Standard tuning doesn’t have anything to do with it, FYI. The 12th fret is halfway up the string, so it’s always one octave up. (And the 24th is 3/4 of the way, 36th would be at 7/8ths, etc etc)

Going halfway along the string to go an octave up works on anything with strings, be it a guitar, bass, violin, cello, uke, or a rubber band between two posts.

Because physics, that’s why! :science:

I didn’t get into Radiohead until the last 2-3 years hilariously enough. I liked a song here and there but when I finally got into them completely I totally understood why they have so many insane fans. They’ve heavily influenced my music and music gear. They are a band I always get something out of when I listen to them. Consistent go to for sparks of creativity and different ideas.

If you can adjust a truss rod and bridge, you can track down basic electrical bullshit and fix it. Most guitars are fairly to very simple in terms of components and connections. Teles are very very simple. You can learn to solder (like, the actual skill of making a soldered connection) in a couple of minutes. A cheap iron's like 8 bucks.

But don't buy a cheap iron, because it makes the job a lot harder. But seriously, soldering is easy. I was terrified of it, but I took the advice of this very thread and got a decent iron, a multimeter, and a few cheap on-off switches from the hardware store with different connector types to practice on, and in 10 minutes I was comfortable. Since, I've done full wiring on 5 guitars and can pretend I know what I'm doing.

When it comes to producing original songs, I come up with decent riffs (what I'll refer to as a "hook") all the time when noodling and just trying to "feel it," but I am my own worst enemy in making them into something. The idea I am working on will continually lose its luster for me as I work with it. Before I can turn it into a full arrangement, I've fallen out of love with it from some snobby corner of my mind that tells me it's derivative, or pretentious, and no one will like it, or whatever excuse my mind latches on to.
It's preventing me from actually creating much of anything and I know that if I had an ongoing relationship with a like-minded drummer who could help me out by saying, "No, Faust, this is good, let's work on it" and giving me a beat and other feedback, I could probably be almost prolific in output. Not saying it would be great music but I've had my moments and I fully believe having a musical partner (and since I already sing, play guitar and bass, and write lyrics I really need a drummer because I hate using canned MIDi or loops and I hate programming drums even more) would allow me to get past my own inner roadblocks and get to the finish line with all the riff ideas I have stored here and there.

I have to pay the bills and I have very little free time, so meeting a cool drummer and hanging out and writing stuff that's only going to ever be a side project is akin to winning a major lottery pot. I just don't see it happening (though it's not impossible.)

I'm not even hung up on musical style. Whatever I come up with, if I like it (at first), I'm willing to run with it. Even if it means being all over the map in terms of style (in my case, it clearly does.)

Anyway, I just wanted to vent about that. Thanks.

Hey have any of you heard of a Martin or other steel string with no truss rod? I’m worried that my student got a knock off or B stock. He usually brings electric but brought his acoustic since he left his other guitar at jazz band - I noticed a bow so I got my truss wrench and put it in. I didn’t feel anything and though “man this thing must be really recessed in the hole”. Well I looked there and there is NOTHING in the hole. Also there is no label on the inside of the body, the only marking inside the guitar is this (I apologize for the poo poo quality, he needed to go right after the lesson so I had to be very quick about getting a photo):

I could see pretty far in there and it is just wood. Unless it is way, way in there and you need a specialized tool then there is not a truss rod in there.

Is anyone familiar with these “Special” guitars? Is this typical?

Yeah I feel the same way. If I could just find a music partner that gave me a slight bit of confidence in my stuff rather than me being my own worst critic we could do great things. I’ve always been able to write licks and leads and what not for other people’s songs and give them a unique stamp. But if I have to start from scratch I will paralyze myself after getting a riff together. You don’t by chance live in the Chicago region do ya lol? I got a 2 year old and I just don’t have the time to troll every open mic I see looking for a like minded person. Craigslist is a disaster every single time.

Edit: I even had a goon from the area hit me up cause of this thread and ghost me like 2 weeks later lol. The best thing I ever did was just start learning a ton of songs and set myself up with a few acoustic sets until I have enough to do a show on my own. But it’s just not the same as having a full band, always feels like I’m missing something. At least I’m moving in the direction of being self sufficient rather than waiting around for the perfect group of people to materialize.

That a double edged sword though, like, you may be picturing the perfect creative partner who supports you the whole way. But musical partners are equally likely to say:

i dont like that (about the part youve spent weeks on), lets do this instead (plays obnoxious solo), jokey sarcastic comment about the thing you meant as super sincere that wasnt probably meant as a dig but cuts you deep secretly, whoops I forgot to practice, what do you want to do/i dont know what do YOU want to do/i dont know what do you etc, awkward compromise that leaves neither of you quite happy, some other stupid muso bullshit.

