Since it's the season for both holiday gift giving and year end charity giving, here's a post about that stuff. I bring it up every year but there's a few good charities that help with the welfare of the endangered red panda population. If you want gifts, the World Wildlife Foundation has a Red Panda adoption kit with various price ranges. $55 gets you a stuffed red panda toy that's pretty nice, and they're donated so it's not like there's less donation left after (aside from the shipping I guess). There's some new price tiers this year with different stuffed pandas including a giant red panda for $250. https://gifts.worldwildlife.org/gift-center/gifts/species-adoptions/red-panda.aspx The only caveat to the WWF donation is that they don't direct the money directly to red pandas, it's just a WWF donation with a red panda reward. That said, as far as I know, it's a good organization. They claim 85% of donations go to conservation efforts. Unfortunately I'm posting too late, I just saw that Thursday was the cutoff for delivery by Christmas to get items from the WWF. I figure it's still worth mentioning, though. The other organization that works directly for conservation of red pandas is the Red Panda Network. They work on a lot of direct initiatives to help with red panda conservation. The Red Panda network has option to donate and a symbolic adoption donation that gives you information about a specific red panda they keep track of in Nepal (via email to keep costs down). would you goons like to do a Red Panda Project?? the project is: there is a friend of mine. this friend has a friend. this friend of a friend has a little girl. the little girl looooves pandas. and, importantly, a deal has been made that messages that arrive for her in a certain way are from "the red panda" (meaning these messages are coming directly from one of the pandas at our local zoo (it is a smart panda ok)). the potential goon project here is......i have been given pre clearance to be a mysterious source of these messages  the little girl and the parent don't know me, and my friend who knows them isn't going to spill the beans, so if/when i start sending panda communiques, they will have no idea who it is from. my idea was, and my friend thinks this is a great idea, is for me to be a relay between "some people on the internet who love pandas" and this little girl who loves pandas. our collective creativity and nerdy knowledge of panda videos/knowledge/etc will be kind of a Panda Santa for a budding panda lover. all i "need" is fun ideas that fit the theme. anybody interested? also it would be good if someone can point me to a sub forum that isn't publically viewable where a thread like this would fit b/c i don't want to spoil things
