but the job this thread encouraged me to get gave me the training to get this job, which is awesome. So the precise timing of the :yotj: is why I'm in this great position.

It being common place doesn't make it correct. Did those candidates receive full benefits during their contract period? If not, compensation for the reduced pay?

It also doesn't necessarily make it wrong. In my experience, and certainly YMMV, I've always paid candidates MORE during the contract period to offset the fact that their benefits were limited and there was no official PTO.

In the contracting/consulting world, it's pretty normal to get paid higher than similarly skilled FTEs with benefits. That doesn't mean it happens all the time. Like people, sometimes companies are douchebags and one needs to watch out for douchebags.

I wanted to run a thing by you guys before I reached out to the contractor that set this up.

About 6 months ago we got a new Cisco UCM and all new phones. Part of the installation was an analog card for our fax machines to plug in to. For the most part everything has worked, and I've been able to make changes and solve minor problems on my own.
However this one has got me stumped.

There appear to be a handful of phone numbers that don't work when dialed from a fax machine, but do work when dialed from a hardphone or softphone.
I believe it's an issue with a route/partition/search space, but can't for the life of me figure out how the fax machines are routed for outgoing calls.

Any suggestions?

Did you ever figure this out?

It sounds like you have a VOIP router with an analog card installed. My guess is that you don't have dial peers configured on the router for all route patterns. Since the fax works to some and not others, it is clearly getting blocked somewhere. Are the numbers you can't reach long distance or toll calls? Do you have outgoing call admission control configured in CUCM or on the router? Can you send faxes to/from internal phone numbers?

I honestly have no idea how people live in Vancouver. I briefly thought about fleeing the country about 9 months back (no reason) and was looking at home prices there.

I lived in Vancouver back in the 1980s and it stayed on my list of places to live until the housing prices went crazy. It's also the only place I ever went to a comic book convention. :kiddo:

We rent, or live in the suburbs. There are a lot of places along the skytrain lines that are still affordable and reasonable to rent in. Just don't even think about buying.

I was slightly concerned about the Contract to Hire, because I've never done it before. The enormous pay bump would have been enough to make me feel OK about it since I could have saved enough to cover a bit if it didn't work out, but $300 a week for a comparable health plan to what I pay $35 for now, and is the low tier at the company I'm at now, was loving insane to me.

Tell them that. One of the companies I interviewed for had $900/month for a PPO1000 plan compared to the $208 I paid at my last place for PPO500, and now $0 at this new place. I realize comparing just the deductible is a hilariously poor way to do it, but it's all I care to type. I computed it all into a total compensation worksheet. In my rejection email I told them truthfully that a key factor in not accepting their offer was I was uncomfortable with their healthcare premiums and that they've gone up several times in the last few years due to the ACA, even with the added salary they threw in to cover the costs.

What a poo poo show this project is that I came to Vancouver to work on. No one mentioned it was a construction zone so they wouldn't even let me in because I didn't have a hard hat and vest. I got some from home depot, then the video conferencing units I needed to configure and test were delayed because the tv's they ordered were dead on arrival 2 months ago and no one knew. I had to go to staples and expense a monitor to fulfill the statement of work. Of course the ip addressing they gave me doesnt work because their network team is having trouble configuring a voice vlan (huh). Then the access points I needed to configure had never been installed and the cross connects between IDFs were not working and no one had a toner. Finally the program manager didn't provide a rack diagram and said plug my switch in anywhere which I did, then hours later she put me on blast on email for installing it in the wrong spot, and I also didnt install 2 patch management's I didn't know existed and we aren't contracted to install

Lol. Too many cooks on this one. Can't wait to be in st lucia next week and forget about this project.