Playing with a great partner CAN be amazing, but like anything else in life you cant wait around for it. Embrace working solo, there are benefits to it: you can do what you want when you want, you can work on something as long as you want, you can throw work out on a dime without it causing a friendship ending fight, you can indulge weird notions.

Yeah that’s a great point. I recently split with my longtime drummer friend cause of poo poo like that. Dude just couldn’t be bothered to come practice for like 3 weeks. In those 3 weeks I spent time working on a cover song. I learned it one way but it was too high to sing so I dropped it a step or two and relearned it. Took some effort to learn it on my end and memorize all the lyrics. Then he finally comes over and halfway through trying it the first time he’s like “it’s too fast or something, I don’t think I wanna play this song”. It was a lot of little poo poo like that that started stacking up.

Like bro, you should have showed up 2 weeks ago and said this before I spent weeks learning it.....at this point you need to at least attempt it a few times before you just tell me I wasted all this time learning it.

I think the biggest part of having a partner is just confidence to go up and play in front of a crowd. That way you know at least one other person thinks your good enough to get up there with you while you sing some songs. I think I’m a good singer but it took a while before I would even think to say that. Honestly if it wasn’t for this rear end in a top hat I may have never started singing in the first place cause I thought I was pretty bad.

Is that thing brand new? Like, from this year? Apparently the latest serial number Martin made in 2017 was 2161732, but 218xxxx should be right within the first half of this year. If it's authentic, he might be able to contact them to have it fixed. I would double check with a very long allen wrench though, apparently Martin puts them in there pretty deep.

All I will say is that my last Martin required me to buy a special Allen wrench, because that sucker was REAAALLLLY up in them guts...

The label is a bit of a worry, but usually fakes go for either something a bit more flashy and obvious, or nothing at all. Haven't got mine any more to compare but pretty sure the label was directly in the soundhole like usual.

This is my worst enemy. About 75% of the riffs I play go into a category of "oh man that's cool" but then when I try to piece that with something else coherently it'll just never sound right. I make roughly a song every six months to a year because I don't want songs to just be a amalgamation of random riffs I pieced together, and other feelings. So far I've been trying to get better at "through composition" and proggy song structures to cure the riff salad feeling (but that gets into the territory of "no one wants to hear an 8 minute long song these days") or through composition punk/grind short song structures.

On this thing I recorded the other day just for a tone demo, I made it out of my writing templates and some random riffs pieced together. The first one was something I've used before in a joke song I wrote to sarcastically answer an email. The second riff is a locrian thing that kinda came from a punk chord progression like this song. The third riff that someone in this thread complimented me on, I swear I got the idea from a combination of the interlude in Powerslave and part of the chorus to this vektor song where I'm just doing a Bminor chord, then a G major chord but with an open E and B strings ringing out, then a full F#Maj chord (major on purpose for that harmonic minor feel). Then back to the punk riff. The whole thing took me about five minutes to put together. Am I happy with it? gently caress no. If I change the drums to not just be templates, put lyrics on it, and polish up the master then it could stand for a decent little melodic punk song as is. But I wouldn't be happy with it, and I never will. Instead, I'm taking my reservations with that piece and using it on others. For example, I've been working on something in Dminor for a while now but can't quite commit to what I exactly want to do with the song. Will it be an epic 10min long piece, or can I cut out a bunch of ideas and form a 1:30 banger out of it? I don't know. But I will figure it out one day. So far the only thing i've learned is to just stop caring and play what you like.

This is my Ormsby Hype Guitar (I bought it used for like 800 bucks) and:
  • Most people around town have told me that it looks funny/weird/ugly (even if some goons have been very gracious and said it looks cool-ish).
  • It has the jack where you'd normally put the bottom strap button
  • It's impossible to convince people that you want to play flamenco, merengue, salsa or any other music that's not djent with it.
  • And if you try to look at yourself in video/the mirror, it kinda screws with your perception because of the multi-scale/fanned frets.
Despite everything I just mentioned, it is an absolute joy to play the thing. It lends itself extremely well to finger/chicken picking, slap-and-popping and every other playing style you want to use. Once you get used to positioning your fretting hand, the fanned frets are doing all of the heavy lifting for you. Oh, and like 80% of the time? I'm using it in single-coil mode. I say bring the weird/freaky on. Freaky is cool. :3:

It is cool and interesting and also manages to not look like a boat!
