Is anyone else's Facebook feeds filled with people doing that Big Sleep Out thing? It promises to "end homelessness" but makes no mention of racism or poverty or social housing or access to mental health services. What's the point? Is it just to assuage the consciences of middle-class liberals?

It's the time-honoured tradition of looking like you're doing something when, in fact, you're doing nothing. Governments do it too!

It's literally povertyplay. That said, the charity Lifewise that it's supposed to be fundraising for does claim to have a focus on helping people resolve those issues that made them homeless rather than simply providing meals and housing for them.

Didn't they do this stupidity a few years ago in the Aotea square? Because nothing says homeless like spending the entire night in one of the most brightly lit and travelled areas of the CBD and not getting hassled by the police.

It's raising awareness, raising money for a charity that tries to deal with the problem, and makes people look like they care (sometimes they don't). Short of National somehow growing a conscious or morals or something, this is all most of them can do.

A lot of people genuinely don't think homelessness is actually a huge issue emblematic of this government's disinterest in social welfare, despite the central Auckland homeless population like doubling in the last ten years while the state departments intended to alleviate that problem have been starved of funds for the purpose of making it appear like the private charities that inevitably have to rise to meet the shortfall are legitimate solutions rather than ideologically driven religious organisations meeting an ideologically driven intentional failure, and bringing with them the baggage of social issues that come from being religious organisations. It doesn't promote awareness of homelessness as an issue. It promotes awareness that private charity is capable of providing a solution to a problem that has only grown without a state solution.

'Awareness' has never been a problem for this type of stuff. 'Giving a poo poo' is what they should try promoting.

Literally eat the rich then livenin their houses. Problem solved. Lots of people ITT doing nothing to alleviate homelessness, criticising people doing something to raise money and awareness for homelessness as doing nothing to alleviate homelessness. Its not a perfect event, but what do you expect political action to look like on this kind of issue?
