I dunno, normally yes, but nothing about Star Citizen is normal. Also unless they fix the worst of the crashing with a super patch in the next couple of days, it's going to be broken while CIG take two weeks off.

The way 2.0 is shaping up it's looking less and less like the engine would be an issue though. I think they'll run into pure content issues / the impossible feature list that they've set themselves much sooner.

Oh yeah and crappy experimental tech like grabby hands and the Realistic Head-bob (tm).

uhm no. The engine still needs to be built. All the bugs, crappy performance etc, aren't from content issues. They're from engine issues.

Missing ship parts? engine

Missing/Incorrect textures? engine

Collision issues? engine

Physics issues? engine

Flight dynamics issues? engine

Connection issues? engine

There is no problem putting content in an engine, even a buggy engine. To wit: the engine is still buggy as hell, but that didn't stop them from putting in new ships (buggy content) in the latest 2.1 engine update

I think they mentioned how 2.1 was increasing the player count per instance but they forgot that the grouping option allows a player to see how many people are in an instance and it says xx/16 when you try to join another players instances.

That was for the social module. So 64 people can run around and set golf carts on fire, but only 16 of them can be in orbit at any time.

It will go away, sure, but if they don't up the player capacity to something meaningful it won't really matter. Especially for capital ship gameplay. And every time they up the player capacity it seems to bring about a new wave of crashes.

I'm not a programmer, but this doesn't seem like a trivial problem that will be solved soon.

Something that really impresses me with Descent Underground is how they have an aggressive patch schedule that includes both content and "Quality of Life" patches. So one week you might get a level, ship, gun, etc, but another week you'll see things like them tweaking mouse curves or other changes that make the game more fun to play. In spite of literally years of backers bitching about things like that CIG doesn't seem to have the time to do it.

Well CIG have wisely used the Fun Model from Second Life, so they can safely ignore all that and concentrate on creating a safe place for assholes to hang out, not do anything and jack off over each others uniforms and / or spaceships for months on end.
I think removing the game parts of the game this way is revolutionary and along with the PVP Spectrum to disable all human contact at will they have a real loving good game and surefire hit on their hands.

AION IS an MMO that is to this day rather successful in its home country, uses Cryengine just fine and at the time had one of the largest continuous PVP zones in any MMO. The game ran great all things considered given that you could have 300+ people fighting in a particular part of the zone during sieges.

I dont think its an issue with the engine, its just the engineering needed to get things to work.

Is sometimes falling into SPF (seconds per frame) territory when you have the graphics on minimum and all char models except you and your target turned off considered running great? I liked Aion a lot but saying it ran great during fortress sieges is pushing it a bit.

Probably this. Chris and Sandi will fly off somewhere and leave everyone else to fix everything. When they come back they'll blow a gasket because the game is still what it is. Happy Holidays to all.

Yeah, and even better, people were deploying their own implementations of this as well as using the engines.

In around 2004, Eve was tracking every 'item' in local rather than 'on grid', which led to reducing the upper limit on launched drones, and making missiles abstract rather than an actual travelling object because of the sheer bandwidth needed for position updates. A few years later they had to take another crack at speed calibrations, because it was possible to fit an interceptor to hit 16km/s and that started to degrade precision in the engine and specifically grid updates.

Scale is nothing to sneeze at, but it's something that constantly crops up as a 'surprise', particularly with people that don't model the worst case scenarios.

^^^
Edit: Yeah, they're tracking people and the ships separately for positional updates, which is why people and their ships can glitch apart; missed update packets and nothing to associate the ship to the pilot. Multicrew will scale that, but imagine if they're also tracking objects in the ships.

Eve gets mentioned in here a lot, generally not because it's great, but because they've run into a lot of these issues and both fixed and avoided them. I think the best example of the above was when 'shuttle spam' was a thing.

That and the fact that their 64-Bit world hack is still (as I said it would) wreaking all kinds of havoc already.

I hope that my question isn't too personal and my apologies if so. I was wondering if before you were exiled by CIG, would you have counted Lesnick among your friends? Lately I notice you trouncing on him quickly (and deservedly) so I'm assuming there is no love lost between y'all now.

It just has me wondering how possibly Lesnick is losing friends and relationships, and if he even cares because there are a hundred sycophants to fill the void. Like LOL at this game because from the outside looking in, this game has done absolutely done nothing but ruin lives.

Just some thoughts I had last night when the power was out...~
